What is the difference between these? I'm so confused :confused3

When I ordered my dress the lady told me I needed a slip, I did not order one through her because I figured I could find a better price somewhere else. I have been searching online for slips but petticoats and crinolines are also showing up.

I am wearing a ball gown style dress (don't have a pic sorry). Not sure what I need underneath it  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA :worship:

if you want your dress to be extra poofy, search for full crinoline, super full crinoline, or mega full crinoline.

or... you can go another way. get a 6 hoop skirt to go underneath (hoops will keep it away from your legs, which is good in the heat)... or a 3 or 4 hoop skirt with a crinoline over it to soften the skirt more. ebay has some cheap stuff. i bought my hoop skirt for $13.

ETA: this is a pic of my dress with a hoop skirt underneath.

And if you don't want your dress to be extra-pouffy, you may not need anything at all. A slip (i.e., a simple satin or poly sheath with no hoops, tulle, layers, etc.) is only necessary if the fabric of the skirt bunches up around your legs—usually this is more for mermaid/sheath/form-fitting dresses. If the dress looks and feels fine without one, don't bother. Although, if it's going to be hot, I like the idea of hoops keeping the dress away from the body for ventilation.

i bought a petticoat/crinoline from pettiskirts.com. frankly, it was the most expensive accessory i had (like $160), but the texture and layers and comfort of it was awesome! very fluffy and pretty and soft! as lurkyloo says (which i didn't really know pre-dress shopping) is (no matter what kind of dress you have really!), you may need something under most kinds of dresses because even the poofy ones (mine was a ball gown) can bunch up between your legs as you walk - attractive! :thumbsup2

but go with comfort as well. mine didn't "need" anything poofy, but the pettiskirts are really soft and very ruffle-y at the bottom...

here's what some of it looks like -

here's the maximum poof of my dress - it felt like a giant, bell-shaped, cupcake but it wasn't as ginormous as it felt!

If you are wearing a ballgown style you might want to wear a crinoline under it. It will just give your dress a little more umph and help keep the skirt out a bit. Depending on how full you want your dress will determine how full a crinoline or hoop skirt you want.

I was married almost 3 years ago at WDW and at that time there were alot of Disbrides dying their crinoline. I dyed mine pink, and like sambycat's in blue, it made for some great pictures with the colored crinoline peaking out. You did not see the color at all while you wore your dress unless you picked up the skirt abit. I purchased it off ebay but do not remember the seller but it was under $20.00 so I figured when dying it if I messed it up it was not too much money lost.

One important thing to note, the larger the crinoline or hoop skirt you put under you dress, the shorter it will become so be very careful when you have your dress fitted to wear what you will wear on your wedding day. Some brides will even get a larger crinoline if there dress is just a little too long and they need to have it shortened a little and do not want to have it hemed.

I wasnt planning on getting a petticoat, but i think, thanks to you ladies, ive changed my mind.

What did you use to die it?

I just used regular RIT dye that I purchased at a fabric store. The color was actually more red - like the trim on the crinnie. The trim came out red and the material and netting came out pink. Looking back, I am glad it came out pink like it did with red trim - rather then having the whole thing red.

I think I used two boxes in my regular washing machine. It wasn't too messy and I remember following the directions on the box. When it is finished it is very wrinkled. I dried it in my dryer and hung it up. I ironed it (very carefully) and had it steamed along with my dress down in Disney.

I actually became friends with a disbride through these boards and she invited me and my DH to her wedding. I loaned her my pink crinnie and she also took some great pictures with it. She had it drycleaned and returned it to me a few months later.

Good luck if you decide to dye it.

Thanks Everyone. I'm still trying to decide. I don't think my dress needs anything to poof it more than it already is. I'm trying to debate the whole dying of a crinoline. It does make for some great pictures but I'm not sure if the color would show through my dress. I will continue on my hunt for something :)
