Why is it when I try to book a room I have to pay a 1 night deposit which is a lot for a non discounted deluxe room but, if I add on tickets they only want 200.00 deposit? Is this the norm for disney resorts?

I'd hold off on adding the tickets. The cancelation policy is much better on a room-only reservation

Packages (room + tickets) only require a $200 deposit, but the balance is due 45 days prior to arrival. After that time, cancellation/change fees kick in. If you cancel 44 days or less from arrival, you will pay a $200 cancellation fee. If you modify your reservation 44 days or less from arrival and the total cost decreases, you will be charged a $50 change fee. The change fee is usually waived if you make a change that increases the total cost.

Room only reservations require a deposit equal to 1 night's room rate + tax (which could be high, as you mentioned, depending on the resort), but the balance isn't due until check in. Also, the cancellation/change policies are more lenient. As long as you cancel at least 5 days prior to arrival, you get a full refund. If you cancel 4 days or less from arrival, you will be charged the deposit amount.
