Russell Brown is one of the creative geniuses at Adobe, and a real fun guy to learn from. His technique for B&W conversion gives great control and is easy to use but for some reason it is not at RussellBrown.com (although a lot of other cool stuff is).

No problem, here it is:

Very nice, 0bli0. I especially like the first one (what are those called?) and the bikes.

Carol,

they are little bamboo ladles. i'm not sure what their name is. basically before going into a shrine, there is a washing ritual that worshippers do - the water in the 'well' is 'sacred'. they use the right hand to rinse the left, then use the left hand to rinse the right. then they sip the water and return the ladle where they got it.

sometimes there is a big pot/urn with incense and they'll stand and take in the smoke. there is often a bell and a rope and you can make a donation and ring the bell to the gods.

here is one from last year

I was in Kyoto for two weeks during March and their Hana Touro celebration. (light and flower festival) words can not explain the light evffect and laterns in the old district, and me stuck with my little Kodak. No SLR for me. I found it easier to enjoy myself and try to find a book later with pro photos! lol Some of the temples are beyond words, and the Geisha....beautiful!

I'm taking photography in college. Let me know what you think.

I am going to try to post a picture. I've never done this so who knows what will come up.

These are really good! :thumbsup2 What kind of equipment did you use? Did you shoot in b/w or change it with software? I also think I should take a class... I need to remember to look for one near me.

Now how did you get the shot of the Day Lily? (i.e. how did you hide everything else? How did you get such good lighting?)

They are all film, Kodak t-max 100, hand devloped film and prints. I have a Nikon 4004, and a nikon 6006. My Father raised a nikon nut.

The day lily was shot in my neighbors front yard in the morning. There is a large bush in back of it. I just croped it real close. I did cut the lily out in photoshop and mess with the backround, just to cover dome dust spots from my scanner.

I'm glad you like them. I got a B on those in my class. Look at your local junior or city college. That's where I'm going. And Thank you. :artist:

Ooh... very nice, Goofyish. I especially like the first two.... very sharp. What kind of equipment do you use? Did you use a filter? Did you take these in b/w mode or did you change it via software?

I photos were taken with my old Canon G1, no filters. They were originally in colour and then changed to monochrome in Photoshop (Using channel mixer).

I posted the first two under the digital pictures thread, also. I'm kind of new to the photography world and I'm curious to know what you think. They were all taken in color and then changed to B&W with photo editing software on the computer.
