South Carolina may soon execute repeat child molesters

As much as I dislike pedophiles, the death penalty is not the answer. America needs to end its use of the death penalty.

If you had a child molested you might change your mind!

I actually have it in my will that if I should ever die as a result of a murder, my family is to strictly oppose the death penalty for the perpetrator. I practice what I preach.

Prison is a horrible, horrible place and especially awful for pedophiles. That is punishment enough. Our use of the death penalty has resulted in the execution of innocent people and a stain on our society.

Interesting. I would feel the same re. someone who hurt me. But very differently if someone hurt my child. I do respect someone who "practices what they preach", though!

But, as it stands now, a child molestor can get out of prison and do it again. And again. It happens all the time.

No, innocent people should not get executed. They should not be imprisoned either, especially if, as so many against the death penalty argue, prison is actually worse than the death penalty. That is a problem with the justice system itself, and one that needs to be addressed.

Some have expressed concerns about the cost of keeping someone on death row...valid points, indeed, but this country blows so much money on, well, too much nonsense to list. So, a ton of money spent keeping some child rapist in jail for the rest of his life is MONEY WELL SPENT for a change.

By keeping him in jail, it keeps him away from my nieces & nephews, and all of your kids/grandkids/ etc.

Actually I was molested by a neighbor when I was in 3rd-4th grade. I don't wish death on the man who molested me. I would prefer to reserve the death penalty for those who kill/murder someone.

You have made valid points.

The death penalty is not something you can take back or compensate for if you get it wrong. I agree with the death penalty in theory, but not in practice.

Until the justice system can find a way to make the death penalty just, it should not be used.

And I agree that spending a lifetime in jail labeled a pedophile would probably be enough punishment in my book.

Here's another point of view why automatic death penalties for child molesters may not be such a hot idea.

A father molests his daughter. The only way to convict him is with direct testamony by the daughter. You want to put a child on the stand and testify again their own father in a death penalty case?

I think having it be an option for the judge or prosecutor to be able to apply the death penalty isn't a bad idea (although I'm still not crazy about having to pay more to put him to death than to just let him rot), but it shouldn't be automatic, let our DA's and judges use their judgement and apply it when appropriate.

Insane judge

Oh my God. He should be thrown off the bench immediately. How horribly sad and unjust for the little girl and her family :sad2:

One can only hope that Karma does exist, and that Judge Cashman has a little dose of Karma waiting for him someday.

In theory it sounds great, but like another poster said, it's much more expensive to execute them then to just toss them in prison and throw away the key (ie life with no parole). That's a law I could get behind!

Also, I didn't read the article, but I'd like the law to be clear that we are talking about adults molesting children, not an 18 year old kid sleeping with his 16 year old girlfriend and the parents get mad and press charges. Huge, huge differance between the two, but some states don't make the distinction, you're labled a "child preditor" either way.

If only they would lock them away for life. Something seriously needs to be done! There are way too many of us who have had our lives tainted and our outlooks skewed by these sick people. It is time someone does something to protect the next generation.

Yes I also agree that the law does need to be clear. It is a shame that an 18 year old can rot in jail for having sex with his girlfriend while a molester gets to run free. GGRRRRR...

But if they do decide to start frying them I'll sign up to push the button a time or two.

I object on two grounds.

First, I believe a life incarceration is more serious a punishment than death, as it is an ongoing punishment that ends up exactly the same (death and Judgement).

Second, I am morally and logically against execution. It's been proven as more expensive, more hazardous, no better at deterring criminals and so on. I wouldn't want my money being wasted on a process that had no tangible upside aside from satiating bloodlust. They're just not worth it.

You still didn't address the issue of something happening to your child. To me it is much, much worse if something happens to my child than to me.

Execution isn't a great thing but there are some cases where it simply needs to happen. These sick *******s don't need to sit in a cell somewhere conjuring up ideas of ways to get out and get more children. They don't need to have the chance to come up and try to prove they are reformed and have a chance of seeing daylight again.

:thumbsup2 Completely agree. And spare me the argument about "oh, if it happens to you, you'll change your mind"...no, I wont.

That would be a flaw in your punitive system, not the concept of life incarceration.

YEs it is a different crime and should be treated as such, but the 18 year old needs to know that 16 year old are off limits. Every time one of my nephews turned 18 I told them point blank that all girls that are not 18 are OFF LIMITS and there are no exception. I then explained it to them. So far no problem there.

What makes you think you can honestly say that? You have no idea what these type of people can put you though. You have no idea the kind of scars they can leave on your life.

I am not one who is all for the death penalty. But on this issue I can have a change of heart. I have been there and I have been hurt by these sick *******s. I have physical and mental scars because of them. And they are the reason I can't have a child of my own. So yeah, I am pretty much on fire about these people and want to see them fry so another child doesn't have to live through all the crap I did.

I am against the death penalty. I cannot pick and choose which criminals I think should be put to death and which ones just life in prison.

You are either anti-death penalty or you aren't.

And I know I won't change my mind and I have no desire or need to explain to anyone why. :)

Go SC! Personally, I believe first offenders should be neutered. If it occurs again (kinda unlikely) let 'em swing.

That is a good point. However, you will be saving the grandchildren from being molested in the future. Therefore breaking the cycle.

But I digress...our justice system is screwed up. And for those of you that think prisoners are hard on molesters...Those days are gone baby...that is "old school".
Actually I have heard that they are the "favorites" now. They are more likely to be personable and get away with stuff. They make friends with the guards. They are not veiwed as threat, really.

I would go for the death penalty if they make it so you are convicted and then taken out back and shot right away.
