*********Just a big fat vent******

Am I the only obese person that can't do these simple exercises? I am beyond fustrated. Jumping jacks, jump rope, any floor exercises, if I get down there I ain't coming back up. :headache:

I bought the new biggest loser exercise for the wii and it feels like a waste. I have over 100 pounds to lose and have not exercised for years ( obviously) and now I feel I can't even get though a simple warm up.

What in the world is everyone else doing that is seriously overweight? I feel like I will put my back out on this thing.

Sorry to be a so negative but there's got to be something else out there that might be better suited for the obese.

I've started the South Beach Diet and that's a whole other can of worms in itself...LOL

Walking.... and more walking....and walking again. Seriously.... start with WALKING. Get yourself a GOOD pair of walking shoes and get moving. If it is too icky outside to walk where you live and you don't have access to a treadmill, try the Walk Away The Pounds DVDs. They are really good.

I understand your frustration at not being able to do the exercises in the videos (although I think you could keep trying and work your way up to it). But you can WALK! No excuses, right??

Once you have some basic walking down, then start trying to increase speed/mileage. And then add hills.

Put those videos aside for the next 10-20 pounds and then try them again.

Good luck.......................P

I just wanted to send you a

I am overweight, although technically I just left "obese", I have always been active and I find it difficult to get up and down off the floor for exercise. I am 45 and my body just doesn't want to do it anymore.

I agree with the above post. WALK WALK WALK, then walk some more!

Also, do the video as much as you can. Just move for the full time doing as much or little as possible. Dave on my Biggest Loser thread said he is doing PX90. He turns it on everyday, does what he can...He is definitely seeing an improvement. That is an accomplishment!

Also  for you for beginning!!!! That is so great!

I am doing Atkins and I know it is not easy. Determination is the key!!!

Join us on the Biggest Loser thread. It is a positive group with lots of words of wisdom, support and NO judging. We have all been there!

We accept anyone, anytime!!!

Oh and one more time...

No get out there and go get em!!!!:cheer2:

Nancy

Thank you ! I will get the walking video as it's still to cold here to get out and walk. We will see what happens. Thank for the hugs and the good advice.

I agree with just start walking. Bundle up and walk outside; as long as you are in layers and appropriately covered (hat gloves etc) you will be fine. the fresh air will feel good! And you don't have to walk for hours out there; just get out and start walking! When I'm tired and I don't feel like working out, I force myself to at least just walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes and I always feel better about it than doing nothing at all. Challenge yourself to walk x number of days this week, then maybe up it a little each week; up the number of days or the length of time you walk etc. Take it in small steps though to not get injured or burnt out. Good luck; starting a workout routine is never easy:hug:

 I know exactly how you feel. I really want a exercise video with fat people so I can see what it REALLY should look like when I am doing exercises! Pointing to some skinny chick's six pack and telling me that is what it should look like when I do a curl is NOT helpful! All I can see are rolls of fat jiggling!

I am not familiar with the Wii options but I got the 30 Day Shred DVD. I can only do one set of each of the exercises and then I skip to the next part. I also pause when I have to get off the floor. Someone suggested I do wall pushups and that is much easier, as is sitting on a chair and doing crunches.

But what really is the best right now is that I joined Planet Fitness ($10 a month!) so I can use the exercise bike and the weight machines. I think those are really a lot better for us plus sized gals, not getting on and off the floor and work at your own pace.

Start at where you can handle. You don't have to do it all just because the program you are following says you should. But as you do that you will get stronger and have more endurance so look at trying to make small increases each week (Do 11 instead of 10, walk for 1 more minute). You may find simpler exercises more helpful instead of something more structured. Check out sparkpeople.com. They have great exercises on there for every ability level and have complete instructions and video to see how you are supposed to do things.

And do come join us on the Biggest Loser challenge-- it has been wonderful to have the support and accountability.

ETA: Many malls have a walking route marked out and even special time before they open for people to come in and walk-- great during bad weather.

I agree. Walk, walk, walk. Think of it as functional exercise as that is what you will be doing at Disney. I'm looking at it as training for a "race".

There is a walking game for Wii that people are very happy with. If you like to dance, people say the Zumba game is fun.

Not sure if you have the $ to spend on a treadmill, but I just bought a NordickTrack treadmill with ifit live. You can use google maps and put in any walk you would like to do and it will simulate it. I'm working up to walking all over Disney by using the training programs that send you a new program everyday for 8 weeks.

Well low and behold there is a gentleman in my bonus room setting up a treadmill, God I hope I don't kill myself. :yay:

I recently got an excercise bike... not as good as a treadmill however I know I have very little time to do this and the bike being one with the full normal seat I can watch my online grad school lectures and take notes while on the bike. Not as good as "real" excercise but at least it is something.

For the treadmill it shouldn't be too bad just start off slow and not with a huge hill or anything. If you can manage to walk to get somewhere you shouldn't hurt yourself on a teadmill unless your pushing too hard.

Wait a minute here. I am not even overweight and cannot get through the simple exercises, seriously.

Hell I had to scale back WALKING because I am so out of shape.:headache: Yes I injured myself walking on the treadmill. It was my achilles tendon.:sad2:

So what did I do? I went out and bought a book called "Stretching" by Bob Anderson.

My muscles are so weak and tight that I have got to do a lot of stretching before walking or anything.

Please do not make my mistake and make sure you STRETCH those tendons. Good Luck!:thumbsup2

Don't get down on yourself! You are doing something so that is the most important. The walking videos are really good. You can take a different one out of the library every week so you don't get bored. Just do what you can and each time try a little more. The Richard Simmons videos are fun too. You dance and it doesn't seem like drudgery. Good luck!:goodvibes

This is good advice, I for sure need to look into this book. Thanks to everyone for the help and kind words.:grouphug:

I have to second the suggestion of the Walk Away the Pounds DVDs by Leslie Sansone. It is all in-home walking in front of your TV - you will love it and can adjust the intentisty to your level. She has many different dvd's out there - if you on demand on your cable, check the exercise section to see if any are one there.

Also check out Walk It out for Wii. All you do is walk but the more you walk the more coins you earn the more things you unlock (flowers, trees, cars, houses, etc) the point is to decorate the island. Good luck and lots of hugs! I also have to say I'm a huge fan of WW (I've lost 12 lbs in 5 weeks) so if South Beach is not a good match for you, check out WW

Also, set small goals. I am doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shread, yes, it is intense for a beginner (even on level 1). However, in the workout, she has 2 minute cardio segemnts. Like, a minute of jumping jacks, followed by a minute of jumping rope. I want SO BADLY to be able to keep up, but I can't. So I started setting small goals. For myself, it was "aim for 30 seconds of jumping jacks/jumping rope/butt kicks whatever..."

So I reccommend that to you. Seriously. Set small goals. Maybe tell yourself "Okay, I will aim for 10 jumping jacks." Do those 10 annd give yourself a minute or two of rest and then try another set of 10 or aim for 5 and then rest and repeat. Aim for doing 2 or 3 small sets.

If you try to make yourself a powerhouse out the gate you will fail, build your secuss from small sets. I found a wonderful quote that has become my mantra. Overall, I want to lose 50 lbs, but have a smaller goal of "35 by 35" (35 lbs by my 35 birthday in June). Anyway, this quote reminds me to keep at it, let exercise and healthy eating become my lifestyle, and that I don't need to immediately wisk away the punds.

"It does not matter how slow you go so long as you do not stop."

Just keep at it. Aim for something new each day or each week.

Judy, first of all a huge  for support!

I absolutely understand how you feel. I have a lot of weight to lose too. While I know I have a long road ahead of me, all I need to do is look at my two very active boys & I get the inspiration to keep going.

I started using the Biggest Loser for the Wii 4 weeks ago but I use the old version (having not realized there was a newer one since I bought the darn thing 1 year ago & never even cracked the box open until January!). I definitely started at the beginner level & thought the same thing as you when they said to do jumping jacks--you can't be serious! But you know what--I did a couple the first time, then switched to the standing jacks since I didn't want to overdo it, even then I just stood there to catch my breath while the game kept going along. This week when I did the jumping jacks during the session I actually did about 25 of them. I really do love the Biggest Loser for the Wii--I think it's an awesome program that I can do in the privacy of my own home. The last thing I'm going to do is go to a gym & get stared at!

You've gotten some great advice from the others--the most important thing is to get a start doing something & build from there. I'm on the South Beach board with you so we've got a whole different support group over there to keep us motivated. We can do it! :grouphug:

Do what you can, modify when you need to and most importantly keep doing it.

When I bought myself Jillian's 30 Day Shred for Christmas(with gift card I received) I couldn't do 30 seconds of jumping jacks at 300 lbs but by the 2nd week I could easily do 30 seconds of them at a time. She is right she has 400 lbs people that can do them but they gotta start somewhere and build. I could and can with my weight in 290s and I believe ANYONE can build up to doing them. Stamina and endurance comes in time. Push ups is another I could barely push out 1 let alone squeeze in a 2nd but in a couple weeks I could do like 10 without stopping. Now that is on my knees. If you can't do knees do them on the wall to start building up muscles.

I find Walk Away the Pounds to be very friendly for big gals its easier on joints and much easier to work up to a good length workout.

I too, have 100 pounds to loose. A few things I have done in the past are pause the DVD and rest for a couple minutes, then start it back up. That is the beauty of a DVD, PAUSE :)

A couple of DVD's that I have and use, and have found not too difficult, but effective are Island Girl Dance Fitness Workout for Beginners, Cardio Hula and Tahitian Cardio. I got them on Amazon for about $12 each! I live in CA so nice weather is easy for me to come by :) but if you are snowed in or something these DVD's will get you through the non-walkable days.

Good luck and hang in there!
