Shooting at Va Tech

Sorry for going AWOL. Just received news my cousin is fine!! After the lockdown lifted he had gone to find out about the welfare of his other friends and got stuck there without a car. Why he could not call from someplace else is a mystery but we were just happy he is fine. He just called, my uncle was at his campus by then!! He is bringing him home despite his protests. We just want to hug him now. It was a scare though. Thanks for all ur prayers but even though my loved one is safe my heart goes out to people who must have got the other phone call!!!

Thank goodness

Mitushib, I'm relieved to hear that your cousin is okay. I'm sure that's a huge weight off of your mind.

Hooray! I'm so glad. You must all be so relieved!

But the cold facts are that she is much more likely to encounter a problem in her "daily routine" for instance, a routine car accident, than she is to become a victim of random violence, like that which ocurred today at VT. Same goes for a shark attack, mad cow disease, stranger abduction, or any of the other myraid of stastically insignificant things today's media hype scares us to death with.

I agree. That makes perfect sense, but fear isn't necessarily rational. She's seeing kids like herself, who were going about their routine on campus, and then someone opened fire on them. She told me that she wouldn't know what to do if something like that happened. I told her that most people wouldn't because it is not something you would ever think would happen. In a day or two, she will put it to the back of her mind, as will most people, but right now it is very scary for many people.

Again, my heart goes out to those involved. I can't imagine what it must be like for those who know the victims they are now showing in pictures on the news.

Wonderful news!

DD has several friends there. One of her friends was shot in the back of the head and another one in the chest. The one shot in the head, her parents live in our neighborhood. :sad1:

Your daughter and her friends are in my thoughts!

I'm just able to get to the computer to do this post, and I am finally allowing myself to cry from relief. I've been holding it in all day since I heard the news early this morning and have been following the news since then. My youngest niece lives in West A-J. She is fine and was not on the floor where the shooting occurred, although she is still pretty shook up.

My heart just goes out to everyone at Tech. My oldest niece also goes to school there. My brother graduated from there, as well as numerous co-workers and friends. I am in total disbelief over what has happened.

Prayers to everyone involved, and please know that we are thinking about you.

I just finished talking to DD who is at Florida State. She said that many of the students there have now heard about the VA Tech shootings. Needless to say, they are upset. They, like everyone else, want to think they are safe going about their daily routine. Something like this rocks that belief. I really didn't know what else to tell her other than we must live our lives to the fullest because, in the bigger picture, we aren't really in control. But, we can't let fear rule our lives or there is no point. I wish I could wrap my mind around the advice I'm spewing to her. At times like this, you want to wrap your kids in cotton and place them on shelf where nothing can get to them.

I agree with both of you but I understand where your daughter is coming from...

When I hear about school shootings as a parent you just want to go grab yourkids and bring them home. It is understandable that the students at other schools are shaken up.

While I kow my kids could be hurt at any time of the day, when you watch something so horrible unfold on the news you stop and think about your everyday life and your loved ones and shed a tear for those that it affects.:sad1:

I live just a few blocks from Georgetown University. Its very somber here in town - I think kids in colleges all around the country are probably in shock. :(

We're heartbroken here in this house. Such a senseless and and terrible tragedy. :(

WOW!! That new conferance was crazy! More questions left opened than answered.

It seems that the discription of person that did one shooting doesn't match the discription of the other shooting. They said the shooter was dead, but had a person of interest. So they aren't sure if the shootings are connected.

Some people got the notice of the first shooting, others didn't.

It's all very conflecting as to what is going on.

 I'm so glad you guys heard from him.

My DS (a sophomore at UDM) called me tonight "just to say hi".........it was so comforting to hear his voice and he's not affected by any of this, so I can only imagine how you felt hearing from your cousin.:goodvibes

I'm not a kid--- but as soon as I heard (in the car as I was exiting my campus) I just sat there and cried in my car.

We had terrible weather today, in fact most classes were cancelled because of wind, flood, etc. Police officers were near the campus but naive me thought it was because of downed wires, flooding and such.

I just can't imagine this.

They were interviewing the first suspect of interest while the second shooting happended.

That's not what I heard, in the press conference. I thought they said they were interview witnesses about the first shooting when the second one started. ?????
