Smoking at Disneyland

So this will be our first time to DL. Always went to WDW. Didn't think this would be a thing but am I reading it right on the DL website? There is absolutely no smoking anywhere at all on the entire property? I know that California laws are strict about alot of stuff but no designated areas anywhere? We have one smoker in the group and there isn't enough time to go cold turkey. While that person can limit the amount of smoke breaks, they dont want to get in trouble by lighting up somewhere its not allowed. I know there is alot of opposition to smoking, but not being able to light up in a designated area anywhere seems a little extreme. Anyone out there experience the same problem? Thank you

That is correct. Any smoking will need to occur off Disney property (on Harbor just outside of the Disneyland welcome sign) or outside of Downtown Disney, or just outside of the Grand Californian property. That has been a rule for a while now, maybe 6-8 years now? The distance to go for a smoke break really isn't that long, maybe a 5 minute walk to get out onto Harbor from the Disneyland main gates. Of course if you're in Toontown or Pixar Pier that walk is going to be a bit longer to get out of the park for a break.

We also had a smoker on our trip, she was able to limit her smoking to once in the morning, once when we took an afternoon break at the hotel ( on Harbor) and then in the evening when we were back at the hotel because she didn't want to have to go outside of the park or make it so we had to wait for her.

I'm surprised WDW still has smoking areas, I thought both US parks did away with them.

The Grand CA has a smoking area, I assume that the Disneyland Hotel would have one too. At least this way, you don’t have to go through security again.

All Disney owned hotels removed their designated smoking areas. I believe you have to go out onto the street at Disneyland Drive, through the pedestrian gate. And regardless, if you enter DtD or DCA from GCH, you still have to go back through security.

I forgot about the small security checkpoint at the hotels. It’s usually so quick, I forget they exist. We haven’t been to the resort in over a year so maybe the made a recent change. My husband is a smoker and we are going at the end of the month so I will report back about the smoking section at the resort hotels. I would be very surprised if they did away with this since they host so many European visitors where smoking isn’t so tabu.

Personally I'm glad to see it be outside the property. I lost both of my parents pretty early at ages 55 and 65 due to smoking and I hate seeing people smoke in public. It's just a gross and unnecessary addiction. I also hate the people trying to sneakily hit their vape pens while in the parks. They should give free lightning lanes to guests who point out offenders and kick those offenders out in my opinion.

I’m sorry to hear about your parents. Mine both smoked as well. They also passed, but not because of smoking. I see it both ways. I quit smoking 17 years ago so I have the perspective as both a smoker and non-smoker. I don’t want anyone to have to breathe second hand smoke, but I believe that smokers have the right to smoke in designated areas that are away from others. Universal, Legoland, and Sea World still have smoking sections within the parks in areas that don’t bother others. (At least they did last year, I haven’t been recently). I think smokers and non-smokers can coexist happily if there’s a space provided away from the action.

I don't know about Universal Orlando, but Universal Hollywood closed its smoking area and doesn't allow any type of smoking inside the park. And Legoland CA's smoking area is outside the park.

Thank you. Lung cancer and heart attacks (and also extreme rheumatoid arthritis) are no joke and a much higher risk due to smoking.

It's fine with me if they do it away from everyone else in designated areas, but I am glad they are moving the areas outside of the parks/properties. It's an addiction that in no way is necessary for people to function. In my mind, just because someone is addicted to something doesn't mean they should be allowed to do it in/ have designated areas inside of amusement parks with tons of other people present. Their addiction and preferences shouldn't take precedence over all of the other guests' preferences and in some cases safety. I wouldn't want people being allowed to huff paint, inject heroin, smoke weed, etc. in a designated area inside of the parks either. Smoking shouldn't be allowed just because it is -arguably- better than some of the other unnecessary addictions

When there were smoking areas inside Disneyland it actually did bother folk FWIW. Smoke triggers migraines and those areas REEKED. If you are sensitive the area by Matterhorn was especially bad. I could whiff it in line. Even worse when there was a breeze as there often is.

I have only been to Universal Orlando, and Legoland had a smoking section the last time I went near where you drive the boats. I haven’t been in a couple years, so maybe it’s gone now.

I’m sorry to hear that the smoking areas in Disneyland bothered you. Maybe they should have put them near Autopia because that place reeks already. I’m happy they’re switching it to electric.

I empathize with you. Losing your parents is tough, no matter how they go. I miss mine all of the time. I am currently battling breast cancer so I know the cancer struggle first hand.
I must ask though, where do we draw the lines with regulations? Should they ban alcohol? Fattening foods? Soda? The point I’m making is that freedom is important. Once you go down the rabbit hole of regulating health, where does it end? I think that there’s a way to coexist without all of the regulations.

They’re basically banning a carcinogenic that affects others. We regulate a lot of things in our food and supply chain already. I personally don’t feel like adding an inhalant is a step too far, but agree being vigilant about freedom is important too! It’s so complicated.

Freedom isn't allowing about any behaviors even when potentially putting others in jeopardy or causing harm (plus smoking isn't a protected right or freedom). However, I agree banning smoking inside the parks shouldn't be and isn't about regulating addictions. It's that unlike drinking alcohol, eating fatty foods or drinking soda, cigarette smoking in others' vicinity does pose health concerns and hazards to secondary individuals.

Drinking alcohol has caused many fights in the parks so it does put others in jeopardy, but I don’t think it should be banned. Also, I’m not supporting putting smoking in a busy area. There are many freedoms that we enjoy that are not spelled out in the constitution. I’m for smokers rights in areas that can be avoided by guests. I’m not for smoking. I wish that my husband would quit. I hope that my son never tries it. I just believe that smokers shouldn’t be treated as lepers and that we can coexist with them.
