I just purchased from the Disneystore.com 2 sericel's. One with the Little Mermade and the other with Walt Disney and MickeyMouse "Sundays with Walt". I really do not know much about these and their value. When do you think they will be worth any money?

Can anyone tell me about these and their value? I really love these pictures and of course would love to purchase more (but my husband will kill me). I received notice from DC about the sericel from Austraila and I would love to purchase that one also (but I am saving for WDW in January).

No collectable goes up in value until they are completely sold out. Alot of the sericels Disney has made are still available. I would guess maybe 1/2 of all of the different sericels they have ever made are completely sold out. A few of them are going for double or slightly more their original retail value. Most have only gone up slightly. The size of the edition, the character(s) depicted, the scene, whether it is framed or not, and of course the condition of the cel will all affect its secondary market value.

If you are looking for an investment, sericels are not the best choice. Production cels, the one's used to actually make an animated movie, TV show or commercial, are the most sought after by collectors. ALL of the factors I listed above as well as the pose the character is in, what type of cel (movie, TV, commercial, publicity, or other), will greatly affect it's value. For example: a full figure of Ariel, the Little Mermaid, with her eyes wide open facing forward will get a lot more than a similar pose of say Basil from Great Mouse Detective.

The most important thing is to buy what you like because you enjoy it.

I couldn't agree more with Dom. You can find sericels on Ebay being sold for 50% retail. You got to watch for fakes however!!

An even production material does not necessarily increase in value. Animation art collecting has cycles just like everything else. Although, as more animation features increase their use of CGI, more recent production material will probably go up just because it is getting scarcer.

You can never go wrong buying what you love.

If it does go up in value, that is just icing on the cake!!!

Looks like both are animation cels. I looked at my "Sundays with Walt" and it looks like I have to send that one back to the Disneystore.com due to the frame is not joining right.

I assume that purchasing from the Disneystore.com I will get originals. Right? I don't think these would be fakes.

How do I know if I purchased a fake?

If you are purchasing one from the company, it should not be a fake. It should come with a certificate of authenticity. Sometime they have a special seal in the corner. I don't think they are always number (ie 165/1000), but the edition size would be listed on teh certificate, and on the seal, if there is one. I know the cel I got at last year's mini-convention has the foil seal, but I don't think my Disney Store 10th anniversary one has it. Send the damaged one back, or see if they will pay for you to have it fixed, that way you could get a better frame.

Thanks doombuggy I have called disneystore.com and they are sending me another one and then I will send this other one back. My DH was trying to convince me that even though the frame was damaged it was valued more due to there was a defect. I disagreed with him and I adv'ed him that if there was a defect in the cel then the cel would be valued more. I won.
