Should we buy Vero Beach?

Hi.

Just reserved a beach cottage for Feb 2004. Feel very lucky to get it! I figure it will be a great introduction to Vero Beach.

There seems to be a great divide on the board about VB... People either like it or they don't....

I was a silent sceptic up until three years ago... My DW, DS, and I went for 4 days and fell in love with the place...

We've since bought two add-ons there... One two years ago for 55 points, and then again just recently for another 60...

I'm with PamOKW... The place isn't for everybody, but there will always be a few of us who will enjoy the 11 month booking window... ;)

Imho comparing VB and HH to other DVC Resorts is apples to oranges. What is meant by sub par location or VB having many shortcomings? Is it because it is not next to WDW or a major airport? Or that you need a car? The area certainly isn't sub par. It is natural. Not much of that left nowadays. There were many locals in the area that did not want to see this place built. They were worried what Disney tourists would do to Orchid Island (where the resort is). Some still don't like it being there. Most have accepted it. And a number of them take advantage of it, which can be either good or bad. Disney took a gamble and jumped through many hoops to get "our" resort built. Much of the vegetation had to be temporarily moved then replaced. Many environmental issues had to be overcome.

The resort was not meant from the get go as an extension of WDW or some artificial tourist destination. It was not meant to be built on Daytona or Miami Beach. Or having the character caravan running all over the place 24hrs a day. The Shipwreck history theme you see at the resort is very real. Not made up by Imagineers. The Sea Turtle nesting area is real. This strip of land is the 2nd largest nesting site in the Americas. The area borders a National Wildlife Refuge. The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. The dune line is real. The waves and erosion are real. The manatees are real, not to mention other marine animals. The land crabs are real and yes even the dune mice and noseeums are real. The list goes on. Is this where Disney made a mistake? Did they think WDW guests would go crazy over an Ocean Resort with Disney's name on it? They were wrong to some extent. It appears that many people want Disney convenience and Fantasyland. Some want small improvements, but overall love it just the way it is. :) That is what makes DVC great. Different resorts for those with different wants and opinions,Just don't talk about our VB!

MADCOCO-
Thank you for putting into words what I truely love about Vero-It is the essence of its environment, with a touch of Disney Magic! The natural beauty of it is what endears it to those of us who feel so strongly about VB.

I know that at HH Disney was also subjected to and very mindful of strict regulations concerning the environment. That is just what makes HH so great too! I love the marshes and the old trees-some over 100yrs. old.

The only thing you didn't mention re: Vero is the Orange Grove influence. I think they do try to offer something to the community by having catered events such as weddings, and by also providing alot of information on local establishments, such as restaurants and delis as well as movie theatres and malls.

It's true that what some people like about VB, others don't. The things I see that some people don't like are the beach, the isolation and he higher dues. These issues have affected sales. We love the resort but only every few years and I think many people look at it that way.
