Smoking Ban

Thank you Disney! Let us not forget that Walt was a longtime smoker and died of lung cancer. Of course there will be no stopping the vapers, who really think the rules don't apply to them because their smoke isn't as smelly.
I’m a vapor who absolutely knows that the rules apply to me, I don’t like it but if that’s the rule then I will follow as I did before, not every vapor or smoker is inconsiderate. I totally respect that people don’t want their children or themselves around smoke or vapor, but just because some people do have this nasty habit doesn’t mean that we have to be demonized.

Personally was happy when I read the news that DISNEY has decided to implement the new policy.

I'm fine with this, but my bf is a smoker. I'm assuming smokers will need to go back through security to re-enter the park. If he doesn't take a bag out with him, will it be quicker for him to get back in through the bag-free security line? I'm just worried he's going to lose a lot of time waiting in line to get back in.
He shouldn’t have to go thru security again of the smoking area outside the park is inside the security bubble, but if it is he will have to go thru security again.

I was wondering about this too. The people that I know that smoke are not exactly poor, in fact they spend lots of time and money at the fancy smoke shops getting the whatever fancy smoking things; it's a bit of a habit and a hobby, so this is befuddling. Of my closest friends and family only 1 one of the households with a smoker make less than probably 150, and several are high millionaires, including a Dr. and 2 judges. Again, that's a limited pool, but I was like "WTH, there goes a bunch of rich, indulgent grandads who are taking the kids somewhere else." That's what made it so shocking. Personally, after swearing off onsite, my dad had almost convinced us all to stay at CR for a our summer family trip. That'd be 4 rooms with a view and all the fancy meals, whatever any of the 3 kids would want, whatever hard ticket events we wanted (DAH for sure) and park hoppers for 7 for a week. He/DH/Dbrother aren't going to run to the front of the everliving park all day. It'd be a nightmare, and they smoke, it's their vacation too. DLP here we come?

ETA: there may be an uptick in the resell market on DVC now...lol.

I think what you are describing are the exception, not the rule

A study done by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta saw that on average smokers earn 17.5% less than non-smokers and 72% of smokers are from lower income communities

Like just about everyone above, I am thrilled. I'm also elated that they added vaping. I know "it's just water" or whatever, but It's still nauseating to those around you.

I don't want to wonder if I'm smelling ice cream & funnel cake on Main Street, or if I just accidentally wandered into someone's nasty vape cloud :crazy2:
Disney pipes in their own smells....

Well I don't think that describing a group's collective behavior in a negative way is "demonizing" them, but I stand by my statement: vapers generally do not follow no-smoking rules in public places. Airports, restaurants, sports arenas, movie theaters, restrooms, classrooms, the library where I work, and certainly every WDW park when I was there a couple weeks ago.

I'm not saying it's because all vapers are bad people or can't follow any rules, but for whatever reason many of them do not think that traditional no-smoking rules apply to their version of nicotine use.

Seriously? That is just surprising. It's a bit of a luxury indulgence in my mind. How the hell do most people afford to spend like 300 or whatever it is a month on cigarettes? I figured if you smoked, you had the resources for such. It's been well documented here that I live in a little bubble though:) I'm pretty sad about the news TBH, but then again, it's just a theme park and it's definitely a first world problem. I love WDW, it's easy and convenient, but this is one step too far. I always thought they'd take away park hoppers first and that would be the straw that broke the camel's back. I said my experience is limited, but you can see why I'm so surprised.

Yesterday I was looking at adding a few days in Disneyland on our way back from Hawaii, but after this news I guess if we do decide to stop we will be going to Knott's.

Hilton Honors members earn x% more than average. Give them emh and a 60 day fastpass window.

Wonder what the economic data of wagon owners is...

It's funny how those people that do the fake coughs when walking by a designated smoking area never complain when the park is full of thick firework smoke and falling embers. I guess firework smoke is the healthy variety.

Not trying to be mean....but, how do you KNOW their cough if ' fake' . Both of my children cough when passing any smoking section. I can guarantee my 17 month old baby isn't ' faking' her cough. Anyone has the right to smoke, but keep it away from innocent people who don't want to smell it/ breath it in. Some people have asthma so bad that even one whiff of cigarette smoke will cause an attack. Be kind, be respectful to all.

When someone is smoking and somebody nearby coughs, the smoker probably feels a lot less guilty if they can convince themself that the cough is “fake”.

This is kind of confusing to me. I'm not a smoker, but it seemed to me like there were some perfectly secluded areas within the parks where DSAs make sense. Like the step down area between SM and the bathrooms in MK. Or, the area behind Baseline at HS. Of course, some of the areas made no sense at all...Like the DSA in Italy in WS. It seems like they would be better off limiting the DSAs inside the parks. This new rule could potentially put a much bigger burden on security from those exiting and entering the parks several times per day.

Historically tobacco companies have spent most of their money advertising to lower income areas - at least partly tied to the connection between levels of education and income - knowledge of the the negative impacts of cigarettes and lower income areas tend to look for more immediate gratification ... and once you get addicted harder for them to quite/afford ways to help them quit

It might be changing now that cigarettes have gotten so expensive as more and more taxes get added. Seems like kids in higher income areas are more likely to experiment as they can afford it

Body language. It's very easy to spot, especially when the wind is blowing in the opposite direction and their fake little "uh uh" cough coincides exactly with the point in time when they glanced over and visually noticed they were in the vicinity of a designated smoking area. I'm an ex-smoker by the way (haven't smoked in about 4 years), but it's not hard for even a nonsmoker to understand that smokers are treated badly and looked down upon whether they're following the rules or not. Now, this new policy will increase the occurrence of people smoking in random areas by about 1000%.

some areas were more secluded than others - also as the parks increase people are pushed closer and closer to those areas just to get by. And smoke can be carried by the wine - I know several times we wouldn't be all that close to the DSA but could still smell the smoke coming from it

And as has been mentioned a few times, people didn't always stay in those areas and theoretically will be easier to tell people you can't smoke anywhere vs trying to get them into certain areas

I think they could have done other things - make them more secluded, add fans/filters to suck up the smoke ... heck put in those glass cubes like they have in some airports.

But this is also the way society is moving with more and more spaces being smoke free - all restaurants and bars in many cities and lots of open spaces too in certain places as well.

That’s fine stand by it, that doesn’t make it any more or less true. You are generalizing a group of people because a few of them didn’t do the right thing. I agree that’s wrong but it’s also wrong to make statements about a group of people when you have limited exposure to them. Are there people that break the rules sadly, yes, but there are people who have a legal habit that do follow the rules. I smoked for 25 years and never smoked in unauthorized areas, I’ve vaped for 6 and have never vaped outside of smoking sections. And if this is a issue pull the person on the side and say hey, that’s not cool. I would and I vape.

I'm thinking there will be more opportunity to snag reservations in the next couple of weeks than others on this board as people might.
