the rebel xt has a sensor cleaning function but the book says it should be done by canon...is the on camera function something you should do routinely ie once a wk or once a month or should you not do it at all?
Thanks

An advanced person may perform a sensor cleaning/dusting(there is a differance) as part as a maintanance routine, but most of us only attempt it when we start seeing obvious dust in our images.

Test yours for dust.
Put you camera in AV mode and set Aperture to around F20, put the lens on manual focus and shoot a picture of the bright sunny sky or light colored wall.

I did a sensor cleaning a few weeks ago and all went well. I didn't get all the little dust bunny's but got the ones that were the biggest pain the a$$.

How often you do it really depends on how often you use the camera and change lenses. That is up to you to decide. Some people will do it weekly, others montly others less often. Some will send it out to be done (can take a while), others do it themselves. If you do it yourself, the actual sensor cleaning takes approx 5 seconds. Its the prep work that takes a bit longer (depending on which method you use).

This is the place I found that has the best explaination, tutorial and product prices.
He basically tells you right from the start that its not for everyone especially if you don't have steady hands among other things. Read the whole thing before deciding what you want to do and also do a seach to find other places and see what they say.
