Shocking and tasteless "joke" e-mail received

It's just a little joke, that's over a year old. I got a little chuckle out of it the first time I saw it. It's really not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.:confused3

When I click on it I get a new screen that has a clock run down to 00:00:00, and then it flashes.
Is that it? Is that what is so terrible or is it not working properly for me?

You are not the only one who did not get it. I did not get it either and I was starting to think that I was the only one who did not get it.

I do not get it either...:confused3 , please tell me?? I get the countdown and the flashing zero's and the writing but what :confused3

ETA: DH just explained it to me....and yes that is a lame sad joke.

And can I add, that we leave in MA where two planes left out of Logan and my DH was in the WTC on 9/11 and lost 70 co-workers.

I agree, it's in bad taste, but on the other hand...have you EVER been on a plane, train, anywhere for that matter, and played around on your laptop and had someone look over your shoulder to read what you are doing? It is *really* annoying and rude, IMO! In a situation like that, I have to admit, it would be funny to click on it and have the stranger that is looking at MY family photos get a little scare!

I consider that joke funny and showed it to several of my coworkers who also laughed, except for a couple of them who knew it already.
IMHO some people nowadays are trying to be so politically correct that they can't take a joke anymore - Just my .02 :confused3

It's reasonably funny in the context of payback for those annoying, nosy people who are trying to see what's on your computer screen, or who are being generally annoying. It would be crazy to actually do (much too risky!), but it's fun to think about!

I don't see anything shocking either. Then again, I've never been personally affected by a bomb, and those who have are understandably more sensitive about things like this.

I wasn't mad at my friend. I was quite surprised that she would forward something like this to me (Knowing that I lost friends on 9/11), and think that I would get a kick out of it.

grinningghost I appreciate you going to bat for me.

To the others who wonder why I posted it if it offended me so much. Because I was offended by it and wished to open up a dialogue about it. There is a line that can be crossed when it comes to jokes and I feel this one not only crossed it, it pole vaulted over it. You don't have to agree with me, you can even find the joke funny. However I chose not to bottle up my distaste for the joke.

You're welcome. I totally understand why you posted it. Discussion forums need topics to thrive - you opened up a good one.:thumbsup2

This shows how differently people view things - I lost a friend on 9/11 as well, and so did my DD, who was 7 at the time, but I didn't find the joke offensive or disrespectful at all. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have, just that different people view things differently.

I readily admit to being one of the ones that didn't understand why you would post it if you found it so offensive. Learning that at least part of your distaste for the joke is based on your losses from 9/11, I'm even more surprised. There are a number of people on this board that suffered losses that day, so if it was hurtful to you, it could well be hurtful to them as well.

Just my thoughts.

Well said. IMO it doesn't make sense to think that seeing this might upset people and then do the one thing that ensures more people get upset. :confused3

true...but I didn't say "hahaha...check this out...it's hysterical!" I warned people of my feelings in the OP. And if there are others who found it distasteful as I have, it would be helpful for me to share my frustration with them. And I don't see why you'd be surprised that I posted it based on my involvement with 9/11...of course I'd share my feelings with others...it's what people (at least I) do when we're hurt.

As I said before, I'm surprised that you would post something that hurt you (due to your involvement with 9/11) knowing that there are others here that lost loved ones on 9/11 that might be hurt by at as well. There was nothing in your OP that hinted at what it was about, or that your reaction was based on 9/11, so any other victims of that day could have opened it having no idea whatsoever, and been hurt just as much as you were when you first received it.

That's why I'm surprised.

I agree with both sides here - I think that it's in very poor taste, and anyone who really did anything like that would be in HUGE trouble...but yeah, wouldn't it be nice to do something to scare the bejebies out of the clod who can't keep his eyes off your computer/magazine/whatever...

Maybe something less overtly terrorist...

Is is wrong that I'm now trying to think of something that could offend the nosy without being threatening? :rotfl2:

gotcha...

So it's all resolved now...I'm going back to update the OP to warn of the actual content. Better now?

Oh for the love of...is there ANYHTHING I can say or do that won't result in you harping on me???

*deep breath* I DO understand what you meant about others who would have opened the website and got that same shock I did. Possibly it was why I was so offended to start with. The "sneak attack". I get this hahaha joke e-mail forwarded by a friend and WHAM...it's a joke about blowing up planes and trains. SO Yes, I suppose that my posting it here would have the same effect on others. So by warning them in the OP of the actual content I am hoping to circumvent upsetting others in that same sneak attack fashion. Now as for those who open it and finish the "joke" despite the warning, they can continue on with the discussion here about it being a tastless joke (or even a funny joke if that's what they think).

FWIW DH didn't think it was funny. He wasn't shocked or offended like me..he just thought it was a lame joke.
