Since RCI inception I see points renting for less than $7 on Rental Sights

Given a week can cost an RCI member as little as $200-400, they would usually make money even at $4-5 a point.

I'm not sure if maintenance fees on a week would ever be as low as $200, or even $400. I have a mere 49,000 Wyndham points, which is enough for 5 weekdays at Bonnet Creek (45,000 points), yet my MF is $300. I can deposit into RCI and get a week, as I did last year for a week at Orange Lake, but then I incur the $160 trading fee from RCI, bringing my cost up considerably.

There are a few S. African resorts that trade well and have exceptionally low fees. They are harder to find than they were before Black Sunday, but they're still out there.

It depends on specifics. Of course there's the yearly membership fee and the exchange fee and some maint fees. You're assuming one exchange and a direct points owned resort. For that the cheapest is likely under $300 for as many as 78000 RCI points. One of the LV resorts can give you up to 60K points for $300 in a 1 BR. But there are other ways to get points. I ended up with 525K points in my 2009 UY. Total cost (maint fees plus points for deposit costs) for those points about $1500. So far I've used those points (combined with my 2008 points costing $300) to reserve a 2 BR OKW for Thanksgiving, two 1 BR at AKV, 2 nights in a 3 BR for HH immediately before our Marriott weeks and a 3 BR Penthouse unit at Hacienda Del Mar in Cabo for next Jan all for a week except as noted. I still have over 300K points left. There are even cheaper ways to get points if you know how. As Brian noted, one way is to do points for deposit for SA red weeks esp at Silver and Gold Crown properties. I could have gotten five or six or more 2 BR units at DVC with those points at BWV, BCV, AKV and VWL. 5 would have added another $650 in exchange fees and if you included the resort services fee, another $500. That puts you somewhere in the $2700-3000 range, under $600 a unit for 2 BR units including all possible costs, even less for 1 BR units. And many that rent have the renter pay the $95 fee.
