Sippy cups

I forgot which poster said this, but IMO a 6 year old has no business using a sippy cup unless they have some sort of disability.

Curious...when did your kids stop using sippy cups?

disykat...my kids still use our tupperware cups, minus the sippy tops, once in a while, and they are 22 & 24!

Oh man I forgot!! I am not a parent so I have no input in this conversation. Never mind.

FWIW, my experience was with babysitting.

YOU START USING THEM AGAIN OR WEAR A :3dglasses BLACK SHIRT

My youngest DD2 only gets a sippy cup when we are out and about and not all that time either. Most of the time if we are out all of us share my WW cup and drink water out of the straw.

All my girls were tongue-tied and had surgery soon after birth. They are doing well with speech classes to catch up with their peers but the FIRST thing they told me in SP is to get rid of the sippy cups and only use as a last resort. They (SP theraphist) said the straws are so much better or a regular cups for correct lip rounding.

I don't let my kids take food and drinks into other rooms, because I just think it's a bad habit (for all ages) to always feel like you have to have a drink or snack with you.

Curious--do you sit down 8 times a day with your meals to drink your 8 classes of water.

Drinks are not only meant for nourishment--they are meant for hydration. Just b/c you are sedentary and in A/C--you still need liquids!

I am another Mommy who doesn't let food or drinks outside of the kitchen or dinning room in the house. They know they can go in the kitchen to get a drink anytime. Snacks I don't dole out as often.

Jenn Lynn, different kids' hand-eye coordination matures at different ages. Does she still tip over her glass on a regular basis when reaching for it? If yes, then I'd wait. If she doesn't go ahead and try it without a lid at lunch and just put half a cup of liquid in at first (so when it does tip you don't have as much to clean up! :) )
Good luck!

I can't remember the last time she tipped over a cup. She will drink out of our cups and does great. We are going to start going lidless at meals. :)

Well that explains your opinion! :rotfl2:

I'm officially through with this thread.

Oh and Skiwee :rotfl2: right back at you.

Not that I care at all about how old other people's kids are when they use lidless cups, I have to say that I got my opinions from working in a daycare before I became a mom. Like I said on the 1st page, we didn't allow sippy cups once kids moved to the toddler room (which was between 15-18 months and went to 28 months). Well I saw these 15 month olds drinking out of regular cups with no lids or straws so I thought "no reason for my daughter to use one past 1.5yo either!" So I wouldn't be too quick to put down childless people, they have some great ideas too!

She does use straws now (with and without lids on the cups) but never did the spout sippy, due to her own personal preference, not really anything to do with me.

Who are you calling sedentary? ;)

I don't drink eight glasses of water a day - please don't call the authorities! But no, I don't always sit down to drink something. Sometimes I stand or lean against the counter.
