Inspired by what JimmyV has defined as "Disney's Coaster Phobia!!" I was sad that the thread was closed because it was a great thought provoking discussion with a lot of interesting opinions!! I was completely against it at first but then warmed up when some really creative Diser's came up with cool ideas for themes and some very unique coasters like Cheetah Hunt!!

A hypercoaster or megacoaster according to Intamin can mean one of two things:

Any continuous-circuit roller coaster with a height or drop measuring greater than 200 feet.

Or, more narrowly:

  • A style or model of roller coaster with three features:[3][4][5][6]
  • A height of 200-299 feet or 61-91 meters
  • Lacks inverting elements
  • A full circuit coaster with a lift hill, not a launch

Let's face it....these steel monstrosities are giant and ugly----- and they're too large to hide in a "mountain." They will destroy views and sightlines. But they are relatively cheap and quick to build!! The new Ratatouille ride in Paris is costing Disney $150,000,000 DOLLARS. Disney could build seven megacoasters for less!!!! Should Disney even consider a megacoaster when their main competitor Universal is veering away from coasters and copying off of Disney's formula of building well themed family thrill rides????? :confused3 Universal is rumored to have said that Gringott's Bank Vault Ride is not an indoor rollercoaster!! I wouldn't mind a couple of megacoasters in the secondary parks........but- I don't think Disney will ever build one.

Personally I would love a coaster but it just doesn't fit the Disney theming.

At California Adventure next to Disneyland they have a coaster called California screaming and its just a big metal coaster with a weaving line. No theming no Disney tie in, nothing.

Its a great ride but it just doesn't fit.

To me this coaster is a basic coaster not a mega/hypercoaster and I couldn't see it at Disney as it would be as tall if not taller then the "theme" item" at what ever park you put it in. By theme item I mean the Castle, Tree of Life etc.

I say no. I would much rather they sink the money into imaginative new ride experiences. As someone who has lived an hour from a Six Flags all my life, I love insane MEga Coasters, but have never felt they were too creative. Every season build one a little bigger, a little faster with a bigger loop, rinse and repeat. It's cool and all but not very imaginative. let the imagineers put their minds to Disney related fun that can be used by more than adults/teens.

I thought California Screaming was cool at first-----just from the pictures because I like classic wooden coasters....but when I found out it was made of steel....I was so disappointed. It is very pretty at night with all of the lights though!! California Screaming does not fit the profile of a hyper or mega coaster......it's too small and has an inversion. I would not want to see something like California Screaming at WDW but I am open to a true modern thrilling state of the art megacoaster!! :)

You've made a very good point!!!! This is very true.....every year Cedar Point and the other amusement parks have to throw up a new coaster that breaks some record because people get bored with them quickly and eventually outgrow megacoasters!! And- I completely agree that they are not very imaginative!!

What about a coaster that goes from park to park? MK to Epcot to HWS to AK to MK...

You could keep riding or get off at any park as it has a slow loading zone at each park...

This would be the ultimate monorail lol.

I know California Screaming is not a mega as they are really long like 3/4-1 mile long(started reading about them after posting here).

I will give you it is a beautiful at night and also wooden coasters are something special. Went on Colossal at Six Flags as a kid.

It is a wooden coaster not a mega and it has something special about it with its click clack sound and feel. I cannot explain it as its something you have to feel to believe.

I don't think many mega's built today would go with wood as steel is probally cheaper in the long term investment world.

Maybe Disney will open a 5th park at the world and do mega coasters based on their movies with some theming. This way the original integrity of the other parks remain pure.

Yes yes yes!!!! The "click clack" sound and feel and the ruggedness is exactly what I love about wooden coasters.....steel coasters can't give you that!! The only steel coaster that comes close and not in a good way is Space Mountain. I've always wanted to go to Magic Mountain!!!! Colossus looks very cool......this is the Walley World coaster!!!! That's on my bucket list.

I don't think Disney will build a 5th gate anytime soon but- I like the idea of a Disney thrill ride park ---- full of mega coasters and simulator rides like Universal. I do have to question if Disney could really compete with the other amusement parks that specialize in thrill rides-----I don't believe so.

Another thing I just thought about is noise!! Huge megacoasters make a lot of earth shattering noise and you can feel the ground rumbling underneath you. This doesn't happen at Disney World ----- Disney's parks are pretty quiet with great theme music.

Yes (but not one about 7 :) )
Not at MK. I would love to see some added at DHS/AK.
One like Cheetah would be suitable for AK.
I would love a range of villians coasters at DHS and then a more family friendly Pixar area with a coaster of similar level of the mountains based on the doors scene from Monsters inc.

No. A megacoaster's giant hunk of steel would detract from the theming.

I love big coasters, but I agree that they don't fit with Disney themeing.
I would like to see some more thrilling rides, but that doesn't have to mean a megacoaster.
Revenge of the Mummy at Universal is a great example that shows you can build a really thrilling ride without building a big towering coaster.

I agree with no. I like big coasters too, but they're ugly. Disney seems to be pretty successful with the tamer/well-themed thrill rides.

I vote other. I love coasters, but I agree, one this magnitude wouldn't fit Disney theming. I'd much prefer they put the money into making Fantasyland what it should be - A land on par with Disneyland's version.

I don't know why people say they are ugly. It's 2014. Some of these coasters are sights to see. The Hulk is a massive looking coaster and fits the theme of Marvel Super Hero Island perfectly. Manta and Kraken at Sea World as well.

I read when EE was being built that there was height restriction due to air traffic or something. Can't remember, but Disney could not build higher than 200 ft. EE is 199 ft. So, if this is true, there is no possibility of a higher coaster being built at Disney. And I'm glad, since I agree that it does not fit in with what Disney is all about. (Although I would love it if, after that first climb up EE it went straight down instead of just curving around.) When I want thrill rides, I go to Cedar Point. When I want immersed in detail and story, I go to Disney. Two different entities in my opinion. Thanks for the post!

Aesthetic differences. When I look at The Hulk all I see is a mess of green steel, with Manta a hunk of blue. I don't see any sort of theme, whereas you do.

I voted yes - but would like a separate park devoted to large coasters etc. I'm sure they could do one along the lines of a Marvel theme. I love Disney and the theming of the four parks but think they are missing a trick with the lack of thrill rides etc.

I voted no. If they built it, I would ride it---I'm a coaster junky. But, they won't build it because it does not make business sense.

Disney's current guest demographic, by and large, is not attracted by super intense attractions, as evidence by the popularity (or lack thereof) of the existing attractions at the upper end of the "thrill range" vs. things more squarely in their market. People who are more inclined to visit thrill-oriented parks might be attracted to WDW with a better lineup, but Disney would have to spend A LOT of marketing dollars changing the perception that they don't do thrills AND those marketing dollars will end up confusing their core message that they are a whole-family-oriented destination.

It would make much more sense to invest the money in an attraction more closely aligned with their core business---and we've seen that's true by the insane popularity of 7DMT, Radiator Racers, etc.

Personally, I love big roller coasters, and I would ride anything Disney built... I voted no in the poll but my answer is really more ambivalent, I don't have a particularly strong opinion. I have no doubt WDW could theme a big steel coaster to one of the parks if they wanted to, but I don't think they ever will, and that doesn't really bother me.
