Smoking at Disney

Outside the park. They have a smoking area near the boat launch.

Idk I feel like they should have at least one in every park. I'm not longer a smoker but it would have to be pretty annoying to leave the park every time you wanted to take a drag lol

It also risks creating more congestion in the security areas. I don't see Disney wanting to muddle their foot traffic flow algorithms that badly.

Just to me.... why not ELIMINATE the issue? Provide appropriate venues in the BYPASS area, unused during daylight hours, NORTH and SOUTH entrance, so that ALL WDW visitors might feel that they have NOT become unwelcome? And everyone seeking to AVOID those that smoke will be comfortable?

On the face of it, that's a decent enough idea. I suspect the problem is that if Disney start moving smokers too far off the beaten track, they need to add staffing to watch over another area. Also this opens up an area that is only nominally 'on-stage' and makes it pretty much on-stage proper.

Fundamentally, while smoking is on the decline in the US, it isn't so much elsewhere, and WDW draws a large number of international attendees. I'd be stunned if Disney do much of anything, as the status quo mostly works.

Just my two cents by I would be sad if they did eliminate the smoking areas (and very distressed that there are only 2 or 3 available right now!)

I personally am not a smoker yet my significant other of 6 years is a smoker. We love WDW but I don't think he would go if they eliminated smoking in the parks all together. :(

He is one of the many people I'm sure who uses smoking to help calm them while in large crowds or in unknown places, due to anxiety or other mental health reasons. I certainly agree that they should find out of the way places, but we'll see if they listen if this ends up having some truth to it.

There must be anti-anxiety remedies which don't cause problems for other people. For example, nicotine gum.

Well of course but its a preference thing. He feels like it doesn't really work for him. And nicotine gum is for weening one self off of smoking. I mean it's a goal of his to stop but its more about the act of smoking.

But I totally understand that it's something that can affect other people negatively and he knows this too. He would most certainly walk to the front of the park if that's what Disney did to help other park patrons. Eventually I think we will get to being completely smoke free in a lot of areas but I think they should do some polling first. See how many of their guests do use the smoking areas. I mean smokers don't have to be total pariahs. Also I don't think smoking will really die as a fad, it's just been "re-imagined" as vaping and these people should also have an area.

I wish there was no smoking anywhere at Disney.
I don't care about your filthy habit until it intrudes on my clean air... Which it always does.

Do they have "drinking areas" in MK for alcoholics? No. They say suck it up and drop your habit for the day.

Actually they do enable these peoples habit, they allow drinking in all the other parks except for MK...actually they have wine now at BoG so they accommodate peoples "needs" there too. And I wish there was an area for the alcoholics cause then if people were acting a fool we would know just where we need to stay away from.

And hey I agree. It usually does waft its way over to someone but that's why I say they should put them in places where there aren't people. The change will happen eventually, since they are slowly taking the areas away already, but again, if they make the right accommodations these people won't disturb anyone. Unless they are rude...and those people will always be there.

If you don't have a BOG ressie, one cannot go to the "drinking area" and bust out a bottle of scotch.... And that doesn't even pollute someone else's liver!!!

True true. Though I feel like you're suggesting wine won't get someone in a tizzy.

I concur that smoking is awful but a lot of people still do it and good urban planning would eliminate the chances of people sucking it in. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

FYI: There are designated smoking areas in all theme parks, water parks, shopping areas, and resorts. For example, Epcot actually has 8 locations. For details, check out the link to the map that HopperFan posted on back on page 2 of this thread.

First, if this is true, I'll be thrilled. Smoking is a filthy habit and poisons not only your own body, but everyone around you. It has no place in a park like Disney. If you really need a smoke that bad, leave the park and go back to your car to smoke. No car? Go stand out in the parking area where fewer people have to breath in your second-hand smoke.

Secondly, for those who claim that vaping is a safe alternative to smoking, you obviously haven't followed recent research. A Harvard University study, funded by the NIH proved that more than 2/3 of vaping liquids had toxic chemicals in them. Pro-vapers are just trading one vice for another and doing so under the pretense that it is somehow safer and healthier than smoking.

It's well known that the chemical diacetyl is harmful so I'd be surprised if companies are still using this in their flavor concentrates. Most that I have seen advertise "100% diacetyl free." A few years ago, many of the fruity flavors used the ingredient diacetyl. In any case, I make my own juice and I know exactly what is in it - vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol (both of which are kosher certified, food-grade ingredients that get metabolized by the body the same way they do when they are eaten, which is the case when one eats just about any processed food from the grocery store), flavoring which is made from menthol crystals, and a trace amount of nicotine (I started at the same nicotine strength as cigarettes, and now I add an amount equal to about 700% less than that of a cigarette). The mixture also has zero odor.

So yes, some people are not informed, but I am, and what I can tell you is that vaping is the best thing ever invented to aid people in smoking cessation. Nothing works as good, period. For enabling the quitting of a bad habit that is more addictive than heroin, vaping should be glorified rather than demonized, but it's not, because mega corporations are losing big money (including the government for lost tax revenue). I was a 2-pack-a-day smoker for 16 years and since I started vaping a year and a half ago, I feel like a different person (physically)... zero breathing problems, zero fatigue/light-headed problems, chest pains, etc. As a smoker, my blood pressure averaged 150/90. Now it's 120/80. All of that and I've gradually cut my nicotine consumption dramatically, setting myself up to being able to even quit vaping much more easily if I ever decide to.

Do it like airports. Put them in a glass bubble and let them re-inhale their own darn fumes.
I don't want to smell that crap.

MG
I'd gladly smoke in a glass bubble to not inconvince others. I'd also appreciate it if we could muzzle screaming children because I don't want to hear that crap, and let's make overweight people stop eating cupcakes because that grosses me out and I don't want to see that crap.

The difference is if someone else is eating a cupcake that doesn't affect your health.
