Shuttle or rental MCO-DTD

I'm really torn here not quite sure what to do. Basically I need to get from MCO to DTD on my night of arrival. I'm not staying on property, so DME is no option. To give you a short rundown:

  • I'll arrive at 8pm after about 18 hours of travel from Europe
  • I'll have a connecting flight in Charlotte, so I'll arrive at MCO on a domestic flight (no customs)
  • One Way shuttle varies between $20 and $22 (depending whether Super Shuttle or Mears)
  • I can get a special Heartz discount through my company which will bring a one day rental to 16€ or $22. I can return the car at a station in my hotel.
  • I need to decide by Sunday to get the Hertz discount.

Now.... shuttle and rental are basically the same, even if I factor in tip for shuttle driver and gas/toll for the car, so that wouldn't really be an issue. My main issue basically is - when getting into MCO I will have travelled for 18 hours, meaning I'll be up on my feet for about 20 hrs. I have never had an issue with being overly tired after a flight because I tend to sleep on the flight. However, everyone around here is making me paranoid - you don't want to drive after such a long flight, you'll be tired, there's crazy drivers in Orlando - don't do it!

I know I probably shouldn't listen to this because I know myself. i always get second wind when getting off the plane. My biggest concern taking a shuttle is - last time we flew to MCO, they made us wait almost an hour for a shuttle. I had never had to wait that long ever (about 95% of the time I fly to the US I take Super Shuttle, that's about 4 or 5 times a year!). Is that normal at MCO? From arrival, grabbing bags to actually getting to the hotel it took us 3 hrs! Mind you, grabbing bags was done in about 20-30mins, but the rest was waiting for the shuttle for an hour, and then we were the last ones to be dropped off!

While I have driven pretty much everywhere in the US (including in Manhattan during rush hour which I've been told I was damn crazy to do!), I have never actually had the need to drive in Florida. So I'm not familiar with the craziness that's about to happen. It'll probably have died down when I get in though, right?

I think I probably worry way too much over all this and should just get the car and be done with it, right?

5 minutes after I made this lengthy post asking for help here, there came the no-brainer via Hertz email notification - Hertz dropped the rate from 16€ to 12.50€ :lmao: I am so getting a rental car!

Now I can also go grocery shopping at Publix instead of Walgreens

Driving from MCO to Disney is not crazy-you'll be fine. I take the 417 Greeneway out the south exit of the airport and get off at exit 6. $2.50 or so in tolls. Takes no time at all.

I would suggest joining whatever loyalty program Hertz has so you can avoid the rental counter and just pick up your car when you get there. I have been able to pick up a car and drive to Disney in 30 minutes or less (without speeding)

Wow, that's a great idea! I have to look into that. Not sure it'll work for international peeps though as I have no US driver's licence.... don't they scan those kiosks? Or do you bypass the kiosk all togther with the loyalty program? Must investigate!

ETA: Thanks again for the info! Signed up, added the info to my res and now have the option of online check-in which lets me put in my driver's licence info. It also adviced me to sign up for email updates to my smartphone to let me know which car has been reserved for me. I haven't fully completed online check-in yet as I still have a while a while to go but it looks like this might allow me to skip lines. Whoo hooo! Things you learn on these boards!

I have never found the driving to be unusual around Orlando, and it should be quiet when you get there. 417 is the way to go.
