Some clarifications on the 9/20/16 show

Walt's10thOldManZach (great name by the way), I think you're kinda living in the past. And don't worry, I'm right there with ya! I don't understand the Marvel love. I don't like superhero movies, and I definitely don't think it fits anywhere in the parks. I think the destruction of Tower of Terror in Disneyland is a tragedy. I am so happy we are prohibited from having Marvel attractions this side of the Mississippi (although Guardians is the weird exception to this rule).

I feel the same about Star Wars. I'm fine with Star Tours because it's been around forever and Lucas has a connection to the parks. But I don't like the fact that just because Disney bought the franchise means it has to now fit into Disney culture. Does anyone really consider Leia a Disney princess or Yoda a classic Disney character? No. They're classics in their own right, but we can't pretend that it's woven into the fabric of Disney's identity just because the corporation now gets paychecks for The Force Awakens.

When people talk about how Disney was first approached to buy Harry Potter, I shutter at the idea of it being in Disney parks. Not because it's a subpar product or anything, but because it's not Disney, it never has been Disney, and nothing about it fits into Disney. Same with Lord of the Rings. I LOVE that story, but don't want it anywhere near Disney.

IMO the only films that should be incorporated into Disney parks are Disney and Pixar films. Now here's my complete hypocrisy... I am totally excited to see Pandora in Animal Kingdom. (But that's more for the beautiful landscaping and mountains that we're gonna get from it, not because I care about the story in the slightest. And it's not because Disney simply bought out Cameron's company or anything, there's a rhyme and reason for it being in the park. But yeah, it's hyporcritical.)

They wouldn't have owned potter just the theme park rights. Universal doesn't own potter just the theme park rights.

That doesn't make any difference to me, it's still the idea of Harry Potter being in Disney parks.

Just clarifying so people don't think Disney was going to buy Harry Potter because they weren't.

Thank you for this true insight! Such a breath of fresh air. :smickey:

IMO, Frozen is the worst film Disney has produced in recent memory. I think the music is awful, the characters are wooden, the plot ridiculous and on and on. But I also get that my opinion is the minority and that Frozen is a big deal to lots of others. Therefore I have made peace with its presence in the parks and as a part of Disney in general.

I suggest those of you who dislike Marvel and Star Wars find a way to make a similar peace.

Exactly! Just numbers and money. No heart. Just action. So crazy and nothing of what Disney used to be. Capitalize on family and perfecting what Disney was good at, a small loss in the trueness that Disney is just for some good action and box office success.
With all due respect, have you never as a child wished for or dreamt of being a super hero fighting to save the world? Can kids not have that fantasy? It isn't always about money, it can be more about what the consumer wants to enjoy, and right now, Watching and fantasizing about super heros is very, very popular

Exactly! Reading the comic books, these characters have heart. They're engaging stories that are beloved by millions.

I have two teen boys who find the Marvel stories as magical as the stories in the Disney classics. Its all about telling a story.

Just because something tells a story doesn't mean it fits into Disney, IMO.

That is true but I think we need to accept that it is part of Disney now whether we like it or not.

Very true. No use crying about it now. Especially since we won't be seeing much Marvel in our park.

If we were talking about the Magic Kingdom I would agree, but a talking space raccoon fits in Epcot as much as Aerosmith fits in Hollywood Studios. At this point WDW needs rides, and as long as they are original and done right with the immersive theming that we know and love, I don't care what the theme is.

Yeah very good point. I point to my hypocrisy about my excitement for Pandora to support your point.

At the time I would argue Aerosmith did fit in DHS because it was a studio park. The pre-show showed a music studio which worked with the theme of the park. The new theme of the park going forward it doesn't work though.

Point taken. Problem is that has nothing to do with Disney and It's original goals. Seems like a money grab to just fit the brand somehow into matching what's popular now.

I can't imagine Disney capitalizing on what is popular just for a few extra tickets being sold. Sure they sell magnets of turkey legs and put up pin stands every 15 feet, but they would never gut a classic attraction with and fill it with their newest blockbuster movie. It's time to Let it Go, I need to fill my passport with stamps by eating and drinking at all these new outposts.
