Should Folks staying in a 1Br+ DVC get free access to laundry facilities?

Is the hallway laundry facilities in a DVC resort only free for those in a studio?

  • Yes, those laundry rooms are for studio folks only

  • No, all DVC members should get free access

Folks staying in a studio can use multiple machines at once, correct?
So why not somebody staying in a 1br who is paying more per night, and likely has more occupants?

Unless the machine in a 1 bedroom + is not working, I don't think the common laundry rooms should be used by anyone other than those in a studio. There are a limited supply.

I agree..that laundry room...and it is small..is for the entire Grand Californian, isn't it? They didn't build a new laundry room for the DVC area did they?

Where does it state this in DVC rules?
I am glad we usually stay at BWV where tokens are not required. We have only used the common facilities once in 10 years. But I pay $5000+ in dues and I don't expect any hassle if I need to use the common laundry facilities for some reason.

I don't believe the laundry room is paid for by our dues if it's the one I'm thinking of..it is in the Hotel section and was there long before DVC..I am guessing that since the villas don't have their own laundry room this is a perk to DVC members staying in studios to get tokens and not have to pay for it.

I confess that it wouldn't even occur to me to go there if I had my own machines in-unit. Though, honestly, I'd probably rather wait than schlep/babysit.

That's my feeling as well. I'd probably just hang a few things in the laundry inside the villa if they didn't all fit in the machine at one time. I HATE using the public ones. It's one of the reasons we always get a 1 bedroom for the two of us.

It's true that everyone is paying dues to cover all of the machines but studio dwellers do not have access to the machines inside the 1 & 2 BRs so they're at a disadvantage and should not have to wait in line behind someone who has a machine in their room.

BUT...I would also think it would be silly to have a hard and fast rule that when someone like OP is in need and no one else is using them...that they can't use them. Rules like that are silly.

So, it really just comes down to courtesy. Common courtesy goes a long way in making life easier.

I love the idea of tokens, so wish WDW would do that, so that freeloaders, not DVC members at all, would stop using them.

Why does Disneyland do all the right stuff as far as guests are concerned. :confused3

As to the question, not sure whether it should be studios only but if I had a washer/dryer in my room can't imagine any reason to go to the laundry.

I think they do it at VGC because the laundry area is right near the pool, anyone could use them easily, including regular hotel guests. They are at least 10x as many hotel rooms than DVC units at VGC. At the other mixed use resorts, the DVC laundry room is in the DVC section. The problem with using tokens is you would have to keep running to the front desk to get them.

What he said. I have a washer and dryer in my villa. That's the one my dues are paying for. Otherwise, you should be able to knock on your neighbor's door and ask to use their washer and dryer.

Are your dues paying for it or are are your points/cash paying for it?

The laundry facility I used at VGC is near the DVC wing on the 1st floor, but I assume it was there before the wing was built.

How (or if) our dues pay for part of this facility I don't know. But I assume there must be a split of all common element costs (like pools, front desk, housekeeping) between DVD and Disney Parks and Resorts subsidiaries.

I didn't vote in the poll because it's pretty obvious that the laundry room for VGC is not separated from the hotel's public laundry room. So guests staying in a cash room at the hotel and the studio guests at VGC use the same machines. Because of this, it seems prudent that only the studio guests would use the laundry on a free basis.

But as far as I can remember the laundry rooms at DVC resorts at WDW do not have posted signs stating for use of studio villa guests only. To me it's reasonable to think that from time to time a guest would need to use the laundry facilities. I keep thinking about doing laundry for 8 or 12 people, that would take awhile with only one washer and dryer (especially the stackable kind).

I do laundry at WDW like I clean my kitchen - I clean as I go. I don't wait until everything is dirty. I might run a load each day or two each day and they might be smaller (so I use the smaller load features on the washer and dryer). I don't save it all up and try to do it in multiple loads on one day. But I would do that if I were staying in a studio.

I agree, there is a very limited supply.

I'm a "laundry room for studios" kind of gal, but I find the high level of disagreement illuminating. It make me think there are good reasons on both sides!

But since we're the wasteful "one bedroom for two people" types, I'm happy any way. As long as my studio neighbor doesn't try to come in and use my laundry, that is. :)

The laundry facility I used at VGC is near the DVC wing on the 1st floor, but I assume it was there before the wing was built.

That whole wing was built at the time that the Villas were added. The laundry was built for DVC (and maybe that wing of the hotel) and the main hotel laundry itself is over in the "old" section.

AFAIK the laundy is free for use to any DVC member.

As far who pays for it in dues all the dues will have a tiny portion that pays for that common laundry room - just like all common areas. There is no break out for studios only paying those dues as that isn't possible.

The washer/dryer in the units are paid for in the increase in points for those rooms - so yes, via dues but not directly like the common areas.

I love having a washer/dryer in the 1 and 2BR's and would not go to the laundry room but I do not think there is any grounds for restricting the use to a DVC owner staying on points.

Im sorry, but, I also voted for the studio due to my own experience. Last September, I was washing our clothes and 3 minutes before my load was done this woman came in with 2 loads of clean laundry and took up the only 2 dryers in the laundry room. When I told her that I was about to use one of the dryers, she told me she had to use them since they were driving home that day and she already had clothes in the dryer of her villa :confused3 I stood there in shock and just told her that she was the reason why the world was they way it was, lots of self entitlement and selfishness. Unbelievable!

So... Should DVC police the laundry room to ensure studio guests are only using one machine at a time??

MG

I think the laundry should be free for any DVC member staying on points. There could be many valid reasons why a person with a washer/dryer in the unit may need to use the machines in the laundry room.

I'd vote for; free for everyone in studios and 2 bedrooms. Because a 2 Bedroom is comprised of a 1 bedroom and a studio. So to have 9 people be expected to use 1 machine is a little unrealistic. ;)

The part about studio folks using more than one machine at once, has made me want to change my vote. I didn't even think of that since I would not have enough laundry to need to use more than one machine at a time.

There's a laundry area by the pool ? OK..must be a new one, because the one I'm thinking of is on the second floor..where is this??
