Selfie sticks

They're not banned and I am so happy!
I feel like as long as you use them responsibly and respectfully, there should be no problem.
I personally am bringing 2 selfie sticks, one for my phone, one for my GoPro. And I will be cautious with it. I wont be swinging it in anyone's personal space or hitting anyone with it. Using it basically on my own time when not many people are around.
And if people don't like it, well, sorry but that's their problem

I certainly agree that there could be times when a CM or someone isn't around to take a pic of your family but most nicer cameras have a timer that can be set on the shutter. A Gorilla tripod is a very handy little gizmo and easily packable and able to be set up anywhere for a remote shot of a group.

I don't think this is realistic. The ship is busy and there are lots of people walking by. IMO, it would be way more annoying to have someone setting up a tripod with their camera on a timer (running back into the shot, preventing people from walking through), than using a selfie stick.

I don't think most people carry cameras any more. I know I have a DSLR which I never use. Cameras in phones have gotten so good. I don't want to lug a big camera around anymore. And even if I did setting up a gorilla or tripod is going to interfere on others peoples space just as much or more than a selfie stick. I personally don't see the big deal if you're not acting like a jerk when using your selfie stick. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable handing my $600 phone to someone even if they look nice or whatever. I'm sure I'm not alone. So then your in the position of not being able to get a picture together. I think that selfie sticks are just another thing people on this board are over dramatic about but in the real world normal people aren't bothered by them.

In the "real world" I'm bothered by them. Yes, I've almost walked into them when they suddenly appeared in my path, and once was hit on the side of the face. Followed by the "aren't you going to apologize?" face of the owner(as if it was my fault she hit me).

Yes, if everyone were responsible for their actions regarding them, there'd be no problems. But, sadly, not everyone acts in a responsible manner using them.

I agree that selfie sticks (AKA "selfish") sticks should be banned. They are a nuisance, people pay no attention to the people around them. If you want a picture of your group, here's a novel idea: ASK SOMEONE NEARBY TO TAKE ONE!!!! I was delighted when I heard they were banned at WDW and heartbroken when I saw them all over the Dream. A cruise ship is a small place - even more reason to BAN them.

Selfie sticks are the worst. There might be plenty of people who use them responsibly, but there's also tons of people who use them in an annoying or dangerous fashion.

I'd much rather use the Disney photographers (no shortage of them at any of the parks or the ships) or ask someone to take the photo for us.

And when I absolutely need to take a selfie, I use a tool that's with me all the time, and is not as dangerous or clumsy as a selfie stick. It's called my arm.

Not everyone is selfish with them but some are. You can always ask someone to take your picture.

And of course, there is nothing selfish about interrupting the vacation experience of a stranger to get them to document your vacation for you. Please, DO use your selfie sticks and leave your fellow passengers alone to enjoy themselves. They have other things on their mind.

I think it's just a matter of time before they are banned on the ships. I almost got hit with one on the Magic in December. Selfie sticks are fun but on a cruise ship when you are sometimes shoulder to shoulder with other people (like sail away or pirate night) they are just annoying and potentially unsafe.

The last couple cruises we were on, the selfie sticks were sometimes obnoxious. People at the front of crowds for Sail Away or Pirates with the iPads on the selfie stick to record the show, blocking the view of people behind them. People with normal cameras couldn't get decent shots because the ipads/phones were blocking part of the character/scenery.

BTW, I have no problem with people asking me to take their picture. I even volunteer if I see groups of people trying to get shots. It's polite and someday you might need someone to take one for you.

I thought I added this to my post too... I totally agree with you, we had someone in front of us at the Winter Wonderland celebration in the Magic lobby using the selfie stick to record the show and it was beyond annoying. The person was sitting on the floor while holding her selfie stick up in the air which totally blocked the view for a few people behind her that were standing up. I was sitting down so it wasn't blocking my view, but I could not get a decent picture without her "stick"

I'm pretty sure people aren't required to take your picture if you ask - you could simply say "I'm sorry but I need to get to _____ and don't have time", etc. If someone asks me to do it I say sure if they will take our picture too.

Another here that does not like selfish sticks especially if used on the veranda rooms due to it being close to other verandas. I consider it an invasion of privacy if it sticks out over the veranda. I have been asked many times to take a picture with someone's camera not only in the parks but on CC....I don't mind doing it.

Easy. I don't use my phone as my camera for anything other than a quick shot. IT BOUGHT A PHONE TO BE A PHONE.

I have an old camera I use for stuff at school that I usually take on trips because it's easy to use if I need to ask someone to take a picture of me (though most of the time I *gasp* use my arm). (I have a different camera I use for everything else.) I download the pics from the cards every night so if someone decides they want a beat-up old camera, it's not a huge loss.

You're probably a pretty rare anomaly. Most people prefer the convenience of being able to take a crisp, clear digital photograph and to then be able to instantly upload that photo to social media or other photo storage and sharing sites. If it grinds your corn to carry around two devices and to have to deal with usb cords or memory cards then you be you.

Personally, I have a phone to make phone calls, and a camera to take photos. While on a cruise, I don't carry my phone around. But I do carry my camera.

Seriously, yes I selfishly wanted about 5 photos with all 5 members of my family. That was a ridiculous comment, it is not just 15 year old girls using them and not everyone is being Careless and walking aimlessly with them.

I'm with you. Us getting one had nothing to do with selfishness and I've not once used it to photograph myself alone. We use it to get photos of all 7 of us together, because otherwise, I won't be in the photo.
If we were in a crowded area, I would refrain from the stick and just ask someone to take our photo, but if we're where there is plenty of space, I'll proudly bring out the "selfie" stick that I'll re-term "family wand" and get a photo of all my people. Hopefully, few people will judge me as self-absorbed for doing so.
