So who's had to cut or color their own hair?

I get my hair cut every 3 or 4 months. At 6 months now and ready to trim the bottom myself tomorrow. Wish me luck. At least we have a good pair of shears but my hairdresser is 1000 times better at finishing the ends.

DS17 has grown out his beard and a thick mop of hair. Both could use a shape up but it looks good on him. DH buzzed all his hair off, lol.

I'm not going to brave coloring . I have highlights and I don't even know where to begin. My hair is all the same length but lately I've been craving bangs. I'm fighting my urge to cut my own.
I used to upkeep my highlights at home with a hook & cap kit. Instead of pulling the hair thru, I'd only pull small loops of the roots. Kept it healthier too. Then after rinsing the bleach I'd tone my whole head. Doing the back in a mirror is a pain. Sometimes DH would help, he actually did a good job.

I've never tried cutting new bangs. That's adventurous, lol. Plenty of people do it on yTube.

I have a short, layered style so I get a cut every 5 weeks and every other visit, I get highlights and a better "base" color put in. I had my hair cut/highlighted around March 1st, so I've only missed my cut that was due on April 6th. My stylist contacted me and has me scheduled for both the cut and color on May 11th. We think (VA) will open to salons on May 8th but I'm not too sure about that. I think if we don't, my stylist will probably take care of me in her home. I think she's been doing that but I haven't opted in on it.

All that said, I did "snip" some weird, wispy things off my bangs and around the side of my face. I had ordered some really sharp hair cutting scissors when this started (they work great) and used them. But my hair is looking pretty "clumpy." It's been like 9 weeks since my cut and I *still* have short hair. This is why I can't grow it out. It grows so slow.

I normally go to the salon once a month for a trim and color touch up around the roots. I went in a week or two before we shutdown in March and had highlights put in.

I just did my second root touch up. I was scared to the first time, but they came out so good that I’m probably going to do them myself more often and space out my salon visits. I like place I go, but it costs a small fortune to have my hair done.

I’ve also glazed my hair twice to add shine and have discovered purple products for my blond highlights to keep the brassiness out. I trimmed my hair around my face, even though I really didn’t want to. It was getting way to frizzy and out of control and I’d normally be on my second cut by now. I didn’t do a great job, but it’ll do. I won’t touch the rest of my head.

One thing that is starting to look funny is my highlights are growing out. Unlike a PP, my hair grows pretty quickly, and if our salons don’t open soon I will have to figure out how to deal with them.

I buzzed my husband’s hair a few weeks ago, and will probably have to do it again soon.

I've been growing out my hair color for over a year, so I'm used to the look of roots mixed with that distinctive sparkle of silver. It pretty much looks like an intentional ombre now. A hair gloss really helped in the awkward times to cope with the demarcation line. I used the Kristin Ess brand that you can get from Target for $14. It lasts about 3-4 weeks while it slowly washes out. I enjoyed how it reduced the brassiness in the fading hair color. Right now I'm playing with shades of Overtone, tonight I'm mixing rose gold with purple!

I've trimmed my bangs, but there's no way I'm attempting a cut or color. Hairdressers in our state can start opening on the 11th and I have an appointment on the 12th. They're only allowed to cut and color roots, but that's enough to get it looking close to normal.

Color--all the time Cut myself, almost never. But I am at the point where I am ready to. My hair is longer now than it's been since High School (decades ago, lol), and the first order of business after the stay at home order is lifted, is to get a decent haircut!

Mine gets highlighted, don't have a lot of gray just a tiny bit around my hairline but my roots are coming in so dark that I just used Clairol Root Touch Up in light blonde and tried to do a highlighting affect on it, touch up the little bit of gray and luckily does look a little better. I have medium long layered hair with bangs and it's not going to be easy to cut it but I have snipped at my layers and bangs, it's going to be pretty bad in a bit lol.

Gave DH a minor trim last night. Nothing dramatic, so it looks okay -- not really noticeable, which is what I was aiming for. Just a clean up, more than anything. Now that the weather has turned quite warm, it helps to take some of the thickness from his hair. Not asking him to return the favor, though. I'll just wait until salons reopen here. My hair is already too long now, so I can live with a few more inches.

I color mine every 6 weeks myself anyway. Been waiting a little longer this time, since we’re not really going anywhere, but I have a box ready to go. Badly need a cut, since I normally wear an asymmetrical bob, but I’ve started wearing it curly/wavy with some curling mousse and an quick shot of the diffuser to lock the curl in. Honestly, this is so mich easier, I may just get a trim and stick with it. DH on the other hand....looks like a bushman! :rotfl2:

My stylist is selling color kits that she delivers. That way I can dye my roots at home, but with my color formula from the salon. She send it with instructions about mixing the products, gloves, and the brush to apply. I've done it twice already.

I haven’t cut my own yet, but I bought a set of clippers and have cut DH’s hair twice now. I’m getting the hang of it and he doesn’t look too bad.

I used the clippers on my husband's hair twice now too - second time came out much better than the first! (Well, except around one ear, oops!) I dye my own and have 4 boxes of my favorite (discontinued) hair color left. Colored it a few weeks ago, but might not do it again until September or late fall, and and just go more blonde for the summer. I trim my own bangs, but just recently went from a medium length straight cut to a short layered one. Now I look like my 1970's grade school pictures, or Carol Brady from the Brady Bunch! Or, maybe Eve Dallas from the In Death series by JD Robb (AKA Nora Roberts)

I’m in MA, so same. Oh, well, seemed like a good idea at the time.

Same here, in MA. I always color my own, too cheap to pay 150-200 for color. L'Oreal 10.99:D I do need a cut badly, right now mine is long and very fine so all I can do is basically ponytail. I have to have it pulled up for work. Pushing 59 with a ponytail - darn I used to laugh at those woman - who knew!??!?!?

I frosted my hair by using a cap and pulled the strands with the hook that comes with it. I haven't done this in over 20 years! I wasn't worried since if I messed up it could be fixed. I'm sure my hairdresser understands. My hair is long so I was hoping I wouldn't get matted hair coming out of the cap. With a little patience It turned out nicely. It's just enough to get me through a month or so. I wouldn't be surprised if my sun kissed blonde will turn brassy in a week.

We (my hubby and I) have been coloring my hair at home for years. I have actually decided to let it go gray during all this just to see what it looks like. I'm kind of digging it, so I'll probably just keep it natural. I do have sort of an ombre effect going on right now. My natural color (before going gray) is a dark brown/red/black mix but I've been dying it med. golden brown for years. That comes out sort of redish. I'm wearing it long now because I go through phases so it's gray/dark brown at the roots to about 2 inches then fades to the light brown color. I'm planning on going and getting most of the length cut off when this is over, probably to my chin or shoulders so the color won't look so weird. I cut my bangs myself and actually trim the ends myself most of the time. I figure it's just hair and will grow so any damage I do to it won't last but a few weeks before it's grown out. Hubby and dog are both a little shaggy right now. We have a yorkie that we normally keep in a short puppy cut and she is looking like an ewok right now. Hubby got his hair cut around mid to late March so he has a sort of 70s shaggy thing going right now. I'm not trimming it for him, it's stressful enough when he has me shave his neck. He's always complaining I don't get it straight. The man has worked from home for the last 15 or so years and only goes out to the grocery store, pet store and drive throughs most of the time. Does anyone really notice if his hair on his neck is not straight?

Well I pretty successfully highlighted DD’s hair with bleach and foils a couple of weeks ago. First time I’ve ever attempted anything like that. We were both very sore and cranky by the time I was done. Our hairdresser works hard for her money and makes it look so easy!!! It is NOT easy!!!

It turned out pretty good in the end, but I just about had a heart attack when I took the foils out. It looked so yellow. I thought I’d messed it up for sure. But after she washed it and dried it, it looked pretty good. There are two tiny spots where I highlighted a bit too heavy (can’t fix those), and two small spots that need a touch up, which I’ll do in a day or two. She's been using a purple shampoo to tone it a bit. At any rate, it looks a whole lot better than it did with 3 inches of dark roots showing.

Anyway, the supplies only cost $38 vs the regular $200, and we have enough left over to do my hair too, but I'm not sure I trust her to do mine. I may just touch up my roots at the part and around my face and call it a day. I trimmed my own bangs weeks ago, but my layers are all growing out, and I'm not about to try cutting those!

I don't color mine anymore. I embraced the grey and had all of the color cut out of it. I was due for a hair appointment 2 weeks after Louisiana locked it down.

I had the pixie mullet going, so I cut it and had my husband buzz the very bottom. I snipped a bit off the front and ordered headbands. I'm just going to grow it out now.
