Sick Cat

So, for what it's worth, I just got home tonight and she seem ssuper playful, chasing her favorite purple khyber crystal around like she used to.

Her food doesn't look touched though and she didn;t want the flaky treat she loved so much earlier.

Now I don't know what the heck is going on! :confused3

Keep your current plans to pursue further diagnostics and breathe a sigh of relief that she’s feeling good tonight. She’s been up and down so don’t expect that she’s going to be better from here on out, though I certainly understand being hopeful. Try to look at the trend of how she’s doing over the course of a few days instead of a few hours before trying to decide if she’s doing better/worse/the same. I know it can be so hard to figure out — that’s where your journal will come in handy!

Are you keeping track of the quantity of food she’s eating in a 24 hour period and comparing it to how much she would normally eat, or are you just kinda always encouraging her to eat?

I am noting if she eats a little or more - the food is always available. She did seem ebtter last night, but not as good this morning. I am trying to get a urine sample with these black pellets that don't absorb it, but she hasn't peed. I hope they're not freaking her out.

I wouldn't leave food down right now...my opinion . it's easier to monitor how much she is eating if you don't. Water is should always be available. Are you keeping tabs on her litter box? Also an important diagnostic tool. Input/output and behavior....important with a sick kitty.

I think it’d be good to quantify it in terms like “offered 1/2 can, ate half” so you can tally it up to know exactly how much she’s eating over the course of a day compared to how much she would normally eat. It can be hard to know how much they’re eating when we’re offering them food every two hours and they’re eating three bites at a time. Eating just a few bites looks like a poor appetite, but it may be a case where they’re not really hungry enough to eat because they’re being fed so frequently.

I think it’s okay to leave the food down since she’s the only cat who will be eating it and cats will often eat better if they’re not being watched. @BrianL just needs to make sure he knows how much he’s putting down and how much he’s taking back up so he can work out how much of it she ate.

Absolutely monitoring litter box. I jsut checked and there was poop and pee - just scooped it when I got up so this is super recent. She seems to refust to go on the collection pellets though! It's freaking her out, and I didn't want to prevent her from going at all, so opened the door to the other box. She ate some too and she seems okay and calm right now.

A change in litter boxes can definitely freak out our sensitive babies. Once had a kitty who was almost torn in half by dogs. Real estate agent accidentally let hI'm out while we were out of town. Our vet repaired his injuries but he wouldn't urinate or eat! He was ready to move to last resort meds/treatment. I brought him tender vittles and took him outside to relief himself. My house trained baby was CURED! Moral of the story...small changes can significantly affect our kitties.

So, she's eating okay today and seems like she's in a nice, calm place. I couldn't get the urine sample this morning and I can't store it over Sunday so I'll have to try tomorrow night so I can bring it in on Monday morning. It's the next step and at least that doesn't cost a fortune, so it's one thing we can do right away that may tell us something, or at least rule stuff out. For what it's worth, I'm at least a little more calm today.

Let's hope medication played a big part and is mostly to blame for this episode. Happy today is a good one for you and your kitty

It's better, thanks. She's still a little off though. I jsut keep reminding myself of the word "stable" and I don't think she's going to go into severe distress if I turn my back for five seconds. That's helping me cope too.

It sounds like maybe all the medication she had took a while to work its way out of her system, and that hopefully she’s on the mend now. You did a great job taking care of her! It’s hard when our beloved pets are sick. Hang in there!

I really hope so. I'm not 100% convinced, but I am starting to see some improvement, so that's good. Here's hoping!

I will definitely go to the mat for my pet. My previous cat, toward the end, he got the double whammy of kidney failure and congestive heart failure. It was bad, but we did everything - even cosulted with a cardiologist! They have cat cardiologists. This was with the same vet I am seeing now, so he knows that I don't give up on them.

Oh yes. We’ve seen doggie cardiologists, dermatologists, opthalmologists, infectious disease specialists, and probably a few others! Hopefully she continues trending toward better health. ❤️

Well, she seems a little better - though I am hesitant to say that. A little of her old self was popping through though last night, playing a bit. She "hunted" her feather toy and brought it to me in bed last night - a very encouraging sign! She's definitely not 100% but I am a bit more optimistic.

So glad she's doing better. Sometimes we can't figure out why the changes are happening and it's super frustrating. After the bad blood tests my baby had, I was expecting her to die, probably cancer, but she's doing great, like nothing's wrong! Just treasure every day, as I know you are. Cats are truly remarkable and only cat lovers realize how truly wonderful they are.

So, while I don't want to say that she is doing better so as not to get my hopes up, well, she's doing better. She's not 100% but there was a pretty clear upward trend over the weekend. Maybe that medicine is just working out of her system. She's eating better, though she still cries at me sometimes, which isn't typical. I did get the urine sample last night and I went ahead and dropped that off so they can test it. We can at least do that, but if there is nothing concerning and she continues to improve that may just be the end of it.

She's becoming a geriatric. Illnesses can knock us down a bit and maybe change us somewhat overall. Still hopeful for a positive outcome! Hang in there! Your kitty has a great advocate/caregiver!
