~~~SEWING my way to POFQ ~ American Girl outfits & Custom Park Bags! ~~~
After reading about your love for those vintage machines makes me want to find one like patience. Dh is handy and now I am wondering if he would be interested in taking one apart:rolleyes1 I might have to go shopping at the Thrift store.
I just found out yesterday, due to Target's new idiotic "opening at midnight on black friday" - I am the fortunate recipient of an 8 hour shift on Thanksgiving Day! Yes, Target is not open on Thanksgiving - so the general public is led to believe that all the employees get to spend the day with their families... Oh no, it has now become a mandatory day of work and a mandatory 8 hour shift! :headache: Target's distribution centers are sending out trucks to be accepted by the stores on TGD... So, all employees have to go in and stock shelves... Totally idiotic! This is something - that if the company thought ahead - they could have sent the trucks a day earlier and we could stock shelves on Wednesday... Oh no, not Target.
Sorry, I should not be complaining... As I know many people work on holidays. I am just still really upset about it, because no one was made aware of this until yesterday. I wouldn't be nearly as mad, but black friday is also a mandatory day of work... I would feel much better if it was one or the other.
So, my Thanksgiving schedule is as follows... Get up at Midnight on TGD... Work from 2am until 10am... Come home... Try to sleep... Guests come at 2pm... Then try to enjoy my day... (Maybe get another half nights sleep) Get up at 10pm and work from 12am until 6am. Oh, and did I mention... BIL and SIL are coming from The Netherlands to celebrate her very first Thanksgiving in America - at our house! Also, Josh's dad and step-mom are flying in from LA.
I am very angry at Target right now... because I am sure there are 300k other employees in the exact same situation that I am in. Bad, bad Target~!
D~
:headache: I'd be upset too if they just sprung it on you. My mom is a nurse so I know all about working the holidays but she always new a year in advance what holiday was hers. That is just not right and I can't really see why all these stores are opening at midnight.:confused:
I though I posted it on your PTR -- who knows where I posted. One of the opticians at work gave me her Singer. It's approx 20 years old. She has been married 23 years and thinks she got it when she was married for one or two years. It has no manual and no accessories (like feet). It does a zig zag and straight stitch. It looks very modern compared to your new find! I just hope it's sturdier than my machine. And it's staying in the box until the laundry room gets cleaned -- I'm working on it.
I must have missed it because I didn't know. Congrats on your new machine.
Just ask Michelle - I did NOT restrain myself at Joann's on Saturday. She was AWESOME enough to share coupons with me and I found what I went looking for PLUS some other great finds! I'll post in my PTR in a bit - DH washed them all for me today :)
. .
:lmao: Marianne was my enabler about buying fabric. I now have to get another tote to fit the fabric I ended up getting on Saturday.:lmao:
Okay D~ all your talk of winter coats had me on the look out for Miss C we found a great coat and JC Penney for DD and it was only $50 better than the 100 we were looking at.
We are going on year 3 with the little guys coat. I hate buying coats LOL.
I washed fabric today.
I love your machines. I am hoping when I redo my space in January I can display my machine that is buried right now.
Please let me know if you get one... I hope to convert everyone in the world... hopefully to own at least one vintage machine and love it. :lovestruc
It's just insane, that's all. :confused3
She's really good at enabling. :thumbsup2 You better buy two totes, just in case. LOL
I wish we could still shop in the kid's section, because their coats are so much better. DH even went into the kids section to grab a coat for dd - and it was too small. There is definately a difference between kids coats and adult size coats in the quality and warmth.
I am glad you were able to find a coat for little C - and yay for being able to stretch litte J's coat another year. :thumbsup2
I can't wait to see pics of your new space in Jan - I just love looking at sewing room pics. :lovestruc
Finishing up projects today and starting more. I wish I had pictures to show you all... I might just have to kick Marianne out of my PTR for a few days. :rolleyes1
I vote for kicking Marianne out for a few days!!:lmao::rotfl2: I want to see your latest project!
So because of your fabulous vintage machines I have been stalking craigslist. Just would love to find something local.
Well I found a pretty reasonable working 15-91 and the best thing is it is maybe 2 miles away.
I emailed the lady for better pictures because the ones on Craigslist were all blurry.
So she emailed me the serial number and a better picture.
I told her I was interested so we shall see so now the waiting begins.
I am actually going to start the organizing before January but I am thinking of building a counter/table then.
I would buy your house in RI - but Amber would put a serious hurtin' on you. She found out today that her absolute FAVORITE teacher at the kids' school is leaving THIS THURSDAY and is a wreck. She has made it quite clear I am NEVER allowed to move away from Charlotte. . .
Add to that the fact that I had a lovely re-occurance of my lovely childhood allergy this weekend (I'm allergic to a mold that grows on oak trees or something like that) where I lose my voice for about a week (hasn't happened since I moved to Charlotte and I'd forgotten about it until I woke up Saturday and realized I was in big trouble) and I don't know that I can live full time in RI anymore . . .
It would make a lovely vacation home :) If it sells I can take dd to Dis this spring -- if it does not sell we are not going anywhere :sad1:
Yay! More room for fabric... I know you need it. Do you have that machine set up yet... I'm about ready to go google image it, so I can at least see what it looks like. :rotfl2:
Good job resisting... although, you now have that extra cupboard for fabric. :thumbsup2
Well, there are several awesome models your mom should watch for... All Singers...
66
99
15-91 (Patience) - really, honestly, the best machine ever.
301 (i love the look of this machine... The black one reminds me of a gangster tommy gun from the 40's movies)
401a... One of the best machines that Singer ever made
503a... Another one of the best
There are several others - but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
As long as she can turn the hand wheel, and there's a bobbin case in the machines that need one - then it can be saved. If the bobbin case is missing - you can expect to pay big bucks for a replacement - usually much more than what you'd buy the whole machine for. Just a friendly FYI. :)
I hope you are able to find the perfect mountain cabin for TG - that just sounds so romantic and wonderful...
Very quick b/c lunches aren't even started and I'm supposed to be dressed by now as well....
That new shelf in the cupboard already has fabric on it! I had so much laying around or crammed in that the space was made for items I already have.
If you have a free moment would you mind letting me know which of those machines has a zig zag stitch -- that is a must for me. I really want to sew knits on a good machine.
And we found the perfect cabin, it's just not at the perfect price. I also have to go buy a new frig for the garage today. Our freezer is dead and the frig side works when it wants to. There was one at the Exchange for $375 and I finally got a coupon in the mail (scratch off -- usually 5% off) so I can go buy it now. The crappy thing is delivery is $75! Just buying the cheapest frig I can find since it's for the garage and I don't need tons of freezer space anymore since our new inside frig has huge amounts of storage.
I vote for kicking Marianne out for a few days!!:lmao::rotfl2: I want to see your latest project!
Lynn
I second that :lmao::lmao::lmao:
ROFL! OK - I will let her know. Then I should be able to post pictures this afternoon. :banana:
Chiara - THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HAD ALL DAY!!!!!
When are you going to go look at it?
When you look at it... Check the handwheel - if it moves freely - then you are good. If it doesn't - then it will be a lot of work, and possibly won't work at all - so I'd probably skip it.
Also, make sure it has the bobbin case... those are pretty spendy to buy if it doesn't come with one.
Check the cords... Not only the cords from/to the foot pedal, but there are teeny-tiny short cords that go from the plug on the side of the machine to the motor on the back, you have to kind of crane your head down there to see them - but if they are cracked they'll need to be replaced. Also check the cords to the light - if those are cracked - they'll need to be replaced, as well. 99.9% of the time, all of the wires need to be replaced. I was lucky, because dh does electrical work all the time, so he knew exactly what to do, and rewired Patience entirely for me (and I think he enjoyed it). The biggest expense, if your DH can't rewire it, will be to find an electrician (don't go to the sewing machine shop - they'll charge you too much) to rewire it.
If you have any questions and want my #, I'd be happy to PM it to you. :lovestruc
Here's some good info on that particular model: http://blog.sew-classic.com/2008/10/05/singer-1591-sewing-machine-review.aspx
The 401 and 503 have the capability of a ZZ with the extra cams. As far as I know, the rest of the machines are straight stitch only. Here's the review for the 400 series... http://blog.sew-classic.com/2008/10/25/singer-401-401a-403--403a--404--sewing-machine-review.aspx
Ouch on the new fridge... You can have ours... Since we took the garage down - we have no need for the garage fridge... :lovestruc
D~ not only are you the American Girl expert but your wealth of knowledge about vintage machines is amazing. Our sewing rooms thank you but our pocket books are crying :rotfl2:
This is the Listing
I am going to make sure everything is clean and turning
Thankfully my brother and dad can rewire for me :)
I am going at 8:30 tonight. I am going to be a kid in the candy store all day.
It looks great in the pictures. I hope it works out well for you. Seems like a fantastic price!
Since you're sharing bargain coat stories- I will share mine. Several years ago we went into Ross to look for some spring clothes. I found a girl's Columbia jacket on the clearance rack for $4.99! It was two sizes too big but I bought it anyhow. We had to wait a year but my DD was able to wear it for two winters. Then she handed it up to her older sister (I know that sounds wrong but my older daughter is tiny and gets hand me ups) who wore it for another year! Then I sold it at a yard sale for $12!
Wow that is fabulous.
Chiara...
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks to be in pretty good condition. :thumbsup2 It looks like it might be a few years older than Patience, again, it's hard to tell, but the face plate of this one looks to be a bit more ornate (which would be super cool!).
If you post the serial # she sent you, I can dig up a bit more information, if you'd like. :lovestruc
That is a wonderful deal!!! And awesome that you sold it for more than you paid - after years of wear. :worship:
D~ <--- who is still working on this project. I am going to have to dig out my old machine that I packed away, to get the LGMH appliqued on - I almost forgot about that little guy. :eek: Or figure out how to wind a bobbin for Mr. Rocket with out a bobbin winder for that class of bobbin. I was hoping my new tags would get here, as well, but I don't think they will make it - might have to improvise...
I am sort of doing this as well, but with quilts! I only have one done so far. Well, I had a couple, but they ended up being birthday presents. lol Anyway, I'm making one right now that's not for sale, but hoping to start one shortly after that I can list for sale. I have an Etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/listing/78151766/moda-wildflower-serenade-rag-quilt?ref=pr_shop). I apologize if I'm not allowed to post that. I'm not sure how to do pics yet. lol Anyway, I hope all goes well for you! We don't have a set Disney date. It's probably way far off. We would like to take the kids (4) before the girls are out of high school (both are sophomores right now). We'll see how it goes. lol
D this is the serial number.
singer AM486280,
Here are the 2 pictures she sent of the serial number and id plate I guess. Need to read up on the machine.
Yes, I do this for Marianne all the time... I label the boxes as "car parts" - her dh doesn't suspect a thing. :thumbsup2
Actually - you KNOW I'm your good luck charm every day -right? :thumbsup2
I know, I did consider that... but the car parts box I am sending you is already full. :laughing:
Well, if your parents have any left overs, they can send them our way - I swear my girls go through a bottle of shampoo and conditioner per week - it's insane!
I updated your PTR for you a few times while you were gone. Can't wait to see what you got! :thumbsup2
I hope you get your voice back soon. I didn't realize it was an allergy - I thought you had gotten sick.
I'll never forget the year I lost my voice while Josh was in Iraq... and he called home and I couldn't talk to him - and the girls were being rowdy - so he couldn't hear me. I remember getting off the phone and just bawling like a baby... I couldn't tell him what I needed to tell him, he couldn't hear me and I didn't know when I'd get to talk to him again. Sorry, every time someone loses their voice, I always think of that.
D~
We really do have a great system worked out, don't we? And yes, I believe you ARE my good luck charm when it comes to all this sewing stuff :lovestruc
I don't think you'd want the leftovers (not that they still have any) - they'd be 15-20 years old by now!
Because of my lovely lack of voice, I had to call out of work this morning:headache: It's really hard to even THINK of teaching a group of 13 preschoolers how to play soccer without one's voice - it's like herding cats when I have my big loud "teacher voice" :rolleyes1
But - since I'm home, I am posting this and then sending an email for Finn's preschool class and then I'm going to sew sew sew.
:lmao: Marianne was my enabler about buying fabric. I now have to get another tote to fit the fabric I ended up getting on Saturday.:lmao:
Sorry about the need for a new tote!
Must not forget the LGMH!!!
I'm not liking all the talk of kicking me out for a few days :sad2: What will I do without y'all to keep me sewing???
Oh! And Target and Thanksgiving! I think it's INSANE! It was the first thing I thought of when Kohls & Target announced that they'll be opening at midnight this year! I love me some Black Friday shopping, but the holiday and family need to come first!!!! NOT stocking shelves and keeping people away from their loved ones on Thanksgiving!!!!
OK - got some information for you...
This particular model is a Singer 99. Not a 15-91 like it is listed in the CL ad.
There were 30,000 of this model alotted on April 27th, 1956 (so this machine is actully newer than Patience by 4-5 years) - Manufactured in Elizabethport, NJ.
We really do have a great system worked out, don't we? And yes, I believe you ARE my good luck charm when it comes to all this sewing stuff :lovestruc
Can I get this in writing? :surfweb:
ROFL - I'd never tell them that. :rotfl2:
Had to take a break... I had to rip part of it apart - D~ is not a happy girl right now. :rolleyes1
Thanks D
I think I am going to go and look at it anyway after reading the sew-classic blog.
It might be a great machine for DD to learn on since she has been bringing it up lately.
I think you should go look at it... The 99 is a great machine - really.
D~
So, since I have been informed that my time here is limited, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures for y'all ;)
Here it is, in all its glory - my Singer 401A - Her name is Frannie, after the awesome lady who she used to belong to (I have some pretty cool stuff from Frannie Michelle - a string of pearls, this awesome machine, and some other cool costume jewelry. She was a very cool lady and I'm glad she considered my Mom & I family.
And, here is a shot of my buttonhole attachment:
D~ is going to kick me out for a few days so y'all can see what she's cooked up for me . . . I'll be over at my PTR, waiting for y'all to torture me with teasers of what I can expect in the mail popcorn::
OK - I just sent Marianne a text, she is officially BANNED from my PTR until she receives this in the mail. :rotfl2: So, if you see her lurking around... Get*her*outta*here! :surfweb:
So, we all know that Miss Marianne is leaving for WDW in a few weeks - and she wanted one of my Ultimate Disney Park Bags in the worst way - Figment style - And since Figment items are hard to find - D~ was on a mission to make her something fun!
So, D~ has been slaving away. Marianne has been such a good friend to me over these last several months, so besides the bag (she knows about), I also made her something fun to go with it - which she doesn't know about.
Also, and FYI... many of you have been great friends to me, during my time here on the Dis - so I reserve the right to Pixie Dust you, as well. :lovestruc
Anyways... Marianne's bag. :wizard:
Now, we musn't forget that Marianne has been banned from my PTR - so we must not let her feel like we've forgotten her... so you all must visit her PTR so she doesn't get lonely... Here's the link, in case you don't know Marianne - go say hi, and tell her how much you :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc her bag! Bwahahahaha...
