So what should happens to cadets in uniform

So by your statement, the "stupid" ones come back with PTSD and suicidal thoughts? That shows a lot of compassion for veterans who do suffer from those conditions.
Maybe you should be a psychologist for the military and police since you feel you can determine who will have PTSD.
Not “stupid” & I didn’t make the original comment, BUT, those who are unstable to start are more likely than others to come back with more problems. I believe that’s what the pp meant. And, I am a mental health professional.

You can shake you head all you want but it is sad that you think veterans return home to become police officers that abuse their powers. That's on you not me.

Nothing is “on me.”

Every single profession has bad apples. It’s very unfortunate, but true.

The person you quoted purposely twisted my words to fit their narrative. You knew what I meant. :)

It is exceedingly obvious that they weren’t playing the circle game. Anyone who suggests otherwise is likely looking for some way to excuse racism by pretending that even blatant racism is something innocuous. And even if someone somehow has been living under a rock and hasn’t heard of this sign of white supremacy, once enlightened there is no longer any excuse for blaming clear racism on a dumb game.

I assure you I don't live under a rock. I am an adult, gainfully employed, educated, mother of two and the ONLY way I know about this so-called sign of white supremacy is through reading this board. However, the white supremacists haven't converted me to their cause, and yet I use the symbol for other reasons. Reasons that every one I know in my real life understands. Intention matters. I could smile and someone could come up to me and say smiling is the new racist symbol, but I mean, you do you. I do me. Thank you.

Prejudice? Are you unaware of what our troops face when they come home?
Considering I've been married to an active duty soldier with numerous deployments under his belt for over 20 years...I'd have to say I'm pretty aware. Your comments and blanket statements implying that these cadets are the kind of ppl. that will end up being suicidal or turn into abusive law enforcement officers is absurd and beyond ignorant. You knew exactly what you were stating, so don't start acting now like you were trying to empathize with what our military members or law enforcement for that matter go through or might experience. Your statement was completely out of line and prejudice.

That's not at all what the OP stated nor was that at all what this thread was about when he/she posted it. Looking at their next few post - one of which being just "not my problem," it's obvious this poster had ill-willed intentions posting on this thread at all.

To quote you "not their/my problem."

How my post affects someone on the Dis is not my problem. But by all means keep getting worked up.

Do you get it now? I don't care how that particular poster felt about my post. Does that finally make sense to you?

Thanks for explaining my mind to me. Had no clue what I meant until now!

Interesting. It seems you feel that somebody else is interpreting your communication in a way you didn't intend and you don't like it. Perhaps the cadets feel the same way.
I'm tired of the same people twisting themselves into knots and saying "gee golly whiz, that's not what they meant" to defend this racist behavior. That's why people continue to do it.
Repeating myself.

The thread seems to have broken down into two camps:
1. The cadets did something, but the intent is unclear to us. One of the things (racism) is far worse than the other (stupid).
2. The cadets are clearly racist and we have all the facts we need to declare them so.

Might be time to close this thread.

I agree with your "camp" theory. I don't understand the "time to close the thread" comment though. If you don't want to participate, don't. If you think someone has broken Dis guidelines, report them.

This is a discussion forum. I am not bothered by posters engaging in a discussion. It's not unusual for folks to have various opinions.
I'm not sure hyperbole in any discussion makes someone's points more convincing.

Since we're repeating ourselves, can anyone answer this question? I mean the ADF shows the "right side up" as a (potential) hate signal. But the images I saw of this incident, all the cadets were holding the sign either sideways or upside down.
If anyone would like to try to explain, I can understand why a "right side up" OK sign could be taken for "White Power" (three fingers pointing up are a W, the circle of the index and thumb added to the arm are a P), but how does holding the OK sign upside down (much less sideways) make that? Wouldn't the three fingers pointing down be an "M"?

Just to be clear, the ADF site shows the hand signal in both up and down. Scroll to the bottom of the page. https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/okay-hand-gesture

What matters is intent. I agree it's not always simple.

Additionally, in the case of the cadets, did they choose to represent the uniform and their academy in a positive or negative way?
If it was a middle school game, it's sad to me they have learned so little about how to represent themselves in public .
