Snow Day policies

I'm not certain about DH's current employer, but most would just work from home.

A prior employer was large, and for plant closures due to hurricanes, they were to charge overhead (meaning essentially that the company paid instead of the client for whatever projects an employee worked). When the plant reopens, you use personal time/vacation for any extra time needed. One time, his building was closed an extra day, so those employees only had an extra day. (This was in a hurricane zone.) time clock didn't start until plant closure was set. They did allow for evacuations.

It is nice your husband doesn't want to cause a hardship, but it shouldn't cause him a hardship to do this.

I am a salaried employee for a software company. I don't believe our office was ever outright CLOSED for snow. We have closed early. When that happens, we enter in our time card system that the time is excused.

We also have a policy that during bad weather, we can take as much as 3 hours of "excused" time to get to work.

We also have the ability to work from home through a VPN Internet connection to our office network. People who decide to work from home have to work the full 8 hour day.

Public school...salaried. Anything we miss for snow has to be made up.

You don't have any built-in show days? In my area, most districts schedule 184 days, and Pennsylvania requires 180, so that is 4 days that can be missed without being made up.

I'm hourly, and if the company closes the office, I get paid for the day because it is them closing the office. However, because I work for the distribution side of a cable company, even if they close, I probably have to work as we have to clear off the snow from the satellite dishes so I'll get overtime plus the day's pay. Of course, we definitely earn it as we try to sweep off some of those dishes.

Does your employer pay you when your workplace is closed due to weather?...

Nope. I work per diem (substitute teacher) so if there is no work available - for weather or whatever reason - I don't get paid.

P.S. - The dog in your signature pic is adorable!

We can use PTO, no option for no pay. The Monday after the Christmas storm, ONE co-worker was on her way in and her neighbor (a policeman) told her to stay home. They ended up paying us for the day (I've worked there 11 years, and this is the first time they have done this). I told my coworker that if she had come to work that day, she would have ruined it for all of us! She agreed and said she was glad she didn't come in.

We charge our employees from their PTO account. If we ain't selling, there is no money coming in. We've only closed the office once in 23 years and that was last week. Global Warming.
