Should guns get banned?

It really doesn't get much easier than pulling a trigger...
Have you ever fired a gun? Pulling a trigger may be easy (depending on the gun) but hitting your intended target, ummm not always so easy.

Hell no....I'm sorry but the 2nd Amendment guarantees me my right to have a gun (and I'm quite a good shot.) If we let that Amendment go by the wayside, which one will the politicians take from us next and how will we stop them?

Are you in a militia?

As a marksmanship tutor (http://www.southernsyndicate.org.uk :) ) I can tell you that firing a weapon is incredibly easy - accuracy to within 3mm in 25 yards is the hard bit.

Quote from WVREVY: You are nearly twice as likely to die by a gun either in an accidental shooting or by turning the gun on yourself than you are to be killed via homicide.

Actually, no, I am not...I know that for ME PERSONALLY, I have ZERO PERCENT chance of killing myself.

Concealed under trench coats! Maybe we need to ban trenchcoats. ;)

Actually it was more the rifles for Columbine:

Dylan -- Intratec TEC-DC-9 (9-mm semi-automatic handgun) attached to a strap slung over his shoulder (under coat), Stevens 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun (barrel sawed down to approximately 23 inches, initially half-hidden in Dylan's cargos).

Eric -- 10-shot Hi-Point model 995 carbine rifle on a strap (under coat), Savage-Springfield 12-gauge pump shotgun he called 'Arlene' (named after a Doom character - initially in one of the duffels carried to the top of the grassy knoll -- stock and barrel sawed off, reducing the entire gun to 26 inches).

The sawed-off weapons were so short that firing repeatedly from them caused their hands to bleed on the practice range initially. They apparently acclimitized to the weapons over the months preceding the shootings. Both gunmen also carried several knives, but they did not use them on April 20.

The shooters named their pipe bombs. Four bombs are mentioned on Eric's website, along with their specs. 'Vengeance' (pictured at bottom) and 'Atlanta' were found at the Klebold residence when police searched it.

I feel that guns should be banned but if they aren't going to ban guns then I think, in reference to kids shooting others, the parents/guardians/kid should be held responsible and accountable for how the kid got the gun and then it should be taken from there. If the kid got the gun because the parent/guardian didn't lock it up properly, then the parent/guardian should be held partially responsible.

In 2002, there were 30,242 gun deaths in the U.S:

* 17,108 suicides (56% of all U.S gun deaths),
* 11,829 homicides (39% of all U.S gun deaths),
* 762 unintentional shootings (3% of all U.S gun deaths),
* and 300 from legal intervention and 243 from undetermined intent (2% of all U.S gun deaths combined).

Read that again.

You are nearly twice as likely to die by a gun either in an accidental shooting or by turning the gun on yourself than you are to be killed via homicide. All the crap about "only the criminals will have guns" is just that: crap.

Here's another FACT for ya': While handguns account for only one-third of all firearms owned in the United States, they account for more than two-thirds of all firearm-related deaths each year. A gun in the home is 4 times more likely to be involved in an unintentional shooting, 7 times more likely to be used to commit a criminal assault or homicide, and 11 times more likely to be used to attempt or commit suicide than to be used in self-defense.

And another: A gun in the home increases the risk of homicide of a household member by 3 times and the risk of suicide by 5 times compared to homes where no gun is present.

And another: Comparison of U.S. gun homicides to other industrialized countries:
In 1998 (the most recent year for which this data has been compiled), handguns murdered:

* 373 people in Germany
* 151 people in Canada
* 57 people in Australia
* 19 people in Japan
* 54 people in England and Wales, and
* 11,789 people in the United States

And another: More Americans were killed with guns in the 18-year period between 1979 and 1997 (651,697), than were killed in battle in all wars since 1775 (650,858).

Rant and rave about how much you like guns all you want. The FACTS are not on your side in this argument.
Thank you for those FACTS about handguns.

I'm with wvrevy - there is no need for handguns at all. They should be banned from being sold or manufactured except for those required to carry one like police. I have no problems with hunting rifles, but I cannot fathom people owning a handgun and would not let a child of mine go play at a house where a handgun is present.

Okay... so if all the handguns are banned and the world is so much safer because of it... why do the police still need theirs?

This has been a very emotional issue for many years and will continue as such, no matter what. I've owned handguns for close to 40 years and am not about to change now.

Love the sig by the way :)

Homicides in Europe and the USA are comparable overall according to Interpol; neither is runaway.

Um...Better check again, Rich. According to the statistics on the government's homepage, there were a grand total of 853 deaths listed as "homicides" in England and Wales for 2002 / 2003. I would hardly call that "comparable".

Because as someone already stated there are more ways then just guns to murder someone. Let me ask you - you are in a convience store and a guy comes up behind you and presses a knife to your throat and you are now his hostage. Wouldn't you want the police to be able to shoot this guy from afar in the head? Thereby saving your life? Police officers need guns to do what they are there for - Serve and Protect.

Does anyone here who is FOR the banning of all guns, have a plan as to how we would get the guns away from criminals? They aren't going to walk into the police station and hand them in. And as long as they have THEIR GUNS, I want MINE.

Oh, and would legal gun owners be compensated for the guns? They are quite expensive.

I agree with Chris Rock, don't ban guns just mark up the price on ammo. Charge something ridiculous like $50 a bullet.

Because police occassionally do need an advantage in dealing with an unruly criminal (one who won't go quietly, in other words). However, police in many of the countries that have had the good sense to actually ban handguns don't routinely carry them.

No, what if they shoot me by accident! Police shouldnt have guns either!

I must add that the UK has banned firearms and hasn't yet plummeted into depths of anarchy :)

Well... no more than usual ;)
