Sick and Tired of Hearing About This Adkins/No-Carb Craze

Couldn't agree more.

I haven't read the whole tread but I wanted to add my 2 cents... I really don't care what people eat that is up to you I just hope I am not paying for it in 10 or 20 years time when my health insurance is hiked up to cover the costs of all the additional heart surgery etc.

Why in the world would my HEALTHY EATING cause YOUR insurance to go up??? Eating Chicken, Beef or Pork with Low Carb veggies will cause Heart Disease? I just hope my Insurance doesn't CONTINUE to go up due to others developing type II diabetes from eating the sugary white stuff [and yes that is including bread, pasta, potatoes]. So I guess there are two ways to look at it.

The fact is that no published diet (that I know of), Atkins included, rely on processed food or just eating the foods you listed.
Sha_lyn, did I say there was a diet such as that? What I meant is that I have known people claiming to do Atkins, and that is what they would eat.

Okay, Ash aka Sky, just as long as MY health insurance doesn't go up because we have to cover all the fatties who are eating themselves into an early grave.

Charming... not

It depends on your definition of healthy eating...what you list there I would consider healthy (in moderation) however I seen people on Atkins binge on high fat low carb foods... I just think it will show in later years and yes I do think something needs to be done about the increase in Diabetes.

Interesting stuff!

You know, I eat loads of fresh veggies, chicken and fish. I also do not touch white bread, and rarely have any potatoes (I also rarely have any fruit, but I happen to think this is not such a great thing). However, I would not consider myself on a low-carb diet. I restrict my calories and that's that. But I eat whole-grain bread....I wouldn't dream of eating sandwiches without any bread at all the way people are doing now. And no fruit at all? Not that I love fruit, but something doesn't sound right about that.

Personally, I can't be in a state of ketosis...I've had kidney stones and other urological blips in my past and it just isn't healthy. Plus, many Atkins followers in my experience have breath issues...they are constantly sucking on mints and for good reason.

That being said, many of you low-carbers seem to be eating very sensibly to me. I think the inception of the Atkins diet (I remember all the early coverage with nothing but beef and eggs on all the magazine covers) heavily influenced most people's views. But they did change their image....I see alot more in the way of fresh vegetables and lean meats now and that's not bad at all. If it works for you, it works for you, and that's great.

I just want to add that while there seems to be some really healthy lo-carbers here, who make wise choices about protein and veggies, pretty much ALL the folks I personally know who have tried Atkins do it the steak and eggs route and it just grosses me out. So I think a lot of us here, when we think "atkins," think of acquaintances or friends we know who binge on the eggs, steaks, hamburgers with no buns, and some lettuce thrown in there for good measure...then go off of it and gain most of the weight back...I know at least 6-7 people in my circle of friends and coworkers who have done this.

I totally and completely agree that white breads, white rice, and plain potatoes can make your metabolism go bonkers and raise your blood sugar just as equally as a piece of cake can. BUT I also think that if one eats plenty of fruits, veggies, lean meats, & low-fat dairy products in the proper balance, that some rice or some toast with breakfast will do no harm. I also know that for me, and for a lot of people out there, if you are without a gall bladder, it is EXTREMELY hard to do a lo-carb type diet cause all the high protein and often higher fat meats/cheeses are difficult to digest. I also wonder that if one has a normal gall bladder and does the "no-no" version of Atkins (high fat) if it would increase one's risk of their gall-bladder going bad....I posted earlier on this thread that my urologist HIGHLY criticized lo-carb dieting of any kind because all the protein (lean or high fat) can wreak havok on your kidneys. He said he has had many cases where people have to get a TRANSPLANT because of extreme lo-carb dieting and that it just wrecked their kidneys. Maybe those people were already prone to kidney disease, but I thought that made sense and was scary!

Yeah, Alice, I agree. I knew many people who lost a lot of weight on Atkins the first few weeks...they restricted their carbs to something like 12 a day or something crazy like that. Anyway, they lost enormous amounts of weight only to have it pour back on when they tried to reintegrate carbs into their diet. Not only that, but they gained even more. Not to mention, while on the diet, many were horrors to be around...irritable and extremely tired all of the time.

But that seems to be extreme Atkins.
