I am trying to eat healthier which means less candy :scared1: Because of medical reasons I can't eat fruit or yogurt. Does anyone have any ideas for healthy food to snack on between meals?

I love carrots sticks and dip. I could eat the whole bag of carrots if I am not paying attention.

Good idea. I'll just have to make sure I don't go overboard on the dip:) I'll buy carrots instead of broccoli since I'm not that fond of them.

Just make sure you dip and not scoop you should be OK. I hardly use any dip at all.

Carrots are good and there are lots and lots of other Veggies out there. If you want you can send me a Pm and I will try my best to help you out. good luck.

I have had to go on a no eggs or dairy diet because of my DD's allergy to it (she is breast feed.) It was really hard at 1st, all I could think of is what I couldn't have, not what I could. I am very glad I decided to make the commitment to it myself, because it has helped me know what to feed her. Also if it is safe for me it is for her. (sorry gearing of topic here.)

My point is once you change your focus from what you can't have to what you can, a lot opens up.

Is just fruit and yogurt? Are other dairy products ok? cheese is good, string cheese is easy and convenient. (I miss cheese.!)

I enjoy Hummus and pita chips or bread (snacking on it now.)

Salsa and corn chips. (and guacamole, avocados are great for you and metabolism.)

Sometimes if you think of things as light meals instead of snacks it is easier to find things. A bagel with cream cheese or butter (I use vegan to make it dairy free and it taste good too.)

Good luck.

Nuts are good...tortilla chips w/ salsa or bean dip...cottage cheese by itself or used as a dip for veggies...a warm whole wheat tortilla...a small or 1/2 piece of roasted or grilled chicken...a hard boiled egg...whole wheat bread w/ a small amount of peanut butter, cheese, or jam...hummus w/ some type of dipper...pickles or olives...sardines...saltines...a can of low cal soup, chicken noodle, tomato, veg...a baked potato w/ salsa or mustard...plain popcorn.

My new favorite snack- CheddAirs. They are kind of like cheese puffs, but lighter and healthier (I'm on weight watchers). I think the brand is "EatSmart" and they are in the chip aisle.

Kashi makes some healthy snack bars...peanut, almond flaxseed, trail mix...they have protein, fiber and healthy fat from nuts. You could try almond butter, nuts, seeds (raw is best), avacado, or try a healthy muffin recipe. Good luck...I'm always interested in what's out there.

Salt-free pretzels, low salt dry-roasted peanuts. Nature Valley Granola Bars. Chips and salsa.

Can't eat fresh fruits/veggies (allergies), so gotta make do!

Ice, crushed ice. Yummy, healthy, fat free, cold, crunchy, what more can you ask for?

I eat over 5 lbs of ice a day.

Why snack when there is ice?

Thanks for all the advice!!!! I never thought of half of these ideas. I have to go to the store later and now I now what to buy. Thanks again everyone!

icebrat - the ice diet, I like it! 5 lbs. a day, holy smokes!

Try popcorn and carrots dipped in salsa.

I've been buying a lot of 100 calorie pack snacks that come 6 to a box. There's lots of varieties - Goldfish, Oreos, Ritz and so on. Just check labels first - Pringles sells a multipack of 100 calorie packs, but a serving of the fat free out of the regular canister is only 90 calories.

I also enjoy Quakes mini rice cakes. The kettle corn is my favorite - only 60 calories per serving of 7. They're a little sweet and a little salty (perfectly blended) - a nice alternative to potato chips.

You could also replace a snack craving with a serving of water.

Okay so I am closing my bag of Pepper Jack Doritos and dumping out the rest of my Pepsi and going downstairs and starting on the Malaysia diet of ICE for snacks. :thumbsup2

Seriously though that would count towards the 8 glasses of water you are supposed to drink a day!

:)

I go thru a bag of the little ready-to-eat carrots about every 2 days. YUM!

The only beverage I drink is water so replacing a craving with water just doesnt work, I've tried. As for the 100 calorie packs I love those! I hadn't event thought of the rice cakes. I appreciate everyones advice and now know that I wont go hungry :)

IMO, the best and most satisfying snacks combine healthy complex carbs, protein, and a little bit of fat. My favorites:

Glass of skim milk and some almonds
whole wheat pita, turkey breast, and some guac
Strawberries and one ounce lf cheese (or glass of red wine and cheese!)

I LOVE the cheese flavored mini rice cakes (I buy mine at Aldi's.) I CHOOSE to eat them even when I am NOT dieting (even though I SHOULD be, but that is ANOTHER thread :rolleyes2 ) .

Since we've adapted the Southbeach Diet lifestyle we've really changed our eating habits. It's been 2 years and I can't imagine going back to eating white bread or rice. They have such empty carbs and in 20 min you are hungry again. We use all wheat pasta, bread, hamburger buns, brown rice instead of white. We lost 18 pounds, lowered our blood pressure about 20 points on top and 15 on the bottom and lowered our cholesterol just by cutting out most of the junk. Sure we splurge every so often but for the most part we stick pretty close to the diet.

We bought a pop corn popper so we can control the amount of butter and salt that you can't control with microwave popcorn.

We have peanuts, cashews, cheese sticks, cottage cheese with tomato and cucumbers, whole wheat pitas filled to the rim with vegetables like sprouts and avacado, reduced fat wheat thins with smoked gouda, grilled veggie stir fry that you can just reheat, pria snack bars, we also do protein shakes with skim milk, but the thing that seems to help us the most is drinking more water. We also found that if we exercise at night around 4 or 5 at the gym we are less likely to feel like snacking after the kids go to bed.

Good for you for wanting to eat healthier. After your body adjusts it will get easier!
