Can someone explain septic infections to me. I know it is when it gets in your blood, but does anyone know how it is treated and the outcome thanks
Tara

My DD had a septic infection when she was almost 3 weeks old.

She had Group B Strep. I believe they referred to it as bacteremia.

I guess you have sepsis when it enters your blood. She was treated with antibiotics.

I hope everything is okay.

Yep my dh is recovering from one. Can't fully explain it but it does get into your blood. Sometimes, apparently the infection can settle in one place. In his case the knee causing a septic knee. They cultured the bacteria in his knee and then used the specific antibiotic for the bacteria, in his case a Microbrial Resistant Staph Aureus. This particular form of bacteria is very difficult to treat and only responds to a very limited number of antibiotics. He was in the hospital for a week. Is no home with a shunt in place on home iv therapy for 3 weeks followed by a longer time of oral antibiotics. If untreated it can cause heart damage and other problems.
My dh is a healthy middle aged guy but this knocked him on his butt. He was delirious and had flu-like symptoms when hospitalized and it took at least 2 days till you saw any response to the meds. Very scary. Once they started working he got better quickly. He was home on Fr. and working on Monday. But he needs to be cautious and may need further work on his knee. He has another consult with the orthopedist on Fri. to see.

She needed antibiotics by IV and was hospitalized for quite a while to make sure they worked but she was very young.

How strange to see this thread here tonight....my dad was hospitilized for this yesterday. He had to have surgery last night to drain his knee out (where the infection set in) and will be in the hospital until at least Thursday on IV antibiotics. :( Scary...my mom (who is a nurse) thinks that perhaps a sinus infection he had a few weeks ago never quite cleared up and somehow it got into his bloodstream??? She isn't exactly sure and will talk to the doctor more about it...

Mine too, although he has a host of other issues. He is being treated with IV antibiotics but he has a weakened immune system. Hope your dad is feeling better soon

Tigeroo hope your dh is feeling better soon

Alice, my dh was fortunate they he didn't need the surgery to flush out the infection but they did tap his knee to remove fluid. One of the most painful things he's ever been thru he says. They start asking you all kinds of questions like are you an iv drug user, do you have any deep puncture wounds, etc. I am wondering if he caught it in the hospital as he was there two days before. But he had also had a bit of a cold. I'm wondering if they're related.
