Hi,
A Tennessee girl here! We've rented chalets several times, but I can only tell you about one area... we always stay on Ski Mountain Road, which is a fairly steep, windy road that is not a lot of fun to navigate for the first time in the dark. Daytime's not bad. It's been a few years, but we always call Barbara's (I can't remember the full name.) We tried one other rental place, and I can't remember the name of the company, but they put us in a dump that had flooded and smelled BAD. They did move us, but I'd never use them again. A lot of help I am since I don't know the name. If Barbara's is still in business, they should be able to send you pictures of the exterior, and more importantly, the interior of the chalet or cabin. Also, be sure to check its age.
We like Ski Mountain Road because there's a pool up toward the top that chalet renters can use, and it's the last exit on the main drag in Gatlinburg before you hit the Smoky Mtn. National Park boundary. If you want nature, you go down the mountain and turn right, and it's not far. If you want tourist nirvana, you turn left at the light, and depending on the time of year, it can take you 10 minutes to an hour to work your way through Gatlinburg.
We have gone in June and July and August to the Smokies. June is the nicest, because July and August can get muggy. But even in late summer, it's not too bad in the shade of the Park, and there are so many fun shallow places for kids to play in the creeks. October is gorgeous, but very, very crowded.
Last but not least, watch out for bears. They love to go through garbage cans at the chalets! Not nearly as friendly as the ones in the Country Bear Jamboree! Yeeehaa!
