Have not flown since 1999 and booked on a Jetblue flight for next weekend. I do not want to look silly and hold up the line! What is the procedure for going through security? I've read that laptops needs to come out of bags and shoes need to be off? Anything else I should know about? I will have a camera gear bag with tripod attached on side, is it okay to just leave that intact?

The other main rule is called 3-1-1. This is for "liquids" and means that you can carry items that are 100ml (3.4 oz) or less in 1 qt size ziploc bag, one per passenger. This applies to gels and aerosols, too.

You will also need a government issue ID (license, passport). You will need to show your ID and boarding pass in the security line before you proceed to luggage check.

All liquids/gels need to be under 3.4oz, and put into that little ziploc quart baggie. Leave that easily accessible in your carry on bag. That comes out when you get to security. Your laptop goes into it's own bin, with nothing else. Shoes come off, belts come off. If you are wearing a jacket, coat, sweatshirt, sweater, that has to come off as well. Be sure there is nothing in your pockets. I put all valuables at the very bottom of my carry on bag....makes it very difficult for anyone to quickly stick their hand in and grab something.
Please, when you get to the end of the conveyor belt, do not stand there and put your shoes, belt and jacket back on!! Get your things and move aside. There are benches you can sit on to put yourself back together!

As a PP mentioned, put all your valuables, cash, wallet, phone, etc in one of the carry on bags and just zip it shut and then get it out later. I see people throw these things in a bin and they are asking for it to get stolen.

Also, coats/sweaters off, kids under 18 do not need any type of ID. Prescriptions do not need to be in original bottles although I would keep liquids in their bottle.

Appreciate the tips. Getting my bag packed now. I will leave a spot for my purse inside the carryon and sweater.

if your carryon has a zipper pocket on the outside, I would use that as my purse and leave the purse packed inside. one less thing to worry about.

How early is early enough? Would two hours be plenty of time? Or would more time be recommended? Our flight leaves Orlando at 7:30am.

I would get to the airport no later than 5:30am. That's assuming Orlando. Other airports vary. I've gotten from my car to the gate at my home airport in 15-20 minutes. Sometimes sooner. I still get there an hour ahead.

I am with you. No matter what airport we try to be at the airport over 2 hours before a flight. We had times where we breezed thru security with lots of time to kill (last month in Las Vegas) to time to grab a bite in Wendy's, a bottle of water & reading material in the gift shop before our boarding call 15 minutes after we got to the gate.(Orlando 2010) .After that experience (DME got us there under 2 hours before the flight, we & our bags had been checked in that morning at POFQ, so we just headed straight to TSA) we try to get picked up by DME 3 hours plus before the flight.
We usually have an early morning flight when we start a vacation. So we usually eat breakfast at the airport so we like the extra time.

Just googled Orlando airport restaurants and found Mcdonalds and Krispy Kreme. Are those accessible after your through security? That would be great to eat while we wait and easy to get my hubby moving if he knows there is food on the other side of the line!

Krispy Kreme is pre security. There is a mcDonalds pre and post but it's not necessarily in the airside section you will in. There are food options post security for all airlines though.

One HUGE time saving trick I learned from a TSA agt is if your Laptop is the ONLY item in its case you do not need to take it out of the case....it still must go in its own bin. But I learned that in order to save time, I pack my laptop's power cords in my carry on bag... Usually in the front pocket of my rolling suitcase! I have NEVER had a problem doing this and boy what a time saver!! I'm not walking away from that conveyor belt until my laptop is safely in its case. I cannot afford to drop it!! Just thought I'd share....

You may have a problem with the tripod going through security. Some places say it could be used as a weapon. If you can put it in your suitcase it would be better.

FYI I flew out of Orlando last month. I had extra speed from Jetblue. The extra speed line was just as long as the regular line. It took me almost an hour to get through security at 6 am. They were doing this dopey thing half way through the security line. There was a TSA person with a touch screen that had an arrow on it. You touch the screen and the arrow said which way you were to go in the line. There was hardly anyone in the line to the right but the screen was telling everyone to go to the left.
