"Significant" change in vision prescription in 6 months? (9 y.o. daughter)

Our naughty little puppy got ahold of Brittany's glasses and, even though it had only been 6 months since her last checkup, I figured I would just have her get an exam also. Well, she has had a "significant" increase in her nearsightedness, even though her astigmatism is the same.

He had her cover her eyes one at a time and try to read the letters on the wall, and I was really surprised at how big he had to go before she could read it WITH her glasses on. He had to move it all the way to where there were only three letters on the line.

He said he is hoping that it is just her one big increase in life and the rest will be minor changes. I was surprised and he got a prescription for her, although it didn't seem like she was able to read ALL the letters he wanted her too. (most of them, though)

Anyway, I really didn't think to ask him stuff. Is this huge of a change in such a short time common for kids? Is it something I need to be concerned (at least in the back of my mind) about? Am I just being a paranoid mommy? (::yes:: says everybody!!! )

He stated he would see her in a year, but really stressed to her that if she noticed any changes or if it became more difficult for her to see things, to let me know and he would see her sooner.

As a child, I always had significant changes. I could never go a whole year between prescriptions. I do have VERY poor vision as an adult (my prescription is still getting slightly worse) As long as they tested and looked for diseases, you are probably fine, but you might (if you don't already) see a pediatric opthamologist.

I always had new prescriptions twice a year, for a long time. I do have really bad eyes now but they only change once every few years.

What are the different glasses prescriptions? It is common for a child to change every six months, as a matter of fact, my prescription changed at least every year until I was 24. I have seen even as much as a couple of dioptor change, like -3.00 to -5.00 but not usually more than that. I deal far more with adults where I work though.

I was told by dr. that the few years before puberty big changes are common. My dd doubled her script strength every. When they hit puberty it slows down alot.

Same here, I would always have big changes in my prescription, up until my late teens. Then I would have small changes. It's only been in the last 5 years that I finally stabilized, and I'm 36.

My 13yo DD did that last year, I didn't get her eyes rechecked but I should have. I did it as soon as the year came up for our insurance and they'd changed alot. She hasn't complained this year and is almost due for her exam so it hasn't been something that happens all the time.

The same thing is going on with my nine-year-olds. Both failed the eye exams at school. The optometrist told me that failing the school eye test doesn't necessarily mean they need new glasses and that changing glasses too often will mean even more frequent changes down the road. One of mine is having trouble seeing the board, though, and I don't think they can hold out until a year passes.

Her astigmatism hasn't changed. I don't know how much exactly her script changed. I didn't see the numbers before or after, just going on what he told me.

Sounds, though, like it's pretty common. So, I'll stop worrying (yeah, right!!)

Thanks for the responses!

I know I used to rather blind myself (like 20/800), I just don't remember changing so quickly and significantly! Fortunately, I have been glasses free for 9 years, thanks to the miracle of raidal keratotomy!!! :earboy2:

just another agreement - i started wearing glasses at age 6 and got a new pair every 1-2 years after that until high school (when i was responsible enough to actually take care of them). by the time i was in my teens, if i put on a pair of my grade-school glasses, they did absolutely nothing for my vision, it had changed so much over time.
