Sewing Machine on a budget -Advice

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to check out the Brothers and look on Craigs List. I'll need to see if there is someone local who could work on a machine.

I started out on a $150ish Brother electronic machine that served me well for several years of pretty heavy use. When it started having problems I upgraded, but it turned out that the fix was easy/cheap enough that I did that as well so I could pass the machine down to my 10yo who is learning to sew.

I am teaching myself to sew (27 years old) and it is very simple to use. It seems to be a machine I can easily learn on but one that will also grow with me as I learn more sewing skills and desire to do more detailed work.

I also would suggest this one or one similar. Costco had it for a while and walmart carries one similar. I sew for a living and have 2 very expensive machines and this one, they sew no different.

www.joanns.com sells sewing machines and they regularly have coupons for 40% or 50% off of an online purchase. You might be able to get a good deal there.

Generally sewing machines are excluded from Joann's coupons.
OP, I suggest you stay away from the Brothers. They're cheap for a reason. I've learned my lesson about buying them.

I have this one, too. I got it for Christmas and have really enjoyed it.

I agree with checking Craigslist. I got an older White sewing machine for $20 and after a little tlc at the shop it's as good as new. All metal, runs like a dream, a real work horse machine. I've heard that the newer models with plastic parts break down more often and require more $$ in upkeep. Just something to consider.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. I have this machine and it suits my needs perfectly (for now) Its modern enough that shes able to get the basics of a computerized machine (should she upgrade later as she becomes more serious) but is still simple and cost effective enough for her to begin with and you to afford.
