Does your employer pay you when your workplace is closed due to weather?

Are you salaried or hourly?

DH is self-employed and does pay his employees - I just wondered if others do. He doesn't make any money if the office is closed, but wouldn't want to cause a hardship for them and pays them if he closes the office.

Just curious what other employers do. I think my dh is a pretty nice guy. :lovestruc

yes, we pay our employees (full timers and part timers) if WE decide to close because of snow (meaning they cannot call in and say "i can't get there because of the snow" and be paid for the day).

we do close if it's dangerous out - we wouldn't want to put anyone's safety at risk.

My dh is a salaried employee so he gets paid either way, but he usually works from home if he doesn't go in.

I work for a large company but if the office is closed we take cancelled shift, so you can either use PTO from your bank, or go unpaid. If you call in due to weather if they are open, then you take PTO if you have any in your bank. Our PTO is sick, vacation, and holiday pay lumped into one bank.

I am a preschool teacher. Our center was closed yesterday and we are getting paid our regular hourly wages.

I am a government contractor, so no work means no pay (unless we use our PTO) since the government is billed for our work at an hourly rate. On the plus side, we have a set number of hours to work each month and we can work ahead or makeup hours during that month; so the rest of the month I will be trying to make up as many hours as I can for being off the past two days.

My DH's boss is a #$#@$. When NJ had a state of emergency, he expected people to be at work. If they didn't show they had to use a PTO day. Since no one had any days left (it was end of year and you had to use them or lose them), he was so nice and let them use 2011 PTO .

THere is a special place in hell for bosses like him! :rolleyes1

I work part time at a bank and am paid hourly. If the bank closes which it only has once then we do get paid for the day. If we have a delayed opening of an hour we get paid from our originally scheduled time. Like today we had a delayed opening of 10, I will still get paid from 9 because I was originally scheduled to be in at 9.

my job (I work for bank) has not been closed at all no matter how bad the snow in todays case the ice has been. They have had late openings and yes they do pay that time as emergency pay. I have stayed home twice already since my son's daycare (my husband and I are taking turns) and for that I can either use a vacation day, a sick day(I get 6 of them per year), or take it unpaid.

The company that I retired from and DH still works for doesn't ever close due to weather. If you can't make it in because of weather you have a choice. Take a personal day or an unpaid day.

My job is somewhat flexible. They don't pay you if you don't work, but you can make up the time, or take PTO.

Last job, if the company closed (once in the twelve years I was there, because the person making the call lived walking distance from the office :lmao: ), everybody got paid. If you took the day off by choice and were hourly, again, you could use a personal day or not get paid.

I am a Federal employee and yes I get paid when the building is closed. DH is a fed gov contractor and he doesn't get paid. He has to make up the time or take leave. That's because unless they are actually working on the contract, they can't bill for it. My two DS are in the same boat as DH, both are Fed contractors. We are all salaried.

With all the snow that we had in the Washington/Baltimore area, my office officially closed for one day -- everybody got paid for the day. However, if the office is not officially closed and you call out, you must take leave (you cannot take it without pay, unless you are out of leave).

I work in a school, and am salaried. I do get paid. If they schedule a make up day, of course, I work that day without extra pay. I don't know if we'll need make ups this year or not -- my district is pretty stingy with days off.

If our store closes down, or the mall closes down, we do not get any compensation. I suppose we could take PTO, but I doubt that very few people do that.

We very rarely close but when we do (for weather issues, bomb threat, gas leaks, power outages) we get paid for the time we were scheduled to work that day.

Public school...salaried. Anything we miss for snow has to be made up.

DH's work is never closed. They don't penalize people who can't come in, but you would have to use a vacation day to get paid.
I own my own business. If I don't work, I don't get paid.

My problem is that I MUST use a vacation day if I miss work -- and I only get 10 a year. I will do what I can to get to work, because those 10 days are precious. We cannot take a day without pay, unless we are totally out of vacation and/or sick days.
