We made the switch last summer.

A year ago, our monthly oil bill was $500 and change.

Today we got our gas bill for February-- a cold month that brought over a foot of snow to Long Island. Just out of curiosity (since I'm not the one who pays the bills) I asked my husband about the difference.

Our new gas bill was....

wait for it...

$91 !!!! (And that includes the gas dryer and oven we were already powering.)

So that's over $400 in our pockets this month alone!!!

I dud this with an antiquated furnace and went from $800/ month to less than $200. It paid for itself, wish I had done it as soon as I moved into the house:-)

We had a similar experience, only we switched from electric to wood.

This winter we've saved $3-400 per month and have had the luxury of actually being warm! :)

Congrats on your investment paying off!

We switched in the fall! What a difference. We'd spend about $1200-1500 for the winter in oil (and I rarely would turn on the heat!!). So far this winter, our gas bills Nov-Feb are just over $500, and like you, includes stove & dryer...and that's with the heat ON. With only a few weeks or so that the heat will need to be on, we're looking at less than 1/2 the oil costs we're used to. :cool1: Best money we've spent on this money pit of a house so far!

We're not doing the budget w/ Nat Grid, I prefer to pay for my heat in winter only....otherwise, it'd be about $80 per month spread over the entire year.

When we got this house 6 years ago we went from having oil to gas. The only thing I dislike about the gas is that the air is so dry in the house. But the savings is nice!!

We are in the process of being converted. Waiting for national grid to bring the line. I cannot wait.

:cool1: Lucky you!!!!

I wish we could convert....no gas lines around here.

We had it in our first house and it was so much cheaper and cleaner.

We have a 40 year old house, decent size, and heat with oil. We use about 250 gallons of oil for the entire heating season. So if oil was $4 a gallon $1,000 for the entire period Oct-April. Either we keep a cold house or we have incredible energy efficiency. I guess I should be thankful. ;-)

How much did it cost you to convert? Our oil bill is insane, heating a two family house in Brooklyn. I have been thinking about switching, but I keep hearing the the cost to switch is even worse..

I switched 20 years ago when oil was about a $1 a gallon (maybe less). I've never regretted it.

Sometimes I've spent $500 a year on gas, highest maybe $650 for the whole year.

It would be a great investment, though.

My inlaws just switched. Their house was destroyed in the hurricane and they had to buy a new heating system anyway.

They did not have to pay for the gas line to the house because they were within 100ft of an existing line.

The total cost was 9500.00 that included:

the heating unit
gas lines inside the house
switched from radiators to base board
1000.00 permit

They have a small 3 bedroom ranch.

I want to say ballpark $5000 total??

But at the rate we're going, it will pay for itself before next winter is over.

$5000 is seriously low. I had 4 estimates in the last month. The went from $7800 to $14,000 I know crazy!!! $7800 was with $1700 in rebates on lower end equipment. We are expecting to pay around $9000-$10000 with highest efficiency condensing boiler. Our house is 5 bedroom 3 bath almost 4000 sq feet.

If you want to save money and aren't near a gas line then maybe you could consider a pellet stove. We have one and spend about $1350 to heat from November to April. This includes the pellets, we use about 3 tons a year, and the cost of the electricity. Pellet stoves do still run on electricity base they have a motor inside. We still have oil to heat the hot water but if it ever needs to be replaced I will change it to propane or electric. We live in Maine and it has been a very cold winter this year.

A perfect example what new technology can do to recover natural gas. Prices have taken a big drop. The old way oil and gas prices where about running neck and neck.

Holy tamoley, that was a huge oil bill! (and a huge savings for you now!) We heat with oil and got a new furnace a few years ago. We keep the upstairs (bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen) at 68-69. The lower level (family room, playroom) are the same, but are heated with the wood stove as well, so the heat doesn't kick on much). Our oil bill is about $250/month. I'd love gas, but it'd cost a fortune to convert since we live so far out of town. I don't care for it for heat so much as for cooking - we have electric and I hate it. It took me 5 years to stop burning stuff since I grew up with a gas stove. lol

I am choosing Gas over electric when my house is built. Have heard my friends rave over the cost efficency.
