This is something that I have been wondering.

What is the diffrence between soup and chowder. What make one soup and the other chowder.

Also, diffrerence between a torte and a cake. What make one a torte and the other a cake.

Since we have so many wonderfeul cooks on this board, thought I would ask the question to see if I could find out.

I believe that a torte does not use flour, it uses bread or cake crumbs and finely ground nuts. I'm not too sure about the chowder, but I think it needs to be thick and uses milk.

I was just thinking about what I posted and forget about the chowder using milk, I just thought of Manhatten Clam chowder and that doesn't use milk.

New England Clam Chowder is with milk .....YUMMY.....I love a good seafood chowder.....soups are usually not as thick and has a more liquid base to it....

I thought a torte was smaller and skinnier then a cake......hmmmmmm

Well, you guys got my curiousity going, so...

According to dictionary.com, a torte is: A rich cake made with many eggs and little flour and usually containing chopped nuts.

So, I guess a torte is a cake, but not all cakes are tortes. ;)

Similar for chowder: 1: A thick soup containing fish or shellfish, especially clams, and vegetables, such as potatoes and onions, in a milk or tomato base.
2: A soup similar to this seafood dish: corn chowder.

Thanks. This has been driving me crazy for a couple of months trying to find out.
