Sister Wives

Interesting perspective. I admit I don't watch it much, but I haven't heard them say much about their faith either.

Right, but if it is so important to them, it would mean they would encourage their kids to follow suit.

It seems the first season had episodes where they met with other plural families.

They've always said that they hope the children choose plural marriage, but that they understand it is not for everybody and want their children to make their own choices. I've always kind of respected that about them.

As to their faith, they are FLDS and when they lived in Utah they had a community and went to services within that community. Since they've moved to LV they don't have the same community. As the head of the household(s) Kody acts as the spiritual leader for the family and the hold services as a family every week. They only show it on special occasions, I'm guessing, because nobody wants to watch somebody else go to church lol.

They don't refer to themselves as FLDS very often unless they're denouncing Warren Jeffs and talking now about stereotypes because it tends to have negative connotations.

I'm pretty sure Caleb is not LDS. In the Alaska episodes, he was wearing an Alaskan Amber shirt.
Caleb is the brother of Cody's SIL Erica - the one that was married to his brother Curtis, who was killed in the motorcycle accident. It was mentioned several times that Curtis & Erica were born-again Christians and that they'd married after Curtis renounced FLDS. It makes sense that Erica and Caleb's family was never either FLDS or LDS.

Coming into this thread super late.

It's not something I would ever do, if DH suggested it he would be shown the door. I personally don't understand but not my circus.
As far as the kids there is pros and cons, nice to have lots of siblings and parental support but possibly more jealousy then most families (the kids from x mother get x, y or z and I do t)

From the women's point of view I do t understand sharing your husband and your kids with other "mothers" it is like having an ex husband with a new wife/kids but you all live together!

I understand better couples that both have multiple relationships (just do t believe in monogamy) although that also wouldn't be for me

FLDS denouncing Warren Jeffs would be similar to a Catholic family denouncing the pope. Except the pope isn't in prison. I think Cody and company are picking and choosing whatever religious beliefs fit their lifestyle, not trying to shape their lifestyle to fit any religion.

Why is Mariah so pissed at Meri? (I haven't watched for a while due to this catfish thing. I find it boring. There is not a doubt in my mind that if it had been a "real man", Meri would have cheated.)

The whole episode of Meri and Janelle trying to " work things out" with their therapist; I'm kind of in the camp of as long as they are cordial with one another especially in front of family members (which I always thought they were)...........who cares about digging deeper?? Certainly wasn't the most exciting episode, IMO.

Interesting. I didn't know about the brother who died. And I didn't know he had a brother who left the LDS or FLDS.

Did both brothers grow up in plural marriages?

I understood Warren Jeffs to just be the leader of that compound. I assumed there were either other compounds like that one (I thought that was just the largest) or people who live in plural marriages outside of that, like Kody's family.

Warren Jeffs was a "prophet" but as I understand it, there are many within the LDS, so I assumed there were many within the FLDS.

Just to wanted to clarify something. The Brown family are not affiliated with the FLDS.
They are somewhat affiliated with a "much more liberal" group known as the AUB, Apostolic United Brethren.

There is a huge difference between the FLDS and the AUB. The AUB is also known as the Allred Group. It is named after Rulon Allred who is Christine Brown's grandfather.
I googled a lot of this a couple of years ago when I was trying to figure out who they were affiliated with.

Last night's Thanksgiving episode was painfully boring. They have replaced last year's "validate" with the word "project" in my drinking game. Since when do you refer to setting up the Thanksgiving tables as a project?

If the goal in your drinking game is to actually take a drink, just don't make "job" your trigger word.

Because with all the light hanging and baby room preparing, there's apparently not time for anyone to actually work.

And I thought it was funny that Kody was disappointed in the reaction to the lights. What college age boy cares about something like that?

I also found it amusing that they are splitting Solomon's room, yet one of the older girls is still moving into that house. All while Meri has all those empty rooms..........

They are not FLDS and have no affiliation with Warren Jeffs. They have mentioned his name in passing as they worry that people will hear polygamy and associate them with that well known group.

They are AUB!

And no Kody did not grow up in plural marriage. The family was LDS. His parents did join AUB when he was in his late teens. His Dad was married to Janelle's mother. His Dad died a few years ago.

Its all explained in their book and the first season of the show.

Did I say I wanted to get fall-flat-on-my-face drunk though? Gotta play conservatively here.

Of course he should care, those light strands represent THE FAMILY after all!

I'll tell you if my hubby was hanging those lights while I was trying to get the house ready for 70 people to come over, (with a camera crew in my face no less) he would end up hanging from that little ring in the center!

i think planning and decorating for 70 people is a huge PROJECT.

Wow. Warren Jeffs isn't the head of their church. And if the pope announced that he was now assigning little girls to men to marry, and everything that went with it, I don't think that people who then denounced him would be accused of picking and choosing what religious beliefs they follow. Although, there's already a whole lot of that in most religions for other reasons.

Interesting. I will have to look when I have more time.

I knew a family who were another sect of Mormonism and didn't understand who they were until I looked them up. I think they were Community of Christ or something.

Spot on!

Do any of them actually have jobs? I don't think any of them, besides Janelle, actually work. What are they going to do when the show ends? The taxes on those properties are fairly high, then when you multiply that by 4. Then the mortgages, and paying for all the kids, college, etc. etc. etc. :scared:

Community of Christ was known years ago as RLDS. There are lots of sources on the net for the history of the Community of Christ. Many of their churches are in the Midwest. Basically their founders stayed in the Midwest while the Mormons went to Utah.

all the kids, college

I strongly suspect with the way the fafsa works ALL of those kids will be eligible to full federal aide and the state need grants available in nevada. I suspect this is in part why they weren't big on the some of the kids pursuing degrees out of state (out of state tuition/no eligibility to in state resident grants).

I kind of wonder about what happened with meri going back to college-she had mentioned it before the whole catfishing scandle (maybe the end of season before last) as a way of venturing outside the family/dealing with empty nest....
