I used to not cry at all, now about 50% of the time I do. Definitely more prevalent if I am wearing glasses versus contacts, but happens with contacts now too. It's annoying.

I rarely cry when cutting onions. I think the type of onion makes a difference. I buy sweet onions or Vidalia onions (when I can get them) and I think they have less noxious fumes (or just fewer fumes) so I don't cry as much. Occasionally (like when the men go shopping) we end up with a bag of all purpose onions or red onions, and then, watch out! Lots of tears.
I read somewhere that if you hold a piece of bread between your lips while cutting onions, it'll absorb the vapors and keep you from crying. Hey! I wonder if all those masks we have leftover from the pandemic would work! I might try this out, actually. Can't look any sillier than standing around with bread hanging out of my mouth!

The type of onions definitely makes a difference to me. Yellow onions will always cause a few tears. White sweet onions don’t. I mostly buy sweet onions as I prefer the more subtle flavor.

When I was younger, cutting onions made me cry. But I cut up onions frequently......most recently on Saturday....and I don't even think about it so I am guessing it doesn't cause any issues anymore.
But we buy mild white onions. My mom used to buy torpedo onions, and those may be are a lot stronger so that may be the difference.

I stick my tongue out when I chop them and that prevents the tears pretty well. The chemical that irritates the eyes is attracted to mucous membranes, so if your mouth is open / tongue out, it will go there since it's closer, rather than the eyes. (At least that's how it was explained to me). That's probably the mechanism behind the cracker or match in the mouth too. It works for me anyway.

I just cut some Visalia onions and I felt a bit of sting, but no tears today. I said 50% of the time, I will tear up.

I put 50%. It's like I'm going along just fine until suddenly -- but only sometimes -- I start to cry. Once I start, it's all over and I'll cry and cry and cry. But it's not every time.

Once in a while an onion comes along that is super strong and can cause irritations. But overall I am OK chopping onions.

I mostly use yellow onions and they always burn my eyes.

I do some of the tricks above to not cry. Mainly I keep my mouth tightly closed. Another tip is to cut the root end off last. Sometimes that helps.
