They carry nightsticks. If a situation comes up where firepower is present or is needed, they have that capability, as well as special units (think: SWAT teams) trained to deal with that type of situation.

There's a reason their crime rate is considerably lower than ours. What, are Americans just more violent as a group ?

Hell no....I'm sorry but the 2nd Amendment guarantees me my right to have a gun (and I'm quite a good shot.) If we let that Amendment go by the wayside, which one will the politicians take from us next and how will we stop them?

Uh, maybe this one?

Article [IV.]
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

No but our country is vastly larger, and we have more people. I would like to see the stats in percentages. Those little numbers looked nice, but I would like to see what the percentages vs ours are.

Does anyone honestly think that by banning guns people aren't going to have them. Guarantee you would see a huge black market on them just like there is for illegal narcotics.

Crack is banned in the US . Geez, not many people get there hands on that.

:rotfl:

I'm assuming you're joking, simply because it's pretty clear that the Amendment you're referencing is already under attack by such nonsense as the "Patriot" Act (nauseating term for something so very unpatriotic).

I am curious if perhaps England doesn't have the horrific DRUG problems we have in the U.S.?

Hmm....I asked because they tried "non-lethal" force during a riot in Boston last year and it killed someone. But, it wasn't a head-beating. :)

Should all guns be outlawed? No. Should some guns be outlawed? Yes. Assault weapons, and fully automatic weapons should be banned. Handguns? No. I own handguns, rifles, shotguns, and antique weapons. I hunt with the handguns as well as the rifles and shotguns. I got a 8 point buck two years ago with my Blackhawk .44 single shot (a handgun) with a scope mounted on it. A large number of my family owns guns, they have for numerous generations. We have managed to not kill anyone in the family and a large reason for that is because we have lived with them and been taught about them since we were very young. We lock our weapons up. We teach our children they are not toys. If you want to ban them talk to your legislators and get the ball rolling. I personally am not worried that they will be banned in my lifetime. Every person in my immdiate family knows how to use a gun and to safely unload, and store a gun. They also are pretty good shots and if you attempt to take said gun from them in order to assault or otherwise harm them, you better be careful because they will not hesitate to use it. I do not agree with the NRA that all guns should be legal, but am a member because the gun range I belong to requires it. I agree with legislators who think certain types of guns should be banned but strongly disagree with them when they say that one of the guns that should be banned is my 12 gauge Remington pump because it holds three shell at once. Fever pitch has people so strung out on the issue that common sense cannot work out the comprimise in the middle.

That, of course, is an inherent risk.

Yes - what I would like to see - and it would take some time - but is to remove handguns from the market period. I would like gun makers to quit making them. I would like gun dealers (legal ones) to return their supplies. I would like to see them destroyed. And as criminals are brought in and their guns are collected I would like to see them be destroyed. It would take a while to clean up the mess - but eventually we would get to where hand guns are not the norm. I would like them to quit producing bullets so that the weapon becomes useless to some degree.

If I had the time to do a little more research, I'd give them to you. The stats I posted were easily located. Just do a google search using terms like "homicide", "firearm", "handgun"...you get the idea. I haven't found two comparable years for UK vs. US stats. But just looking at the numbers, it's pretty easy to see that their percentage is going to be significantly lower than ours.

I found some good things on the UN's website, but haven't had a chance to really read through them. Might be worth taking a look at.

I think, sadly, that will remain a dream until your nation has its Dunblane :(

It would take about 5 minutes for a factory about 2 miles into mexico to start making guns and they would become the new contraband coming into this country. We do such a pitiful job with illegal immigrants and drugs you know we wouldn't catch 10% of them. So you would have cheap dangerous weapons in the hands of criminals, smugglers and would have defenselss citizens with no recourse against them.

I think so. I chalk it up to violence in the media and the drug problems. Guns have always been around in the US. But crime increases. Not due to legal gun ownership, IMO.

We already had it...and two weeks later, the nation's largest gun rights lobbying group held it's national convention less than a hundred miles away.

Unfortunately, I think you're vastly overestimating the ability of the American public to learn anything from that kind of tragedy.
