~~~SEWING my way to POFQ ~ American Girl outfits & Custom Park Bags! ~~~
So, since I have been informed that my time here is limited, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures for y'all ;)
Here it is, in all its glory - my Singer 401A - Her name is Frannie, after the awesome lady who she used to belong to (I have some pretty cool stuff from Frannie Michelle - a string of pearls, this awesome machine, and some other cool costume jewelry. She was a very cool lady and I'm glad she considered my Mom & I family.
And, here is a shot of my buttonhole attachment:
D~ is going to kick me out for a few days so y'all can see what she's cooked up for me . . . I'll be over at my PTR, waiting for y'all to torture me with teasers of what I can expect in the mail popcorn::
Not that you will ever see this for a couple of days, but love your machine. I would only get an old one if it did zig zag. I have an idea, you can come up here and use my PE770 and give me your machine as a token of appreciation! :lmao:
OK - I just sent Marianne a text, she is officially BANNED from my PTR until she receives this in the mail. :rotfl2: So, if you see her lurking around... Get*her*outta*here! :surfweb:
So, we all know that Miss Marianne is leaving for WDW in a few weeks - and she wanted one of my Ultimate Disney Park Bags in the worst way - Figment style - And since Figment items are hard to find - D~ was on a mission to make her something fun!
So, D~ has been slaving away. Marianne has been such a good friend to me over these last several months, so besides the bag (she knows about), I also made her something fun to go with it - which she doesn't know about.
Also, and FYI... many of you have been great friends to me, during my time here on the Dis - so I reserve the right to Pixie Dust you, as well. :lovestruc
Anyways... Marianne's bag. :wizard:
Now, we musn't forget that Marianne has been banned from my PTR - so we must not let her feel like we've forgotten her... so you all must visit her PTR so she doesn't get lonely... Here's the link, in case you don't know Marianne - go say hi, and tell her how much you :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc her bag! Bwahahahaha...
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2692423
Marianne is going to be excited! I am going to see how much she is willing to pay me for a description of the bag! I booked our mt cabin and went $250 over budget so am looking for some extra cash LOL!
The bag is awesome. You really pick the best combinations of fabrics. Where do you shop? I think I just don't have an eye for what goes well together. Also, do you make your own pattern for the bag or use a pre-made one? It has been so long since I've done a zipper, but I'm dancing around it.
Thanks! :lovestruc I shop everywhere... LOL And that's no exaggeration. Honestly, I don't buy a lot at JoAnns (except my basics)... I get most of my fabrics online, and I love purchasing them on Etsy. The sellers are always so nice - and honestly - the shipping is cheaper than gas for me to get to my nearest JoAnn's.
I am working on drafting a pattern for this bag... It might take me a while though... I am pretty sure that it won't be ready until after Christmas. I just have too much on my plate right now to be able to devote much time to getting the pattern ready. I will announce it on my FB page when I get that far. :thumbsup2
ohh cute! Another gorgeous bag! :thumbsup2
Thanks!!! :lovestruc
The # is G6444985
I've done a little googling :goodvibes I think you're right, Model 66 made in 1918. It's missing the cover for the bobbin so I'm looking now to see if I can find a replacement. The belt is also a little too loose. I'm seriously thinking about trying to clean it, but I don't want to mess up the painting. I'll have to do some more research! Any help you can offer would be awesome! Your report really has me excited about cleaning the old girl up! I can just picture my grandmother sitting at this machine sewing when she was just a young bride :lovestruc
OK... I still love the machine... This is what I was able to dig up...
It's a Singer 66 (So it's the Red Eye, I thought) - it was allotted on September 17, 1918 in a batch of 50,000. It was manufactured in Elizabethport NJ.
Look here for the bobbin cover: www.shop.sew-classic.com She has her parts listed by machine, so it's the easiest to locate your part.
Because of the decals on this machine - you need to be very careful about what you use to clean it. Kerosene is the best for getting the old oil out. GoJo (non pumice - very important) to clean the outside... Here's a link for machine cleaning... Part 1: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-45816-1.htm Part 2: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-45983-1.htm Part 3: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-46696-1.htm
Here's another website that has a good cleaning tutorial: http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachineshop/cleaningmachines/cleaningmachines.html
And any other link you could possibly need to repair your treadle: http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachineshop/
I would be totally in awe (ahem, jealous) if you were able to use this machine... Seriously, how many people can say that they create something fabulous on their Grandmother's machine?
I always say that Patience knows what she is doing, and she is teaching me - and it's the truth... Think of all the experience these machines have... I know, these machines are not alive, but I just like to think that maybe they have some sort of spirit, that the people that sewed and created on them decades ago left some sort of imprint... I know, it's strange... but I just feel a connection when I am sewing on these old machines, something I didn't have with the Brothers, at all.
Okay I feel bad I bought the machine but I haggled the mothball smell got to me and since I need to use the case I am going to have to figure that out.
I will post pictures tomorrow but the machine was super clean and worth a bit more than I paid. It was in the girl's grandmothers attic. It shines sparkles, the needle moves up and down. The wiring is fabulous and the light works.
I am so happy to have this little beauty. DH wants to know if I am going to sew on her.
Oh and I have all sorts of feet to go with her and the original owners manual.
I need to figure out how to get her to sit right in the case.
I am so excited for you Chiara... You will end up sewing on her, I'll bet. You'll sit down at her and realize that you have something awesome. And isn't it great that you get the WHOLE machine and accessories, and everything for less than you'd pay for just a foot on a new machine. :thumbsup2 I love it!!!
Ok - the mothball smell... I am going to go research that for you, just as soon as I catch up on all these PTRs.
I love the new Figment bag! He is one of my favorite characters! You hardly ever see anything with him on it! I love the appliques and the fabrics that you picked. Another fabulous job!
I love seeing all the pictures of the old sewing machines. They are so great! You are making me want to go and take my mom's machine this weekend. I am not sure she will let me have it yet though.
Chiara- Your new machine sounds awesome! I will look at your PTR tomorrow to see pictures!
Go get that machine out of your mom's. Does she still use it? Tell her you want to restore it and use it - I'll bet she'll let you have it. :lovestruc
Do you sell your American Girl outfits? If so, how much do you sell them for?
Welcome!!! I hope you'll stick around and continue to read my PTR. :lovestruc
D~
Totally in love with your Figment bag! :love::love::love: :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc That's adorable and I'm very much jealous of Marianne! :lmao::rotfl2:
Thanks Liddy! :thumbsup2
Ok, I know I said Donald was my favorite. But I might have to take it back. Or, perhaps it's a tie! This Figment bag is fantastic! Marianne is one lucky lady! I can't wait until you put together that pattern!!!!
D - those old pics of women sewing were awesome! I'm totally with you on thinking about what a machine might have made years ago!
Regards,
C.
Thanks! :thumbsup2 Figment did turn out pretty cute. :lovestruc
And thanks for relating to me about these machines... I am so glad that I am not the only one who feels a connection to them. Now, you need to get one. :rotfl2:
I plan to work on the items for my testers today - hopefully they won't take me too long to make... but knowing me, I'll just keep adding on so I can outdo myself. :rotfl2:
LOVE IT. The bag looks amazing and the little zippered wallet is so cute, love the applique you did on it. Thanks for banning Marianne so we don't have to wait! Marianne is probably stalking the mail carrier.
Question - how do you get your quiliting looking so perfect? Any tricks or it is just your good sewing skills.
I hope you don't mind if I post a couple of pictures of the machine I learned to sew on....
th_P1000580.jpg
What a pretty machine. Amazing that it is so old and not only looks beautiful but can still sew a straight line.
I have to say...having seen one of D's masterpieces first hand I can tell you without a doubt that she stitches perfectly...regardless of the machine she is on!
She goes on and on about how straight Patience stitches...but from what I see it is talent that is causing those stitches to be so perfect, not the machine.
Now, before you try to deny it, I know that newer machines do not truly stitch straight...it is almost an optical illusion, and the older machines made their stitch a bit differently, which is why they are straighter. However, that is not noticeable to most people. Your stitches are perfect. Not only are the stitches straight...but they are also straight on the fabric!
If I could stitch half as straight as you I would be happy! (and yes, I know that makes you probably a bit obsessive...but I don't care!)
Nope, I just need to get busy and clean up the one I have (Beth)! That would mean I have to stop actual sewing projects, though, some of which are Christmas presents. Poor Beth is waiting "Patient"ly. ;)
Yeah, that is what I figured :headache: I was hoping she would have some amazing trick or that it really was because of her wonderful machine but I had a feeling it was the person driving the bus!
I don't feel so bad about my wiggly stitches if you are dreaming that your stitches were that straight too.
From my son :dance3:
Love the figment bag!
Getting jealous seeing all of there old machines!
Makes me want one.
I was promised my grandmothers....but somehow it went to her sister in law. Then to her niece. :sad2:
Maybe someday I will get it back!
Need to get the kids ready for bed!
What a pretty machine. Amazing that it is so old and not only looks beautiful but can still sew a straight line.
Ummm... not sure how I get my quilting so perfect... I think it's far from perfect. Honestly, it's Patience... I just steer the fabric - she actually sews it. :confused3
In all seriousness... I have no idea. I line my ruler up, and make lines every inch on the diagonal with my disappearing marker, and then I quick sew over those lines before they disappear. :rotfl2: If they disappear before I get there, I just pretend they are still there and go for it... because I am too lazy to go back and redraw them. :rotfl2:
Thank you... I hope that someday you get your grandmothers machine. You sould ask to "borrow" it, and just forget to give it back. I would. :surfweb: Or, better yet, borrow it, and switch it out with the exact same machine that isn't your Grandmother's... They'd never know. Like they'd use it like you would...
D~ is feeling a bit devious tonight. :rolleyes1
This is GREAT! Just the info I needed. I have all the websites bookmarked! It doesn't look too bad. The only thing that worries me is the tension part. I'm a little worried about the spring. The bobbin winder looks a little complicated too! I am motivated now though! Thank you so much!
Yay, I am glad I could help you out. The tension isn't as bad as you'd think it is. I know it's hugely scarey, but honestly, you think it's more complicated than it actually is. As long as you have the manual right in front of you, and you read it through 20 times, and follow the instructions perfectly - you will be fine. I changed out Mr. Rocket's tension with out even looking at the instructions, and I've only done this once before. So, it's much easier than you think it is.
OH - and VERY IMPORTANT... take pictures of every single piece before you take it off, so you can remember exactly how to get it back on.
:thumbsup2 Just pinned everything for future reference.
Yay!!! Good girl~ :thumbsup2
THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!!
This concludes your daily threadjacking. Please remain seated until the threadjacking has come to a complete halt. Thank you and have a great trip.
I commented in your PTR already... but I am so proud of you! You did an excellent job as a first timer - you are destined for fantabulous sewing skills!
My parts came today for Mr. Rocket. So, he now has a spiffy new bobbin winder tire. DH also rewired his power cord/foot pedal... He is officially set up to take over for the Brother... I took all the Brother's bobbins and wound them on to Mr. Rocket's. The brother is now packed away under the counter - he is my emergency back up machine... the same machine I dug out of the closet one year ago...
D~ <--- Did anyone notice... I seem to get blamed for a lot around here.
I forgot to tell you all that I finished my first test item tonight... I will post pictures in the morning. :)
D~
Wow this is such a great idea!! So wait... just to get things straight.. these are all american girl doll dresses? And who do you sell them to?
Thanks for the kind words! It's no where near the fabulous items you can create ... but I'm very proud of what I did accomplish! It'll take time and practice before I can make amazing things like you!
I can now follow along with some of your lingo too! I know what a bobbin is!!! Mom showed me how to wind one, but I couldn't do it on my own yet.
And I'm glad it has a name ... because mom was calling the foot pedal the "uddin uddin" (pronounced like pudding without the P and G). :lmao: (Because it makes a noise and makes it "go". Get it? Yeah.... I know, horrible.)
Glad to hear you are ready for Mr. Rocket to take over! :goodvibes
And perhaps if you'd behave, you wouldn't catch all the blame. :lmao::rotfl2:
I forgot to tell you all that I finished my first test item tonight... I will post pictures in the morning. :)
Can't wait!!! popcorn::
i really want to comment... But some time last night, our internet went down... I am currently thumbing it on my phone.
Disneyfreak508 welcome! I am so excited you're here... I read your entire frumpin TR a couple of months ago, it was very well written and i really enjoyed it. I didn't comment because it was already moved to the completed section. Anyways... I make the outfits, i sell them to whoever wants to buy them. When i sell all of them, i go to wdw. :) although, now i've thrown park bags into the mix too... Fun, fun. I hope you'll continue to follow along on my ptr.
Everyone else.... I called tech support this morning, after dh checked all our connections in the house and determined it's the phone company and not us. They won't be able to look at the prob until tomorrow, so no pictures until the internet is fixed, sorry. Although i have been able to get it to work intermittantly, so if by chance i can get on later and get them to upload, i will.
So bummed, D~ can't live without internet. :(
