Sick and Tired of Hearing About This Adkins/No-Carb Craze

These high calorie low nutrient foods do nothing but raise you blood sugar and then insulin levels which does nothing for you but make you hungrier

Either I have a racing metabolism or I am just a really strange one...
Because I eat a TON of this type of food and have never had a weight problem.

It just seems so strange to me that some can eat whatever and never gain. The researcher that solves that mystery will be a multimillionaire in a matter of minutes!

Another misconception about Atkins, it doesn't cause low blood sugar, it stabilizes your blood sugar. Many people experience low blood sugar when their sugar crashes due to a high intake of carbs.....but anyways. I eat low-carb for more reasons then weight loss. I have hypoglycemia and by limiting my carbs, I don't suffer from blood sugar drops. I have at times started Atkins Induction to jumpstart my weight loss. But for the most part, I do not eat bread, potatoes or rice. I allow myself the occasional junk food treat, but limit the portion. When I eat to many carbs, it makes me very cranky.

I'M THE ONE WHO'S CRANKY!! I didn't make it to Wendy's in time and am going to have to go to Krystal! Darn it! LisaF..I know you didn't quote my post.. I'm trying to figure out who did! And, yeah, I'm 5'11" but still weigh a tad too much. About 20 pounds off would do me.

The researchers figured that out centuries ago. It's called metabolism and everyone has one,

Some people can metabolize carbs with no problem at atll. People, here's the shock, are DIFFERENT. I actually ate just about NOTHING but carbs in my 20s and never gained a pound. Unfortunately that is not the case in my 40s.

My son has never been able to metabolize carbs. I've had him on low fat, low sugar and just plane old low calories, all to no avail. Under doctors restrictions or whatever, running 5 laps a day, nothing worked until we eliminated the carbs. It changed his life and I'm glad.

Those of us who have read the book see it from a different prospective. Even I didn't understand it until I did, and I was the biggest opponent of the Atkins lifestyle of anyone! Ignorance can do this, take time to to educate yourself in this before you make a snap judgement.

Those books will be in the 10 cent box in a garage sale here pretty soon when the fad fades..... maybe I'll pick up a copy then. Or maybe not. :)

ok Atkins is hardly a fad. It's been around for 30 years.

SECOND OF ALL... I am NOT able to eat anything I want, I am a size 14. If and when I decide to go on a diet, I will do it sensibly and not jump on the grapefruit and monkeybread diet just because God and everyone else is doing it.

THIRDLY...Miss LisaF... I wasn't implying that my lifestyle was healthy, nor did I EVER say that Atkins was UNHEALTHY. I could care less how anyone other than myself chooses to eat, exercise, lose weight, etc. I was making a joke about how I am the only one on my crew at work that isn't doing the low carb and how they all miss normal food when I eat it.

You know, low blood sugar can make you cranky.

No one cut and pasted your paragraph. It is called a quote button and I was the one who posted it offering a compliment. You are very pretty and look like you are in very good shape. I would have never assumed you for a 14 more like and 8. I am sorry if saying you looked good offended you.

Yes things do get taken out of context here.

Yes..but look at it...your comments are also in bold sandwiched in the middle of the quote of my thread...That is what threw me off..

Thanks.. I needed that. My husband merely grunts and heads for the toilet or workshop whenever he sees me indecently attired.

I'm tired of being criticized for the low carb lifestyle. Some of us aren't so lucky to eat whatever we want and maintain our weight. I used to be that lucky! LOL But not anymore :( The low carb lifestyle has been my saving grace. I lost 35 pounds last year on it, and am maintaing it. Sure, I occasionally eat the No-No foods, I don't believe in depriving yourself of everything, but for me it's basically a MAJOR change in my eatin habits. I'm making much better choices in my food selections. I feel better than I have in years. I'm in much better shape, have much more energy, and a much better self image. So please don't tell me that it's a horrible way to eat. It isn't. Our ancestors didn't sit around eating tons of sugar and carbs. Were they WRONG? I hardly think so.

If it works for you, great! However, I think many of our ancestors ate bread and potatoes with nearly every meal. I am a firm believer that any of the "none of this food group or none of that food group" diets are unhealthy. Different strokes, though.... if you are comfortable cutting something out of your diet and it gets you results, super. It's just not something I would do, nor recommend. :)

Aren't all these Atkin's dieters going to die of congestive heart failure in 20 years? Just seems to me that when you eat eggs, beef, cheese and pork all the time, it ain't that great for your heart.

Am I wrong?

Edited to add this -----> :D

I don't want anyone flaming me. I'm really just curious.

Yes, they did eat bread and potatoes, but their flour wasn't the sugared up versions that are on the shelves today.. big difference. I do eat breads, but I eat them sparingly, and choose multigrain breads that are high in fiber, and sugar free. No one comments on the diets that diabetics maintain. My father, who was diabetic, ate very similar to how I do now. Somehow that was considered Healthy, and now it isn't??? I don't eat all red meat. I eat a variety of meat and fish. I think some people on the diet get carried away and eat too much of the fat.. that's just nasty! LOL I think that these days, we eat a lot of foods together that just shouldn't be combined. Very heavy, sugary stuff.

I suppose that there are many people out there who do this, but I don't think it's healthy to eat mostly red meat! We try to eat a lot of chicken and fish too. Basically, we eat as we did before the low carb diet, but just take out all the "bad" carbs (i.e. sugar). I find that I don't eat as much as I used too because I'm just not as hungry anymore. :D

You might be wrong. In the absence of carbohydrates, the dietary fats are not converted to cholesterol. Carbohydrates stimulates the secretion of insulin. Insulin commands the liver to produce cholesterol. Eating fats and carbs together is what gets you into trouble.

This is what I found scary about that article:
The survey found that 47 percent them believed that low-carb diets can help them lose weight without cutting calories.
YIKES.

But really you can eat low-carb and have healthy fruits and vegetables. I only have issued will all the processed foods now claiming to be low-carb. They are not healthy, they are not good for you. Whole foods are the way to go. I have cut a lot of "bad" carbs out of my diet except for on occassion. I have substituted sweet potatoes for regular potatoes, brown rice for white rice, whole grain bread for white bread, etc. It's balanced eating not a fad. Those relying on processed food, or just eating bacon, red meat, eggs and cheese are buying into a fad.

Yep the low fat aproach really works HaHa. Havent' they been talling us that for 20 yrs while the nation continues to get fatter and fatter.

I noticed the article didn't offer stastics, studies or any other proof of what they said. Humm, wonder why (NOT, they would have to have the proof first)

Those relying on processed food, or just eating bacon, red meat, eggs and cheese are buying into a fad.
The fact is that no published diet (that I know of), Atkins included, rely on processed food or just eating the foods you listed. In induction the Atkins diet includes 3 cups of vegetables a day, and it goes up from there.

Couldn't agree more.

I haven't read the whole tread but I wanted to add my 2 cents... I really don't care what people eat that is up to you I just hope I am not paying for it in 10 or 20 years time when my health insurance is hiked up to cover the costs of all the additional heart surgery etc.

Just as long as you don't do anything that might potentially cause me to need to cover you, I guess we'll be okay! I am not even on the program, and I am offended at this comment.

Okay, Ash aka Sky, just as long as MY health insurance doesn't go up because we have to cover all the fatties who are eating themselves into an early grave. At least those on Atkins are trying which is more than I can say for a lot of the overweight people in this world.
