So... what jobs, if any, still get a holiday bonus?

Office manager in a small law office. We get a bonus in the spring and at Thanksgiving, not guaranteed and the amount can change due to cash on hand, but we've gotten one every time in the 14 years I've been there.

We also got a Harry & David Tower of Treats last week and an Amana ham.

I received a bonus that was prorated since I started at my current company in October. It was a generous amount, presented at our work holiday party which was completely covered by the company. The company also elected to cover the taxes that would normally be taken out of the bonuses. :thumbsup2

I work for a publishing company as a magazine editor.

I started my job in August (front office of a factory/warehouse). I wasn't expecting anything, but was given a bonus that was the equivalent of 1/2 week's pay. The bosses also gave small gifts and took the entire company out to dinner last night. :thumbsup2

My wife's best friend works for a family business. 12 employees total, they get HUGE Christmas bonuses.

That's the good part.

The bad part, no paid vacation, no paid sick time, they have to work holidays for straight time pay, and no health insurance. But all the employees agree, that bonus more than off sets the lack of benefits.

My husband got a company sweatshirt.:rotfl2: and a raise!:cool1:

Yeah, we got company sweatshirts and a $25 gift card, and a week later an email from the payroll department warning us that they would be listed as income on our next paycheck , and taxes withheld based on the value.

Been getting gift cards and company shirts for 35 years, NEVER been listed as income before. However, after Googling it, it is the correct thing under the tax code. (althought it is noted that many companies opt to pay the tax on the gifts for the employee)

My husband is plant foreman for a small family owned business. He gets a bonus but amounts are different year to year, this year it was close to 2 weeks pay. They also get a paid for dinner.,,sometimes just food brought into work in the breakroom or like this year it was held at a local restaurant.

My company is in the top 25 of Fortune 500 and we get a Happy Holiday email from the CEO along with a "thanks for all you do". We also get an after Holiday party that if we want to attend we get to pay for.

My husband does IT at an agricultural firm and gets a bonus. It is based on how the company is doing, though.
I'm a SAHM. Maybe I can convince the kids to give me a holiday bonus. They have more money than I do!!!!! :rotfl2:

I work in education, so no bonus. DH works for a government contracted company and he has no bonus. His company did host a nice dinner in a local hotel, which was very nice. Nice appetizers, open bar, casino games......it was fun.

I coordinate a district program which has about 45 people. I always host a lunch (I make the food- last year was baked pasta with salad and bread and this year a Mexican food bar) and give everyone a small gift. This year it was Bath and Body Works items (bath gel and lotion). Between giving to the office staff at my site and the district office, custodians, etc, I give about 65 gifts.

Don't receive a holiday bonus per se; we receive a bonus in March based on prior year's results. There is a company-wide party that's really top of the line, but it's about two hours away so I don't attend every year. We also have a more modest district holiday party that's paid for with district funds.

My immediate supervivor usually gives me and others at my level a $100 gift card paid for with his personal funds, along with a small gift like a box of chocolates.

My father's company gives a bonus and a lunch party. They are a privately owned service business. It's actually a nice time with speeches from the company pres & founder about the company's history, what they do and what each person's effort contributes. New and old employees are recognized. They did have some paid for weekend parties (food, band, etc.) but it sucked up a valuable Saturday during December and too few people wanted it. Instead the owners opted to give everyone Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off as paid holidays this year (along with New Year's Eve and New Year's Day). Everyone was super happy about getting two long weekends and a short work week over the holiday.

Christmas bonuses are gifts from the owners that come out of company profits. Public institutions like schools, hospitals, fire departments use public money. They don't have profits, by definition, only budgets.

I'm actually kinda proud of my dad's company. They've given bonuses every year, even when the company has been running a loss. It's very much a family-owned business with a community atmosphere to it. They work hard but they do care about each other. Growing up with that made me appreciate those small under 100 employee businesses. Corporations are too big and impersonal.

I work in the oil/gas industry. The company I worked for last year gave bonuses every February. The amount was based on the previous years profits, and how good you performed. So if they had a good year, you could get up to 30% of your yearly salary. I usually got around 25%. Which was a nice chunk to get a couple months after Christmas. My current company I work for does not give bonuses.

I have 2 cousins who work in oil/gas industry in Calgary. The money is amazing. And even more amazing when they get laid off. One has a nice house on a private lake out by Glencoe Country Club....."paid for entirely by my severence pay" from when he was let go from jobs.

Yes. The severance packages can be amazing. My last job, my boss got 2X his annual salary for a severance package, when he was laid off. I bet it was high $300,000's. He just got another job the next week at another oil company. I would have gotten 5 months, but they outsourced me to another company. So I got nothing. There is tons of money in the industry up here, but it is a volatile industry. Lots of ups and downs.

DH got a small bonus this year. It was enough to treat the family to our favorite burger place and pay a bill! :thumbsup2
As a stay at home mom no real bonus. DS #1 told me that this was the best Christmas EVER! I think that is the best kind of bonus! :lovestruc

I was talking to a lady I work with who just got a day job at a manufacturing facility that is privately owned and has just 9 employees. She told me she got a holidy bonus and they took everyone out to lunch at Chillis. Also she gets the next 2 weeks off with pay.

Another guy I know from I group I am in is an engineer and just started with a new company after he was layed off last summer. He got a bonus that was equal to about one weeks pay.

I work in a Catholic school. Last year I got $50, this year I got a ham.

Bet the CEO got a nice bonus.

Disgusting.

Where I worked managers got nothing. The VIP of marketing got 350 thousand dollar bonus. Guess he was special.
No one gets a six figure Christmas bonus, I am sure that is a performance bonus. This is why companies should refrain from giving performance Aly around the holidays. I EARN my bonus and is part of my total compensation and is thus included on my w-2.

Again, that is not a Christmas bonus, which is a GIFT that you didn't have to earn.

actually not likely that a large company would give a CHRISTMAS bonus. CEOs have Very clear measures that they must hit in order to EARN their performance bonus.

I quickly learned to hate bosses who hand out performance checks at the holidays. My first year working in my professional career the hiring partner made it very clear what the expectations were for EARNING the annual bonus. I met all the targets and was pissed when he walked around with a Santa hat and handed my EARNED check as if it was some sort of gift onChristmas Eve. That check was not a GIFT!

My current firm gives performance bonuses inOctober which is perfectly timed since it is early enough to plan put my Christmas shopping. Depending on my performance rating and the company's performance my checks can be significant.

As far a Christmas bonus , I did receive a bottle of wine and a $100 Amazon gift card. I similarly bought small gifts for my staff.

Hmmmm. I guess my company was wrong when they called it a Christmas bonus. But I guess you know more about this than I actually do, me working there and all. :rolleyes

Anyway, who cares if it doesn't meet the official criteria of what a Christmas bonus should be. It was what the company called it. I got stock options for what they called performance bonuses.
