SOTMK Trading?

Neat. Geekily, we're mostly interested in collecting the cards, but we're dorks that way. No worries, then, whether the game resets or not. Thanks!

I am a card collector as well, so I definitely understand :)

Tortuga Tavern (after the food is done being served) has become the unofficial guest trading spot. Often you will find a group of two with a ton of cards ready to trade. Definitely a good place to look if you are interested in seeing all the different cards

Do you have to have the key card and/or magic band that it was activated on with you to just pick up another pack of cards? I got a deck when we went to the halloween party in 2014, but didn't actually take time to play (other than they felt they had to demo how to do it before giving us our deck and special MNSSHP card). I'll be there in a couple of weeks for one day in the park and wanted to pick up another deck of cards if I can, but won't want to take time to actually play since I only have one day.

I didn't even think about maybe needing to bring the original card or band with me. Is that necessary if you don't plan to play?

You can only pick up cards with an active game. So you can either start a new game with your new card/band, or you can bring your old one.

To use the old one, you simply need to activate the next portal in your game (scan at any portal and it will tell you where to go), and then you can pick up the new pack of cards

The game itself actually takes 3-4 hours. Each villain takes about 30 minutes, and there are 10 villains to defeat.

When you finish a level, you can choose to upgrade to a harder one, but can also ask to remain on easy. I have been through the game about 8 times and stick with medium most of the time.

Thank you for the clarification.

Thanks for the reply! I probably won't mess with it this time then.

Oooh, thanks!

For us card collectors, then -- or anyone -- I'm getting more confused. I thought you could get a pack each day you were in the magic kingdom. Even if you don't play them that day? Also, is it one pack per person or per group?

Will they give 2 year olds cards. My son wants everything his sister has and I'm sure he'll bend them which my daughter couldn't handle. Just checking. Thanks.

I found this on another site -
Each person that has paid park admission can get a pack of cards each day that you enter the Magic Kingdom. So even if someone in your group isn’t playing, you can have them scan their entrance ticket or Magic Band to get a set of cards. During our last trip, we were able to combine all four family members onto the same game. So we only needed the one key card, but could get 4 packs of cards each day.

If you complete the entire game (by defeating Hades) you can get an extra set of cards that day, so don’t forget to go and get them.

It makes it sound like you can get a new pack each day you are at MK whether you play or not. I hope this is true. Maybe someone can confirm?

You can get a new pack each day, but you must first open the next portal. You can't just keep collecting free packs without playing at all.

Technically, I would say no, because the rules state that getting the cards requires paid admission. I don't know what happens in real life, which is often different than what the rules state. :rotfl: They do sell booster packs in the shops, or you can probably get a bunch of common cards for your son pretty cheaply on eBay. I doubt he'll care how rare they are.

One of the adults in your group can get cards and give them to your son. He could play using that adults band. You need a band, not necessarily his, to play.

I played this game 5 years ago the last time we went. Are my cards still good? Is the technology different?

You are supposed to activate the next portal in your game before they give you a new pack of cards. Even if all you do is scan the portal and leave, you will be allowed to pick up a new pack.

One pack per person per day

So if you are a family of 4, you will be able to pick up 4 packs of cards each day you are in MK. Every person has to be linked to the active game, but only the leader needs to activate the portal for everyone to be eligible for the new pack

Your experience may be different, but when we were there in December DS5 and I played the game on our first MK day. Later in the trip our whole group scanned bands and we got 6 packs of cards, including one for our 2y/o DS. From that, I'm thinking that all you really need is a magic band but YMMV.

We love playing SOTMK! The kids love hunting for the portals and you really get to see some fantastic corners of the park you may otherwise miss. This is also one of the big things my husband looks forward to. (Nerd! lol) We collect new card packs every day we can and have made a few trades with other guests. On our last trip this past January we bought the card binders and stat boosting shirts. My husband likes the challenge of playing on hard level and figuring out which card combos work best against each villain.

Can someone please tell me what the heck you people are even talking about?

DS does this game every trip and gets very into checking out his cards right before we go ...and DH says exactly the same thing you just said! I busted out laughing in my cube

and by play it means get packs. DS is the "key holder" and the only one that plays (only one of you need to open a portal). All three of us get packs everyday (after opening a portal).

The other things is after a couple days with all your packs you will likely get lots of duplicates so the dups are great ones to give to the 2 year old.

Also ticket media can also be used for people without bands.

Ohhh, bummer, then. We were looking forward to starting this, but since we're not at WDW more than once a year at this point, we'd never get to finish. However, we ARE planning on moving to Florida and getting APs in a few years. Would it be okay to start collecting cards now, and playing mostly later?

Our MagicBands never seem to work as key cards, so we have been using the original key card that came with our first set of cards. It works fine with the key card instead of the MB's.

We go to Disney once a year. We've had our progress saved on our SOTMK key cards for a year twice now. We'll see at the end of this month whether they are still there for a 3rd year in a row.
We've been playing with the same key card for a couple years now. So far, it has worked for us. :)

Yep! Every player gets a pack of cards.

When playing with multiple people, one person will be the key holder - they will be the ones with the ability to activate the portals. The other players will need to be linked to the main player to get a pack.

This game is linked to the RFID code in your magicbands/tickets and not to your MDX account. This can get a little confusing, but if you have multiple bands, you must use the same band every time to continue your game - if you bring in a second band that is linked to you on MDX, it will not work.

Multiple people can each have their own account too. My daughter and I race each other to see who finishes first. I'm actually surprised they give out cards to people who do not have their own "key". Or do you have the one key on all bands?

Do you have to have the key card and/or magic band that it was activated on with you to just pick up another pack of cards? I got a deck when we went to the halloween party in 2014, but didn't actually take time to play (other than they felt they had to demo how to do it before giving us our deck and special MNSSHP card). You have to have an admission ticket/band into the park to get a pack. So, each trip, even if you have a new band, you can get a pack of cards to start - you'll just be using that band/card. And if you are on MDE, and have your bands linked, you can pick up your old spot in the game.

Oooh, thanks!

You've got to play between now.
