I don't sew. I just use my machine for mending. What does it mean when the thread gets all bunched up under the material and jams the machine. I can't sew more than a half inch with it without having this happen. Is there a way to fix it?

This happens to me a lot. Usually it is a very easy fix. Take out both bobbins of thread (top & bottom), make sure to remove any thread pieces left that may have broken, and carefully replace both bobbins, thread your needle, and try again. This fixes it most of the time for me. I also turn off the machine and turn it back on to reset. Good luck!

Thank you. I didn't know if it was a tension problem.

It's possibly several things

bottom bobbin in backwards
tension set incorrectly
dust in the bobbin case or under the plate
needle in backwards or has a rough edge.
