Sometimes I hear myself speak

I've taken several public speaking courses that tape and critique you. Since, I have learned to not speak so fast, stop using 'like' every other word (CA roots) and catch my umm's.
I still sound like a child though on voice mails.

Ash, embrace it and go with it. The alternative is you have to sound like a bland news anchor. A southern accent is a beautiful thing -and so is our use of idioms and colorful language.

I know I have a southern accent - and I'm proud of it! DH always says he sounds like a hick....and I have to agree with him. He has much more of a southern drawl than I do. Anytime we go outside of our home state & someone hears either of us speak, they have to know where we're from.

Just call me Ellie Mae, and DH can be Jethro.

I have such a thick New Yawk accent! When we go to Disney, people know where we are from the minute we open our mouths!

When you speak you hear yourself thru both of your hearing channels. When it's played back you hear it differently than it sounds when you spoke it. To better hear how you will sound close one of your ears, like singers do to hear their own voices. You'd be surprised of the difference.

I've worked on my voice all of my life because it's my profession. I had a very LOW voice as a child and had to take lessons to bring it up to even sound like a woman. Then growing up in Brooklyn and that dialect... ... I worked HARD at obliterating that!

Now I live in the South and have been here for 20 years. Not having a Southern accent is a choice for me. My sister has been here 30 years and she sounds like Scarlett O'Hara! My other sister sounds like Archie Bunker...

It's the same for us Canucks, eh!!!!! I hate hearing my own voice too!! Sounds sooo foreign to me!! Pics are even worse!!!!!!!! I look like THAT???? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Never leaving the house again!!! Worse is when you say.."I totally am not photogenic!!! Never even looks like me!" and then some BOZO (DH?!) says "Sure it does honey!!!"

How funny, my mom and dad say it. My husband gave me guff for saying waRsh. Drives him crazy. My parents say exactly that way. My dad was born and raised in Alaska, my mom in Washington.
