I rarely cry when cutting onions. I think the type of onion makes a difference. I buy sweet onions or Vidalia onions (when I can get them) and I think they have less noxious fumes (or just fewer fumes) so I don't cry as much. Occasionally (like when the men go shopping) we end up with a bag of all purpose onions or red onions, and then, watch out! Lots of tears.
I read somewhere that if you hold a piece of bread between your lips while cutting onions, it'll absorb the vapors and keep you from crying. Hey! I wonder if all those masks we have leftover from the pandemic would work! I might try this out, actually. Can't look any sillier than standing around with bread hanging out of my mouth!
