Should we cancel or not???

I'm afraid there is something behind Jeanne. Tropical depression forming near the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's west coast.

and I thought that we were nuts cancelling school for today and tomorrow by the time the news came on at 5PM yesterday. I was at Publix yesterday morning at 9 to pick up a few things that I had forgotten the day before and it was nuts! I went ahead and bought another loaf of bread, it was almost entirely gone off the shelf. Hopefully they just hadn't restocked yet. Bottled water was almost gone, they had D cell batteries gut no flashlights at all. DH spent all day yesterday trying to get our generator working (we have had it for 5 years and have never had to use it). We bought it when we had salt water aquariums. I have to admit that it was nice not ahving to get out in this rain and wind this morning to take DD's to school but I know that they'll have two more days to make up now. They cancelled here last Tuesday due to power outages, that day is going to be made up on a FRIDAY planning day we had in MARCH! :( That could have been a nice little three day weekend at the parks! There is a tornado warning and watch out for here now, I think that Montgomery and Birmongham are supposed to get worse weather than us. We lived in South Alabama when Hurricane Opal came in (Oct. 4, 1995). The damage there was less than they had here in Columbus GA, 100 miles north of there. Everyone just pray that I don't lose power and find myselk shut up in the house with to whining kids and a psycho dog  If I have to I'll run the generator just so they can watch movies (Disney of course, getting ready for our trip in less than three weeks):teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

In Birmingham now. Ivan is here and let me tell you those people who cancelled schools are NOT nuts. It is starting to get bad here, and we have tress coming down. I hope you folks in TN don't get flooded, but please don't criticize our authorities for making some tough decisions which are keeping thousands of people safe. It really is very bad all over our part of the state.

As for Jeanne, we're going to Orlando if we can get out of town here on Sun. We can always turn around and come home.

I'm not in Tennessee, I'm in North Alabama (Huntsville) and there was no reason for our kids to stay home from school today.

Tomorrow maybe, but not today.

It is very interesting to read all these posts and see that although we live in the same country and observe the same hurricanes that there are so many varying views of what kind of threat these Hurricanes pose.

I wonder what the statistical odds are of getting hurt or killed during a hurricane. If 15 people died as a result of the storm last night and another 30 were injured, and the population in the track of the storm was 300,000 (very conservative) then that means you have a .015% chance of being injured or killed by this hurricane. I have a greater chance of getting killed or injured in traffic every day on my way to work (of course I live in Houston so the risk is probably higher than most parts of the country).

I'm not diminishing how terrible it is when someone loses their life when lightning or a tornado or a hurricane strikes, not saying that you shouldn't move to higher ground if you are in a surge or flood path, or move to a reinforced building if you live in a substandard structure - but how much should we be allowing these events to influence our decisions? Do you never go outside during a storm because you might be hit by lightning? I know some folks are going to go through the roof when they read this, but I'm just wondering where we draw the line between a healthy respect for something and panic.

I see the post about where the "red line" is aimed when this hurricane is so far out. Ivan's "red line" was aimed at Key West last week and it was supposed to hit on Sunday - just pointing out how unreliable those forecasts are.

I've lived on the Gulf Coast for 30 years, and have seen many hurricanes. I have a healthy respect for them, but I guess I know how unpredictable they are and realize you can't have a "Storm of the Century" (imagine a stern reporter's voice if you will) every time one of these comes through.

If folks cancelled their vacation this week because of Ivan and are going next week they may be facing Jeanne. If they cancel because of Jeanne, then what about the "K" and "L" storm that will be brewing after that. That's pretty much my observation. I'll get my coat of armor out now ;)

I am also guilty of watching the Weather Channel or Foxnews or CNN all day just for a little information on these hurricanes. I live in Atlanta and schools are closing down all around here.

With that said we are going to WDW on Saturday if we can get the car out of the driveway!! I can not give up my vacation (that I have planned for a year) on a maybe. Maybe Jeanne will veer straight into Orlando and we are stuck in the hotel room for 3 days with no power, or maybe she will go straight out to sea never to be heard from again.(hope)

We will hope for the best and just enjoy our trip, however it turns out.

I do think that the parks will be deserted because of all the people cancelling.
More Mickey for me!!

:jester: Eisner is behind all of these storms. He is upset that he will be stepping down in 2006 & doesn't want to see Diseny make money. He is forming these storms so we all cancel & Disney has less of a profit. ::yes:: :jester:
Just joking but it is nice to blame someone... I do have to agree that these Weather Channel people are getting on my nerves big time now. There is this one that is on late at night & it seems that evey other word is "my friend". "This one is a killer my friend" or "My friend, this one will cause major destruction & loss of life".... he ain't no ones friend when he is talking like that!!! :jester: It is almost as if he is enjoying scaring the you know whats out of everyone.... I would rather check online than listen... but I have to admit, I have had it on at night & that is how I heard this nut.... "my friend"

We are scheduled to leave Friday, the 17th and were supposed to be at DW through the 24th. We are soooo excited...our first trip to DW. But, Im so bummed. The weather channel says to expect rain the entire week. I know it rains alot in FL this time of year and I can handle a couple days of rain but not sure about a whole week! Are most rides indoors??? Now with the new storm, Jeanne, we're thinking maybe we should reschedule to leave on the 25th. The kids will be so dissappointed but I sure was hoping for a dry vacation. What do yall think? Thanks!

I say go for it!!! You might be wet and soggy, but you will still have fun. And the parks will be so NOT crowded. You can have wet weather anytime. And kids don't care if they are wet.

We went in December for the 1st time a couple of years ago. Historically not a particularly rainy week. Well it poured almost every day. There was one dry day all week. On the worst day we were at MGM, we had on ponchos and rain coats and were soaked. It was raining so hard that the storm drains couldn't keep up, so you would step off the curb and be in puddles up to your ankles. Soggy socks and sneakers. The suggestion about the waterproof sandals is a good one. We just got so silly about the whole thing...what else could you do. We still had a great trip.

If it looks ok..I say for it...We just got back from our trip, though cut short due to Frances (we had to change our flights two times to finally get down there with the airport closed) we had a wonderful time. Few people were there and everything was a walk on...We did not even really get rain Sept 7-12th, a few short showers when we were in shows anyway and just one day did we have to use the umbrellas and ponchos for maybe 20 minutes. I say go for it..just be mindful of the weather is all....:sunny:

Actually, the local channels are predicting less rain than normal next week. Hurricanes tend to suck up the moisture from adjacent areas. Most days next week, the chance of rain is below 50 percent. Of course, should Jeanne change course, that would be a whole different story.

So we watch and wait. Which of the forecasts are right?? Wrong??
A gigantic guessing match. They guess where the rain/storms/hurricanes will go, and we then have to guess if they have it right or not. Unfortunately, in such a match, we can't afford to guess wrong, so most folks will make plans based on the worst case scenario.

We faired IVAN pretty well. Just lost some limbs on some trees that I wish would go anyway (just not on the house). We lost power off and on all night. Finally got it back on for good about 2am.

We do have a minor roof leak that we'll have to have looked at, but other than that everything is fine. School is back on today. Our canoeing trip is cancelled cause they are expecting enough rain to make the river too high to canoe safely.

However, we leave for WDW one week from today, so I'm going to spend this weekend PACKING!!!

We went to WDW for the first time in July, the weather also predicted continuous rain for that week.
Even if they are expecting a shower every day, as we got, they forecast rain and thats it. We awoke every morning to glorious weather and had a storm in the afternoon most days but not all.
The thunderstorms are amazing, and just as exciting as some of the rides.
My advise
Buy some poncho's.
Take trainers you can tumble dry.
Take a small umbrella - this is perfect if it is hot to keep the sun off you if you find yourself queing in the sun, plus it will keep you dry in the rain.
DWD is amazing rain or shine, so just enjoy it.
Please don't let a little bit of water spoil it for you
Have a great time:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc princess:

We're leaving tomorrow at 10:30 to fly into Orlando. Jeanne or no Jeanne were coming with ponchos in hand. Can't expect to come to Florida in Sept without afternoon rain.

Now if I can just make it thru work today I'm set.

:smooth: :jester:
