I purchased my first DVC last year resale and am now having add-on-itis. I just turned 53 and my kids range from 16-25 (they still like to come with us). I know our vacationing will change over the next 10 years, but I also know my husband and I really love visiting the resorts and parks. My heart tells me go ahead buy a few more points, but my head says ugh you’re 53....you should have done this 20 years ago!

You are 53.
You are not dead.
Live life while you can.

Being DVC contracts are good for 50 years (newly constructed ones anyway) you basically have to be < 30 to realize value the full life of the contract. And, given its price, not a whole love of 20 somethings can afford DVC. (Of course, some can)

In a few years, God willing, you should have some grand kids to take. Having more point so you can get a larger unit may come in handy. I would add to the same resort, with the same UY so booking is more simple. Oh, and you're correct, you should have do this 20 years ago.

DW and I will be early 80's when our CCV contract expires. If we're here we hope we can still go to WDW every year...if not, then I hope our kids appreciate only having to pay MF's to enjoy some awesome vacations with their kids! If we add on (which I don't see how we don't) it would be to give them more points to divide up some day.

Your still very young!! Go ahead and buy more points-- if you need to sell at some point then you can or just pass your contracts on to the kids when you no longer want to travel.

No one knows what the future holds - you may have 30 more years of traveling to WDW or you might have 3 -- So make the most of the time you have.

Why not use the money you were going to spend on DVC (including future maintenance fees) and (1) put it into some income generating investment, (2) withdraw the required funds from the investment whenever you want to travel and book a cash resort. Even if you do end up spending more money, you won't be locked in to a contract you potentially may not be able to sell in 10 - 15 years. I know that the market is good right now for resale, but that may not always be the case. Especially since we are inching closer to that 2042 date.

As the PP's have said, you just don't know what is going to happen in the future. Keep in mind that your DVC investment doesn't expire when you do. Your heirs will still be able to enjoy it when you are gone.

My DH was 53 and I was a few years younger when we purchased almost 20 years ago. Added on a couple of years after that. We're still going and I have no regrets. While we've enjoyed many trips with family, we usually go as a couple and have a wonderful time.

If you can afford it, I say follow your heart. Old is not measured in years!

I'm 58 and we just added more points at our home resort yesterday and purchased a contract at another DVC location last month. I have no intention of sitting around as I age. I plan on going 90 mph and doing a Tokyo drift into my grave, yelling, 'Woo Hoo! What a ride!!'

Can I just say that I love this thread :lovestruc I retire at 56. At around 52 all our kids’ education investments etc will be done. During those 4 years I’m going to save up the cash to buy another contract to add to the 2 we already have. I plan on enjoying retirement 💯%.

Thank you for this thread. I needed this to push me over the edge. I'm going to buy DVC. I'm a healthy 61, love going to Disney World, and I'll sell it or give it to my kids, at least one of whom loves Disney too. The 14 year old girl only loves it if she can bring a friend.

Exactly what we're doing. Youngest graduated from college in December and I retired 3 weeks ago.

Age is just a number. Do what works for you. I’m five years older than you and recently purchased my first contract and have added on already.

So sorry, but boo, hiss...we're older than many of you are and love the resorts, love DVC (even with its "warts"). We pay cash and would be going on vacation there anyway. We watch the market and buy and sell as we desire. Our son (30) and wife of one year also love DVC and Disney. Our son has been doing this at OKW since 1996. I can't imagine not being part of DVC and we are waiting...for grandkids! We're all going to be there for Halloween this year! Goodness, you can't take it with you!

To add, I was very fortunate to go to Disney many many times as a child. Now as an adult and a family of my own, my parents bought into DVC club a few years ago (around their mid 50's). Now they will either travel alone, or with Grandchildren. I think they love Disney even more now! Them purchasing (via resale) has made the family trips even better and have inspired myself and my sister to look into becoming DVC members

We were 52 when we bought on first resale DVC contract. Ten years later we now have 6 total contracts.
We enjoy our timeshare when we go ourselves just as much as when we bring the GC. With Magical Express and the ease of airline baggage checkin we can see ourselves travelling to Disney well into our 80's even if we don't go to the theme parks.
