While VERY similar, theya re two different snakes. It only LOOKS like an eastern diamondback, to another poster.... look closely and you see no "rattle".
I love snakes, but I can't quite make this one out. Maybe the OP can get closer and take a more zoomed in picture?



We used to live in Phoenix where there are so many encounters with rattlesnakes (particularly western diamondbacks). You're so right, snakes try there hardest to avoid humans and the best thing to do is to let them do their thing, and maybe take a few good pictures. You're smart to leave the garage door open. You probably will never see him again. From your picture he seamed to be shedding at the tail. So my guess is that he just wanted someplace cool and secure to shed his skin. They feel a little vulnerable when shedding. I hope this helped and I wish you the best.
It was really small. Even I was surprised how big it looks in the photo.
