Should I buy another contract??

We currently have a 160 point contract at AKL. We go every year and 160 points works fine for us. Last summer my wife's family went with us but we stayed at AoA and didn't use our points. We are going by ourselves this year and next year my family is going with us. We hope that every other year that one of our families will go with us.

I found an AKL contract that has the same month as mine that has some points that I could rent out this year and have them for our family next year. Should we buy another contract or just try and rent some AKL points when we need them?

I personally would not buy another contract with the intention of renting out points every other year. Do you know for a fact that your family will join you every other year? Do they prefer the villas to AoA? You're putting a lot of money in now and annual dues for the next 30+ years.

An alternative is to get a transfer. If you get the same resort and UY, you can book online. If it's a different UY and/or resort, you have to call in to MS. It gives you a bit more flexibility than renting from someone else.

I would buy the same UY at your second favorite resort. You can use those points every other year for guests and/or for you.
